    3. I'm in need to someone who has an older computer, older browser software and perhaps a slower modem line to check out a site for me. One of my surnames is from Tyrell Co NC and a revamped site has been put up. I really like it but I need to be sure that if I were to do something like this for the Marion Co site that I would not be making any of the site's information inaccessible to some of our visitors. I have always strived to make sure the site is accessible to everyone and don't want to change that. 3. Viva, the Mountain Echo newspaper, published in Marion Co AR weekly from April 1886 to 2000, is available on microfilm thru about 1992 or 1993. Obituaries weren't published until fairly recently in the familiar "Obituaries" columns of today's newspapers. Usually they were sort of tucked in here and there - if there was an obituary at all. Copies of these microfilm can be searched at the Arkansas History Commission. You can write to them at Arkansas History Commission One Capitol Mall Little Rock AR 72201 or check ordering information at their email site http://www.state.ar.us/ahc/ahc.html. To the best of my knowledge, there are no burial records for any cemetery nor at the oldest funeral home in Marion Co AR as far back as 1930 or 1940. None of the cemeteries in the county are officially attached to any sort of cemetery association, church, or civil entity. "Cemeteries of Marion Co" by Marian Burnes is the best source available for this type of information - but it doesn't include much on native rock headstones because any writing that may have originally been on them becomes too weathered too quickly to be readable. It's possible that Burns Funeral Home, 725 Panther Ave, Yellville AR 72687, might have some information, but I seriously doubt any of their records go back that far. It's also possible that the City of Yellville, City Hall, Yellville AR 72687, might have information, but, again, I doubt it. Sorry I can't be more specific. This is a problem run into by us researchers on a regular basis. We just do the best we can. 1. Virus
    2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. Don I'm sorry to hear that your system was hit with a virsus. Here's the lastest one - information from Rootsweb: ****************** 1a. Be Careful Out There. The Bugbear is no teddy bear. It is an e-mail worm containing backdoor components that can allow an infected system to be remotely compromised; it also includes the ability to kill antivirus and firewall software, leaving infected systems wide open to further attacks and lulling you into a false sense of security thinking your system is virus-free. Genealogists have much more interesting things to do than deal with an Internet worm with a Trojan horse, but such is life online. Bugbear, which hit Great Britain and Australia users first on Monday, September 30, according to news reports, is also known as Tanatos. It arrives via e-mail with no distinct characteristics except that the attached file is always 50,688 bytes long. The subject line and text are stolen from existing e-mail it finds on an infected machine. Many RootsWeb users are expressing concerns about this latest varmint because unless you pay extra-careful attention you might think an e-mail with the attached Bugbear worm is coming from a trusted genealogy friend, family member, or from your favorite Mailing List. RootsWeb's Mailing Lists do not allow any attachments, but that doesn't mean you won't receive something that will fool you into thinking the message is from a RootsWeb Mailing List. This is one clever worm. There are confirmed reports of Bugbear even forging some prepends commonly used on many of our Mailing Lists. If you receive e-mail with an attachment that appears to be from say [SURNAME-L] and you are not subscribed to that Mailing List, that is a good indication that it is a message with the Bugbear worm attached. Even if you are subscribed to a certain list and there is an attachment, do not open it. Many of us are still fighting off the Klez worm, which steals and forges our e-mail addresses and subject lines, and now along comes Bugbear and the Opaserv worms. The latter is a network worm that was discovered September 30 also. Are you at risk? You certainly are if you are a Windows user, and especially if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or 5.5 browsers and have not applied the patch found in MS01-020. [Note: Copy and paste carefully; this is a 2-line URL:] http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ MS01-020.asp?frame=true According to CNET News.com, a flaw in MIME (the multipurpose Internet mail extensions) lets a malicious program attached to an e-mail message execute (start) when the text of the message appears in Outlook or Outlook Express (popular e-mail applications). The software problem was patched by Microsoft almost 18 months ago, but it is obvious that many genealogists have not updated their computers. Don't know what version of Microsoft Internet Explorer you have? Launch the browser, click on the Help menu and select About Internet Explorer to find out. To prevent infection, Windows users be sure your system is current: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm and everyone should update their antivirus software and refrain from opening any attachment unless the sender confirms that he or she sent it to you. The major antivirus (AV) software companies have updated their files to include protection from Bugbear -- but you need to be sure your AV is up-to-date. Moreover, don't rely exclusively on your AV to protect you from every virus or worm that comes along. If you use Outlook or Outlook Express for your e-mail application, be sure to set your VIEW options to show attachments. In Outlook Express make sure that the Preview Pane option is off. In Outlook, under VIEW, turn off the Auto Review and the Preview Pane. Some e-mail clients treat Mailing List digests as separate attachments, but those will always have the Mailing List digest request address as the FROM address and they will have the digest volume and number in the subject line. However, be wary, if attachment is exactly 50,688 bytes, it probably is the Bugbear. 3. I had a computer expert work about 5 hours yesterday on 3 of my computers which had picked up the latest virus. It comes from visiting a URL on the web, not from e-mail. Since I am on a wireless router with my computers, it spread itself to all computers including the lap top. I had a 2000 version of Norton Anti Virus software and it did not catch the virus although it had the latest updates. I had bought the 2002 version but had not installed it. The virus was able to overcome the old Norton software and every time you tried to bring it up it would just disappear. One computer had 11 different locations where the virus had attack, the second computer had 7 affected areas and the lap top had 4 sections that was affected. The 2002 version was able to sort out all this but it took a long time and in one case on the second scan found additional virus locations. This is a very sophisticated virus, not much you can do except keep current virus software. Don

    3. Hello Marion County, I read this on my WICKERSHAM List from Gay Davis and thought it should be passed along to all of you. This is one of the most used Genealogy Libraries in the U. S. and many of us plan trips to research there. This library is closing, temporarily for renovation. Please read the following if you are planning a trip there, soon, or in the near future. Rhio Gillis ======================================== Closing Date Announcement Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana - - ------------------------------------ The Historical Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library will close for relocation on Saturday, December 14, 2002 at 6pm. The department will remain closed through the month of January 2003. This is to allow time to move all our materials to our interim location. The current building will be going through renovation and expansion. - ----------------------------- Will materials be available? - ----------------------------- All our research materials will be available up until Saturday, December 14 at 6pm. At that time the department will be closed so we can move all our materials to our interim location. When the library opens at that location, we will have all our books, microforms and periodicals ready for research. - ---------------------------- Why will we be closed? - --------------------------- Closing the department will allow us to move the whole collection at once instead of doing it piecemeal. This will ensure that the materials you are coming to Fort Wayne to use for your research will be available when you arrive, offering the full collection for our researchers. If we moved pockets of materials, what you needed for your research might not be available. By moving the whole collection at once it will ensure that the materials you are interested in will be available until we close on December 14th, and when we reopen in late January 2003. - -------------------------------------- Where will the interim location be? - -------------------------------------- The interim location of the Allen County Public Library will be at 200 East Berry St., Fort Wayne, Indiana. Locally, it is called Renaissance Square. It is 5 blocks to the east from the current library. There will be limited free parking available; there is also a pay parking garage across the street and more than 150 metered spaces in close proximity. - -------------------------------------- What will the interim location be like? - ------------------------------------- One of the most exciting things about our interim location is that the genealogy collection will be a browsing collection. All the materials will be out and available for the researcher to retrieve them. Materials will not have to be paged; the shelves will be open. - -------------------------- How long will we be in the interim location? -------------------------- The projected time frame is 2-3 years. ------------------------- How can I find out more information? ------------------------- Visiting the library web site http://www.acpl.lib.in.us or phoning the department at 260-421-1225 is the best way to get current relocation information. This is a very exciting time for all of us, librarians and researchers alike. Our goal is to keep our patrons informed and continue to offer the highest level of customer service possible now, in our interim location, and in our newly renovated library. For further contact, please phone the department or email Curt Witcher, Manager, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at [email protected] or Susan Kaufman Tavenner, Librarian, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at [email protected]

    1. Re: Tax Records
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. You may have this information already, Reta, but felt including it might make the explanation easier to understand.. "Marion County Tax Records 1841-1866" by Desmond Walls Allen, Arkansas Research Inc., PO Box 303, Conway AR 72032. William DeShields paid one (1) poll tax in Marion Co AR in 1841, 1843, 1844, 1845, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1851, and 1852. William DeShields paid real estate tax on 160 acres in section 22 township 20 north range 18 west in 1852. William DeShields paid non-resident owner real estate tax on 120 acres in section 22 township 20 north range 18 west in 1853. This information was taken directly from microfilm in the possession of the Arkansas History Commission, One Capitol Mall, Little Rock AR 72201. Photocopies may be obtained directly from AHC, but I gather the request must be very explicit. You can find out more about requesting copies, costs, necessary information, etc from their web site - or you can contact them by snail mail. http://glorecords.blm.gov. William Deshields paid for 40 acres of land (under the Cash-Entry Act of 1812) in the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 22 township 20 north range 18 west 15 November 1854. As I understand all this, any male between 20 and 60 paid a poll tax to the county in which he resided at the time the tax was paid. Any male 20 to 60 living outside that county but owning land in that county was not obligated to pay the poll tax, but was obliged to pay the real estate etc. tax in that county. Apparently any male 20 to 60 could apply for a certain piece of land, but would have to "prove it up;" ie, clear, improve, etc that piece of land within the time specified for the type of land grant for which he'd applied. Looks to me as if William DeShields may have applied for two pieces of land in section 22 township 20 north range 18 west - one for 80 acres and one for 40 acres. But, looks as if he "proved up" only the 40-acre piece by 15 November 1854. [An improvement on a piece of land is usually at least a "permanent-type" dwelling, usually habitable by humans; ie, not a barn or shed.] Oh, and a poll tax is whatever tax is due on whatever is taxable in the county of residence in that year. Personal Property is one of this type of tax. Don't recall what others might have been involved. They varied from county to county. [It definitely was *not* what we know of today as a poll tax - the tax on the right to vote.] The BLM/Government Land Office site might have an explanation of the various types of land grants. The courthouse in Marion Co (wooden then) burned two or three times during the Civil War (1861-1865) so the county has none of those records. The courthouse burned again (again wooden) in Aug 1887 so the county has none of those records either. Looks as if your best bet for copies would be AHC. The land William DeShields apparently applied for, owned, and/or paid tax on is located in Sugar Loaf Township a bit south and west of Monarch in Marion Co. From the looks of DeLorme's maps I'd say it was on Sugar Loaf Creek or one of its tributaries. The maps on the Marion Co web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion might be helpful here. Be sure to scroll down far enough to get to the ca 1916 orange and yellow map. It's a big help in locating section/township/range land descriptions. It's also been broken down into smaller segments (by township names as of 1916) which are easier to read. "SWNW" translates to "the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter" if that helps any. Good luck. 1. Crooked Creek Church Minutes
    2. Hi lists, I am sending this to all 3 lists (Boone/Marion/Carroll) as this is a church which was in the Crooked Creek/Sugar Loaf area which was affected so much by the boundary changes. Crooked Creek Church originated in 1834 and was started from a church which has no records (that we know of) called the Sundry Baptist. This is a transcription of the actual Minutes of the church from 1834 to 1847. The Church is still in existence today and known as Union Baptist but these are all the pages we plan to transcribe at this time. There is 47 pages and we have indexed and separated pages so you can print only what you want. I have checked the Carroll County Tax Lists and many of these people are in Carroll County. I know my family was in Marion and then Boone. So I am sure this affects these counties too. The Church Records/Crooked Creek Page loads slow as we have divided the pages. I think it is worth the wait. Anyway, it is on our FREE website and hope this helps you verify where your family was at a certain time. Also be sure and check out the Boone County Burial Association area as many Boone/Carroll/Marion County people are in this list. Those looking for Abraham Wood, he held Crooked Creek Church meetings in his home. I am working on the Carroll County Burial Association and this includes memberships from many funeral homes as it was owned by the Nelson family. It will go up soon I hope. Keep checking. It will always be free. Reta

The farmer who owns the land around it had let his cattle run in the cemetery and they pushed over and broke most of the stones. Several years ago I tried to get an organization started to set up perpetual care for the grounds. Mrs Jearldene (Hurst) McNeil was the person who stepped up and headed up the group who worked on the cemetery, got the fence back up, and cleaned up a lot of the brush and trees. Unfortunately she moved away a couple of years ago and I don't think there was a group organized to do work this year. Her sister Cora (Hurst) Tetrick I believe is the person in control of the funds raised for the cemetery. Although you have to go through several gates to get to the cemetery, you can still have access, and the road is good enough for a car. I probably can help you with information on the Hall's buried there. Don Ott At 05:31 AM 21-09-02 -0500, you wrote: >Good Morning. I don't have any information on this cemetery.
