    3. Hello! Thought I'd take a second to introduce myself to y'all since I've just signed onto the list. My name's Darren Hellwege. I live in Columbia MO now but grew up in Oklahoma, just outside Oklahoma City. I'm married with two kids (Kristian's 12, Janie Beth's 10) and I'm a radio announcer and programmer at the University of Missouri. I'm a big sports fan, from European and North and South American Soccer to Cardinals baseball and Rams football to my daughter's youth basketball team. I've also become very interested in recent years in family history. I have a couple of branches of my tree that run through Marion Co through my grandparents, Binum Dixon Roberts and Mildred (Ott) Roberts. Both were born in that area, Papa near Bellefonte and Mema around Yellville. Still a lot of Otts in the area, and we're kin to Morris and Keeters and Hudspeths and Sharps in those hills. The family lines in which I'm interested in digging up more info include: Roberts, Ott, Stanley, Patterson, Rea, James, maybe others. The furthest back our line can be traced through the Roberts side is to a Newberry James Sr., who went from Kentucky to Tippah Co. Mississippi. His son Newberry Jr. came to Marion Co. AR following the War Between the States, and his daughter Elizabeth married a Roberts. Their son was Loren Lee Roberts, who was Binum's dad. I'd love to hear from anyone there who knows any of my family! Mom and Dad still live in Oklahoma and are doing well, my brother's a Physician's Associate and my sister grooms dogs, and they're both around Edmond/OKC, too. We lost Binum a couple years back in January, but he'd lived a long good life and is about the greatest man I ever knew. Mildred passed away in 92, right before my daughter was born, but she was the only one we told we'd have a girl and name her Janie for my mom. From her I get a love of sports (OSU COWBOYS!!) a tall frame and a touch of arthritis (not her fault, I know.) I've always loved visiting with cousins and aunts and uncles in Arkansas and the beautiful hills around the area, and my wife Bonnie and I have our own ties there now, having been married at Pleasant Ridge in 1990, so our names will always be in the books in Marion County, too! I could rattle on more, but that's all for now. Looking forward to visiting with y'all! 2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Donna, The Historical Genealogical Society of Marion Co AR does, indeed, have both volumes of the Clem family history. However, I'm sorry to tell you that we're not interested in selling these books, as you probably can understand. They are in our Research Room for anyone and everyone to use - and they do get quite a bit of use, believe me. One of the primary reasons we exist is to share with everyone as much information about Marion Co as we can acquire. Unfortunately for you and your brother, these books fall into this category. I'll mention your request at the next meeting, but please don't get your hopes up. Meantime, see if Dee has kept a list of purchasers of these books. If so, you might consider contacting some of them to see if they're willing to give them up. 3. Hi Folks! Richard Pence is a well known genealogist who has instructed many a beginner and experts as well on the ins and outs of genealogical research. His reply to a question about finding American Indian ancestry is worth reading on several levels. -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! Dena: If you can't find "them" ANYWHERE, how do you KNOW "there was one there somewhere"? Aside from "the three brothers" and "the name was changed at Ellis Island," the most commonly believed (and rarely true) family tradition in American genealogy is the one about Indian (aka "Native American") ancestry. Like most other genealogical puzzles, the solution likely lies in carefully tracing each generation back. If you then encounter a person whose background might lead you to believe the person could be an Indian, then this is the time and the place to try to determine the details. Starting out by looking for (to put the quest as it is most commonly expressed terms) the "Cherokee princess" is almost certain to leave your genealogical vehicle spinning its wheels. If you are asking if there are census records which state that persons were "Indian," the answer is yes. If you asking if all of them who were full or part Indian are so recorded, the answer is no. Even if the answer were yes, this wouldn't provide you with any shortcuts - you still will want to check the census records for each family in your tree. In the final analysis, that is probably the only way you will be able to answer your question. Somewhere in the archives of this newsgroup I believe there are a number of discussions about Native American family traditions as well as some of the other commonly believed - but seldom true - ones. The essence of these discussions is that it is usually a losing strategy in genealogy to set out trying to prove your are related to some specific person - be he or she rich, famous, an Indian or a horse thief. There are simply too many blind alleys in this approach. Having preached that sermon, I have no doubt you will disregard most of it because you KNOW what you know. Worse, if your belief turns out not to be true, it will be my fault! That's what happened to me a couple of years ago when I proved with a stack of documents that a certain lady's "full-blooded Osage Indian" great grandmother was a nice German girl born in Indiana far in both distance and time from any Osage Indians. Her response was, "Why are you trying to destroy my heritage?" Beats me. What I thought I was doing was supplying the facts. <g> Regards, Richard Pence Fairfax, Virginia "Richard A. Pence" <[email protected]>

    2. I have recently put the index to the Frierson Bivouac of Shelbyville, Tennessee on the Rock Fence Genealogy website. This Bivouac was the confederate veterans who lived in the Shelbyville area who made sure the cemetaries were decorated and that there was proper memorials for the veterans who passed. They also petitioned for people to be accepted in the local veterans home. Some local information, lots of names in various spellings. This book is/was available at the Shelbyville Library. That is where I purchased mine. I think I paid $8 for it. It is hardback. There is information on how to obtain lookups. If your family came from that area like mine did, be sure and check it out. Don't miss the Boone County and Carroll County, Arkansas burial association index also. This will give you when people passed away who were members of these associations and where they lived at death. Also, lots of school pictures from the Lead Hill, Boone County, Arkansas area. Hope this helps someone. Thanks, Reta
