Thanks, Don, that gets me a step further up the tree! BTW, do you have birth place for either? One of the interesting twists here that I didn't know of was that "Granny Ott," My GGrandmother Huldah Minerva Ott (1891-1973) was the daughter of her dad's 2nd wife...and was named for his first. Wonder what Mary Rea thought of that idea! I have a cousin that I always liked an awful lot and upon suggesting his name for my son, I remembered that his name is also the name of an ex-boyfriend of my wife that she doesn't have fond memories of. Do any of y'all have the military info for James W. Patterson (1817-1881)? I know "Captain in Confederate Army" (Earl Berry's 1977 "History of Marion County," quoted at http://www.ozarkhistory.com) and came to AR in 1848, but I'm having a little trouble finding unit #, service record, ect.Mysty, thanks big-time for your time digging that stuff up for me. Final Note-- I mentioned recently the illness of Jean Roberts, the wife of my uncle Micheal (son of Binum Roberts and Mildred Ott Roberts) I spoke ! to my dad last night, and he'd heard from mom who'd traveled with her sister Tommie and her hubby Gordon Darrell to Kansas. They've move Jean from the home to a hospice, probably in Topeka though I'm not sure of that. Mike works for the Kaw Valley school district out of St. Marys, and work's been a headache lately, too. Prayers appreciated. Darren Don Ott <[email protected]> wrote:Mysty, Believe the parents of Mary Jane Rea are Thomas J. Rea b. 20 May 1832 and Amanda Ham b. 26 Sep 1833, m. 22 sep 1853. Mysty, Thanks so much for the information. Is there any info the cemetery records for Mrs W W Smith? The Fairview/Wildcat list on the net has her buried next to Wesley and Elijah. Also anything stating Wesley was a Union Civil War Veteran? Betty has had me puzzled for a while but the info you gave made me realize she is Nancy E Smith b 1875 according to the 1880 census. Mary was living with her grandmother in 1860. We've not yet been able to determine the parentage of Mary Jane Rea. In the 1880 census for Harrison, Boone Co AR, William P Ray has a daughter named Mary J but she wasn't born until 1862. It's entirely possible this could be the right one, but the Ott records as well as the census indicate she was born in Sep 1854. Sorry, Peter, but the cemetery records have no further information on Mrs. W W (Melvina) Smith. Because none of this Smith family was in AR during the Civil War, there will be no record of whether or not Wesley W Smith served with Union forces. He was living in MO then so that's where you'd have to look for that information. You might try the Morgan Co MO web site for openers. Knowing almost nothing about this particular Smith family until you brought it to my attention, I did a bit of research which I'm sending (below). That's my bunch, Mysty! I'll fill in a few spots just for your interest and to see if there are any members of this family on the list... Mysty McPherson <[email protected]> wrote: Hi Don. Checked the 1880 US census for the entire country. The only one that came close is Loring L Roberts b AR 1878, son of Joseph A and Mary E (___) Roberts, in Washington Township, Boone Co AR. Mary Elizabeth James, she was the son of Newberry James, Jr of Mississippi, who moved up to AR after the Civil War. Loring is the birth certificate name, but he went by Loren. Strange, I'm not sure why but there it is. His wife left the house when the kids were quite young because of what was considered at the time to be serious health issues, I'm not too sure of the story on that one. "Didn't find a Binum Dixon Roberts, but he could have been born after the 1880 was enumerated." B.D. was born around 1911 or in that ballpark. Born in Yellville he and the family moved to the tiny town of Norfolk, OK, to care for a Family Farm. That was a pretty typical act for PaPa, who worked hard everyday and took care of responsibility and his family. Farmed for a time in Norfolk, but that wasn't an era in which one wanted to farm in Oklahoma, so the family moved into "the city" of Cushing. He worked for Deep Rock until being laid off there in 63 or so. Then they moved to the "BIG city" of Stillwater where he worked as a carpenter at Oklahoma State University until he retired. He lived in Stillwater until his final months, spent at the Oklahoma Christian Home in Edmond. Also found, in "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" NOLA MILDRED OTT (daughter of Thomas Peter & Huldah Minerva [Patterson] Ott) b MCAR 22 July 1915 Both Tom and Huldah are buried in Pleasant Ridge. Tom died in 1962, but "Granny Ott" lived long enough for me to actually remember meeting her. Much beloved character in the family, my mom still uses her "chocolate gravy" recipe. Tom was born near Rush to John B. and Mary (Doshier) Ott. Huldah born 1891 and died July 8, 1973. Her parents were Robert F. Patterson (found on voting records in Marion C. in 1893 and on a Grand Jury in '99) and Mary (Rea) Patterson. Family lore holds that Mary had at least a semi-significant Cherokee lineage. I believe she may have been the daughter of a William P. Rea, of Union Twp in the 1860 census. I also believe Tom's mother to be named Rebecca, born 1847 in TN. m 11 Oct 1933 BINUM ROBERTS. Moved to Stillwater OK. Married, as were Tom and Huldah, at Pleasant Ridge. As they should, given that they met there. PaPa was traveling around the area teaching classes in "good music" at various churchs, and MeMa (Mildred) came in to learn singing. Now, you know why my Bonnie and I felt like Pleasant Ridge was a good place for us to marry! Children (surname Roberts): Tommy Lee, Tommy married Gordon Darrell Cargill, have two sons (Paul and Tim) and have 4 grandkids and several "steps." Worked until retirement at lumber yard in Perry OK. Joe Donald, Joe's semi-retired from Smith College in MA after having taught at University of Minnesota for some time. Has one son, Joshua Tobias Roberts, who is a sound engineer in the SF Bay area, has worked with bands like Squirrel Nut Zippers and Cranberries. Joe and Barbara divorced not long after Josh was born and Barbara and Josh moved to CA, so he's a lot less "hillbilly" than the rest of us, but he's a darn good guy, even with tattoos and bleached hair. Joe remarried and his wife's a history bug who loves snooping around old churches and graveyards. Michael Dwight, Micheal...don't ask me why they spelled it that way...is asst. Superintendant in Kaw Valley KS, not far from Topeka. Married and divorced the same woman twice, then married Jean. Sad to report Jean's in a tough cancer fight and not doing too well at all. Prayers appreciated. Jean has 3 sons from a previous marriage, all grown. Mike never became a dad. Nancy Jane. Hey, I know her! After getting married in '64 her education at Oklahoma State was postponed by my arrival in 1966, we had my brother Roger who is an ordained minister, professional musician, and Physician's Associate with a degree from University of Oklahoma Medical School. Anyone who follows Contemporary Christian music knows of Mark Schultz, a good friend of Rogers. His wife Liz and daughter Gracie (4) live in Edmond just a few blocks from mom and dad. My sister Mindy lives down in "The City," Oklahoma City, and works as a dog groomer. I moved to Missouri in 87 and work on radio station KBIA every morning. Good story there...one morning, my news guy does a story about the State Senate putting off plans to re-do the layout of the floor because of the costs involved. After the story, I mentioned that it's a good thing my mom's not in the Senate or they'd have to move the furniture every 6 weeks. I got an e-mail from my cousin Claudia in Arkansas threatening to tell my mom I was saying snotty things about her on the radio...KBIA streams our signal and she'd been listening. My Bonnie and I have two kids, Kristian is 12, Janie Beth is 10. As for the folks themselves, Dale Michael ("Mike") Hellwege was born in Enid OK and now teaches Chemistry at University of Central Oklahoma as he has for nearly 40 years. Mom retired from teaching at our church after a stroke but she still gets around well. Sorry, got kinda long winded there, just some fun stories I enjoy sharing. Hi Don. Checked the 1880 US census for the entire country. The only one that came close is Loring L Roberts b AR 1878, son of Joseph A and Mary E (___) Roberts, in Washington Township, Boone Co AR. Didn't find a Binum Dixon Roberts, but he could have been born after the 1880 was enumerated. Also found, in "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" NOLA MILDRED OTT (daughter of Thomas Peter & Huldah Minerva [Patterson] Ott) b MCAR 22 July 1915 m 11 Oct 1933 BINUM ROBERTS. Moved to Stillwater OK. Children (surname Roberts): Tommy Lee, Joe Donald, Michael Dwight, Nancy Jane. Maybe these tidbits will be helpful. Have some info for you, Peter, and am researching some of the other names you mentioned. It would be helpful if you could supply birth dates for all these people - and spouses, especially for the females. Smith is a very difficult name to work with - there are so many of them <sigh>. Not having an 1890 census doesn't help any either. "Cemeteries of Marion Co AR" by Lester & Marian Burnes. Smith Cemetery, Marion Co AR. Elijah Smith b 14 Feb 1874 d 2 Aug 1962. Unfortunately the census doesn't state any relationship except "Other." Hope this helps. Peter, I have a copy of "Cemeteries of Marion Co" - I'd be glad to help. Let me know who you're looking for. Sincerely, Susan

I don't usually respond to these "gatewayed" messages. However, I'm curious about this genealogy festival in Flippin AR in May. As vice-chair of the Historic Genealogical Society of Marion Co http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion, I've not heard anything at all about this event nor received any announcements about it. Do you know what group is sponsoring this event? Do you have any name or group our Society can contact for further information? The only similar event we're aware of is the North Arkansas Ancestor Fair the first weekend in June at Leslie in Searcy Co AR. This event is close to 15 years old, is free, and is always heavily attended by researchers interested in around 10 or 15 area counties (Fulton, Izard, Marion, Baxter, Boone, Carroll, Searcy, Newton, Madison, etc). We sure would be interested in whatever you can tell us about this festival in Flippin. Thanks. I am seeking information on these cemeteries. I think Fairview cemetery is still well used but I don't know about Smith Cemetery. Both are off State Road 178 about half way between Flippin and Bull Shoals. I am researching Smiths that moved to the area from Missouri before 1900 including, Wesley Smith b Dec 1837, his wife Melvina Smith b Mar 1843 and any decendants, including children William, Sylvester, Elijah, James, Andrew, Nancy, Melvina, Isabell. I understand that there is a Wesley W Smith who was buried in the old Wildcat cemetery, also his wife and perhaps his brother Elige(sic), and wonder if there is a connection, but I have no date of birth or death. Hope someone can help Peter S
