Hi Reta! Talk about your coincidences. The message below popped up in the Izard County mailing list this morning. It gives a good deal of information about LtCol Schnabel including the fact that he surrendered his battalion at Jacksonport on 11 May 1865. -- Robert W. Jim and Wanda ---------------------------- BIOGRAPHY of JOHN ADAMS SCHNABEL John A. Schnabel was born in Virginia, 11, June 1817 and d. 11, March 1901, Arkansas, of German descent. A brilliant German architect and engineer, he designed and constructed many of the water grist mills in North Arkansas, as well as the J acksonport Courthouse (where ironically the Arkansas troops of the Civil War would surrender.) Civil War - Confederate Enlisted at Yellville, Arkansas, age forty-six yrs., blue eyes, light hair, dark complexion, height six feet and one inch. Was a Lieutenant Colonel. J.A. Schnabel, Co., T S, Schnabel's Battalion Missouri Cavalry. Third Regt. Inf. 7th. Div. Mo., State Guards, J.A. Schnabel, Commanding. Confederate - Schnabel's Battalion Cav. Lt. Col., Schnabel's Battalion. Name appears as a signature to a Parole of Prisoners of War belonging to the Army of the Northern Sub.-District of Arkansas, and surrendered on the 11th day of May, 1865, by Brig. Gen'l M. Jeff. Thompson commanding said Army, to Major Gen'l G.M. Dodge, commanding the Department of the Missouri. Lt. Col. Schnabel's Batt'n, Calvary. Appears on a Muster and Descriptive Roll of prisoners of war belonging to the Army of the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas, and surrendered on the 11th day of May, 1865, by Brigadier General M. Jeff Thompson, C.S.A., commanding said Army, to General G.M. Dodge, U.S.A., commanding Department of the Missouri. Paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas, June 5, 1865 Col. Schnabel built the Spring Mill Dam in 1869. The Batesville Guard, pub. at Batesville, Arkansas, May 15, 1956, p. 2, Vol. IXXX, No. 99. See clipping #6,1279. Near Cushman, Arkansas, Independence County, a spring was dammed, forming a pool large enough to be called a small lake. It was called Spring Mill Dam. The water provides power for Spring Mill. A later frame addition almost hides the original mill structure, made of hand- hewed logs fastened with wooden square nails. Almost all of the equipment stands just as it was fashioned, the wheel, out of sight under the floor, the shafts and gears that transmit the power, and the wooden crane used to lift the heavy stone burrs out for sharpening. About the time the mill was built, considerable wheat was grown in this part. Harvesting was done with scythes, and rack-like attachments called "cradles" caught the wheat as it was mowed. The old cedar worm-drive and casting used in bolting the crushed wheat still hang across the rafters. J .A. Schnabel, builder of Salado Bridge. Gazette-Sun. Mag., June 16,1957. Article by Anthony Leone on Salado Bridge, gives sketch of Schnabel. Schnabel represented Jackson Co., in legislature twice. Clipping of Leone article -file under Salado Bridge. Near Batesville, Arkansas, the Salado Creek Bridge was an im-pressive example of stone masonry. The graceful double arch bridge was in use from 1870 to 1939. - J.A. Schnabel and his wife Sarah E. Schnabel, b. 4, July 1836, d. 10, March 1901, dau. of John I. F. and Elizabeth Chinn, are buried in the Chinn Cemetery, Independence County, Arkansas, Ashley Twp. between Batesville and Newport, Arkansas. I think maybe J .A. Schnabel is a brother of our Thomas Jefferson Shrable but no definite proof. ---------------------------------- End of document. Hi Reta! Concerning when this battalion was formed and when it was surrendered, here is what my principal reference on Confederate units has to say: From 'Compendium of the Confederate Armies - Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, The Confederate Units and the Indian Units' by Stewart Sifakis: Schnable's Missouri Cavalry Battalion Organization: Organized with six companies in the summer of 1864. Probably surrendered at Yellville, Arkansas in May or June 1865. First Commander: John A. Schnable (Lieutenant Colonel) Assignment: Jackman's Brigade, Shelby's Division, Army of Missouri, Trans-Mississippi Department (August-December 1864) Battle: Price's Missouri Raid (August-October 1864) So it appears that Schnable's Battalion was formed late in the war during the period when every man and horse available was being scraped together for Price's Raid. The first order of business after organizing the battalion was to ride to Pocahontas, Arkansas because that is where General Price collected his troops and started north from. Given the rather short interval between their enlistment, and the beginning of the Raid in September, I imagine that the troopers in the battalion were rather sketchily trained in their duties, were most probably riding their own horses and did not have uniforms. The weapons of choice would have been revolvers (If available - they were in short supply and the ones manufactured in Texas during the war were of indifferent quality. Since the Mississippi River was in Federal hands by this time, no weapons or supplies of any kind were available from east of the Mississippi.) and perhaps sabers. However, it was becoming clear by this stage of the war that while sabers looked fierce, they weren't of much use in a typical skirmish. Given the overall supply situation in Arkansas by this time, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Schnable's Battalion may have been armed mostly with muzzle-loading shotguns brought from home. Comparable cavalry units in the Federal army were typically armed with repeating carbines by this stage of the war. Can you confirm whether my great-great-great-grandfather, Jesse William Meachum, born 1824 in Virginia and resident of Dubuque (extinct community now under Bull Shoals Lake near Lead Hill), was a member of the Rangers Company of Schnable's Missouri Cavalry Battalion? Any additional details concerning his service would also be useful to me. I've been told that he was in that outfit but have never had access to a roster or other information that could confirm it. I would also be interested in whether or not a William Meachum, born 2 Apr 1818 in Virginia, and resident of Independence County may have served with Col. Schnable. I have theorized that he may be a brother or cousin of Jesse William, but have never had any indication as to the truth of that speculation. -- Robert W. Haven't been able to find much on the Cantrell School, Jim, but will ask around. I do know it was operative in 1924 and that it was located on one of the Wickersham farms. It's my guess it was named for one of the many Cantrells in Marion Co, but have no idea which one. Will get back to you when I find out more. The Izard site has been doing a lot on Youngs. Reta
Identifying the Betty Young that married Thomas Croucher Hudson could be a very difficult process, Patsy. I'm unable to do this, but maybe someone on this list can. Here's some information that might help narrow your search. First off, Arkansas did not become a state until 1836. In 1833 it was still Arkansas Territory. Second, Marion Co AR did not exist before 1836 so this marriage could not have occurred in this jurisdiction. It was probably in this geographic area, but there won't be any records because we didn't exist as a county. Third, the Marion Co AR courthouse was burned 3 or 4 times during the Civil War and burned completely to the ground Aug 1887 so any records that *might* have once existed here are gone - totally gone. Fourth, the parent county for Marion Co AR is Izard Co AR. If any records of the ca 1833 Hudson-Young marriage exist, they would most likely be in Izard Co. You might have some luck at the Izard Co web page. And be sure to check the writings of A. C. Jeffrey - they're really early. Fifth, Izard Co AR Territory was created from Independence Co AR Territory 27 Oct 1825. In turn, Independence Co AR Territory was created from Lawrence Co AR Territory which was created from Lawrence Co MO Territory 1819. AR Territorial papers might contain information about Betty Young and her family. Sorry I can't provide what your researching but hope some of this helps. Memoirs of Otie Jane Hughey 1897-1990 from oral interview Jan 1986 by Dolores Raines Sutton I was born Feb 7 1897 in Boone co Ark on the Newt Milum place near Lead Hill. My Daddy,Lank, delivered mail on horseback from Lowry to Omaha from 1902 to 1939.. he started the route riding a blind mule then bought "old Barlow' a brown horse that he rode for 30 years. In 1909 he filed on the old homestead on Bear Creek. They stayed there until my folks seperated in 1924.but didnt file for divorce until almost 20 yrs later in 1841. There is a stoy behind this.My mother and the kids still at home moved in with my Brother,Alvie, and when my Dad sent the Divorce papers Alvie tore the up and Mama never knew she was divorced. He married again in 1944 to Martha Joy Pate but divorced her 1 yr later .all of us kids thought they were just living together until the marraige and divorce records were found in 1979 at the Harrison court house. Linda I can get in. Helena
Linda: I guess I also got the revamped site for the Patriot Net. This is what happened when I put in the web address. I got a can't open page and it told me to click on Patriot Net (that was in red letters) which I did and the web page came up. My computer is relative old and I don't have DSL yet. I hope this is some help to you. Colleen
