    1. [ARMar] Death in the family
    2. Darren Hellwege
    3. I've just learned of the death of Dr. Jean Roberts, wife of Micheal Dwight Roberts, in Topeka KS. My Aunt Jean was a beautiful, sweet woman who had a lot of pain since being diagnosed with breast cancer and is in the loving arms of Christ now and will never hurt again.Micheal is the son of Binum Dixon Roberts and Nola Mildred (Ott) Roberts, both of Marion County. I seem to recall that Jean was an Arkie too, but I can't remember her birthplace. I'll post an obit ASAP.Micheal's going through a lot right now, and prayers are greatly appreciated. 1. Re: [ARMar] William "Squirrel Bill" Wood
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. OK, Don. I'll try to clarify. These two men are NOT one-and-the-same. They were somehow confused in Big Blue. So ignore what was said about them in Big Blue 'cuz it's not correct. William J "Squirrel Bill" Wood b GA ca 1811 m Pamela ___ b TN ca 1815. In Union Township MCAR 1840 with 2 males under 5, 2 males 20-30, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 15-20. In Union Township MCAR 1850. This man is NOT a descendent of Obediah Wood. Their known children are James Franklin "Frank" Wood b 1838, Martin J Wood b 1842; Nancy J Wood b 1844, William B "Dick" Wood b 1845, Sarah E Wood b 1846, Hannah Agnes Wood b 1849. This family is not found in the MCAR 1860 census, although children are here in 1870 which indicates they were probably in MO during the war years. Parents for William J "Squirrel Bill" Wood are not known at this time. William A Wood Jr b Anderson Co TN 1800/10 is the son of William "Dancin' Bill" & Hannah (Austin) Wood. He married MCAR Elizabeth "Betsy" Goodman/Coker who was born in AL 1808 and died in AR (no death date found). He died during the Civil War 1861-1865. No military service has been verified for him. Their known children are Elizabeth J Wood b 1842, Araminta Wood (no birth date found). As I said, it's entirely possible that Joe Dempsey Coker and [Mary?] Brown (daughter of Bob Brown) are the parents of Elizabeth "Betsy" Goodman/Coker. It's also entirely possible that Mary is a sister to Girard Leiper Brown (see MCAR Families). This Brown family was quite close to the Buck Coker family, often intermarrying. However, Joe and Mary were married in Knox Co TN ca 1808. Mary died in TN in childbirth in 1811. Joe then went to AL to join his brother Leonard. While there he married Ainey/Anna ___, a Cherokee, b Tuscaloosa AL 1802. Leonard reportedly brought Joe's children and slaves to AR ca 1814 (see Turnbo). Joe and Ainey/Anna came to AR sometime after Leonard. Their first child probably was Catherine Jane Coker b 1829 in AR. Of course, none of this takes into consideration that Cynthia Rogers, based on the known birth dates of her children, some in AR, was probably Joe's 2nd wife rather than his third. This would lead one to think that Joe probably married Ainey/Anna in AR rather than AL. And here's where the real confusion gets totally out of hand <groan>. Even though we've not found any hard, cold facts to verify just who Elizabeth "Betsy" is, I'm inclined to think she's the daughter of Joe and Mary. Just as I'm inclined to think Mary is a sister to Girard Leiper Brown. Like I said, I hate to think I'm perpetuating age old errors. I'm a firm believer in documentation rather than supposition or wannabe-ism. Hope this helps, Don. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Ott" <[email protected]> To: "Mysty McPherson" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 20, 2003 3:45 PM Subject: Re: [ARMar] William "Squirrel Bill" Wood > Well yes I am confused, I do show William A. 3. As you know, Don, there are several errors in the Obediah Wood family in "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900." It's taken masses of indepth research to correct most if not all of these errors. Some, unfortunately, will probably endure forever for lack of primary and/or secondary documentation. 1. William J "Squirrel Bill" Wood is NOT a member of the Obediah Wood family. If you'll read carefully what SC Turnbo writes, this becomes quite clear - especially when compared with census records. WILLIAM J. "Squirrel Bill" WOOD b GA ca 1811 m PAMELA ___ b TN ca 1815. In Union Township 1840 with 2 males under 5, 2 males 20-30, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 15-20. In Union Township 1850. 2. William Wood Jr is the son of William [A] "Dancin' Bill " or "Billy" & Hannah (Austin) Wood. WILLIAM WOOD Jr. b Anderson Co. TN 1800/10 d 1861/5 during the Civil War m MCAR ELIZABETH "Betsy" GOODMAN/COKER b AL 1808 d AR. Recorded land in Union Township 24 March 1852. In Union Township 1840, 1850. It's entirely possible that Elizabeth could be the daughter of Joseph Dempsey & Mary (Brown) Coker. However, Joe and Mary were married in Knox Co TN ca 1808 (males seldom married before they were 20) and Mary died in childbirth in TN in 1811. Their 3 known children - Sarah "Sally" b 1809, William T "Prairie Bill" b 1810, Harden b 1811 - were all born in TN. Joe went to Jefferson Co AL 1812 or 1813 to join his brother Leonard. Joe is in AL 1813 when he marries Anna/Ainey ___, a Cherokee. I know this must be rather confusing, Don, and I'm sorry I can't answer the Goodman/Coker question more accurately. Without further documentation, I wouldn't want to make any "for sure" statements and continue perpetuating the errors in both the Obediah Wood and "Buck" Coker families. I can always send you the list of sources we've used to document both the Coker families as well as the 6 Wood families in MCAR so that you can double check us. Let me know, okay? 2. Robert W. King
    3. Hi folks! I just ran across something that proves Americans know how to hate, but we try to be fair about the matter. I'm sure that as school children you all heard of Benedict Arnold who traitorously went over to the British during the Revolutionary War. What many of you may not remember or were never taught was that Arnold was perhaps the most brilliant American general of the war and was almost single-handedly responsible for the creation of the first US Navy, the naval victories on Lake Champlain and the victory at Saratoga, New York. At Saratoga, Arnold was wounded in the leg. But he was then snubbed by the Continental Congress, denied promotion and treated rather shabbily - being relegated to the command at West Point on the Hudson rather than being given a more active field command. At that point, he went over to the British. Many years later, when the Saratoga Battlefield Park was created, they wanted to honor his contributions to the battle and the American Revolution, but not honor him personally. So on the obelisk of the battlefield monument is a statue ... of Arnold's wounded leg! -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! Zim Ott took said gun and sent said other man to his maker. In spite of the fact that this was perfectly legal at the time, legend as I understand it holds that Zim split town pretty quick and laid low for some time. The rifle supposedly used in this shooting is held, I believe, by Burl Ott over in Marshall. 3. Oh, yes, Darren. I've heard several variations on the story of Zim Ott's gun. Heard it first from Don Ott. What's the tale your family tells? I've had nearly 40 years of digging fun tracking down my family. As with you - nary a horse thief. The real "fun" began when I went back across the ocean and got hints of connections to some gentry types. Good Grief, Charlie Brown!! What an explosion of ancestors that created!!! Still have a couple of loose ends in this country that I doubt will ever be solved (ostensibly one was "spirited away" by the Masons after a sort of Masonic war which included at least one murder) 'cuz the records have been either lost or erased or locked away in some of those dungeons untouched by the FIA <sigh> Even so, I've thoroughly enjoyed these decades of research, learning lots about history, sociology, politics, etal, and sure wouldn't want to have to trade them for some "canned" family tree laid out all nice and neat and clean - and boring. My grandfather Binum Roberts from Bellefont, his great-grandfather was in the War and I've had a good time digging up information on the Mississippi 34th and his brigade, and I'm starting to work on studying the Rock Island Prison where he was held after being wounded at Perryville. At the same time, I'm running down some of my dad's family in places like Buetzfleth Germany. My grandmother Hellwege is still alive and seems genuinely flattered that I'm interested in her family, in Wents and Schlossers and Koesers and Hellweges (everyone reading this message out loud just spit all over their monitor) and has helped me put a human face on all this. I can, with a little imagination, do the same thing with these other folks, have feelings for a guy who lived 150 years before I was born but was still "kin." My mom was closer to 2nd an! d 3rd . And I've still not found any horse thiefs...but I wonder if the folks on this list know about Zim Ott? Don, does that name ring a bell? Do you know about Zim Ott's gun? I'd hate to tell a tale that's been spun here before of a shared relative of Don's and mine. I also found a few things on the Patterson line we're playing with here, but I'm still tying loose ends together before I splatter it all over this list. Darren Mysty McPherson <[email protected]> wrote: Often the military records from the CW aren't as complete as we'd like them to be <groan>. Pretty sure we found the data about Robert Fulton Patterson in "Arkansas Pension Applications" by Desmond Walls Allen. Of course, living in AR, RFP would have had to apply for a pension in AR even tho' his service was in a different state. Don['t have that particular book here at home, but will check it next time I get to the library. The record you found for James W Patterson as a 2nd LT *might* be the only one surviving and *might* be before he was made captain. However, it could also be for a totally different JWP. Ah, well. Confusion reigns - and we all get wet <g> The only alternative I can suggest is to go to the NARA site (National Archives) and request copies of *all* the papers in the file for JWP. It's pretty expensive - but well worth it if it's the right fellow. Just found out that Levicy Lucinda Roberts was the daughter of Robert Gaines & Mary "Molly" (DeWeese) Roberts. Also found out that her father died in NC in 1840 and JWP was appointed guardian of his minor children - including Levicy. And her grandparents were Robert & Nancy (Cody) Roberts. All in Buncombe Co NC too. For more information on the Roberts and DeWeese lines, you might contact Jeanne Dark [email protected] She sent me this information. Oh, and you might try the Buncombe Co NC web page for Civil War data. Not only have I struck out finding James W.'s war record (I think I remember him being called "Capt" at one point, and the James W. Pattersons I found in North Carolina were a 2nd Lt. and a Private) but now I look over this again, and upon checking a Muster Roll online can't find R.F.P. in the 66th. 3. Darren, here's what we have in "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900" for James W Patterson. JAMES W. PATTERSON b NC 15 April 1817 d MCAR 16 Feb 1881 bu Jefferson Hall Cemetery m 25 July 1843 LEVICY LUCINDA ROBERTS (daughter of Lewis Roberts) b NC 21 July 1826 d MCAR 24 July 1895 bu Jefferson Hall Cemetery. Sold his land in NC to his brother-in-law Garrett Roberts. Emigrated 1868, settling near Eros. Stayed with family friend John Phillips until land was found to buy. Captain in Confederate army in NC. In Prairie Township 1880. For details on his service in the Civil War, you'll have to go to NC records. There might be information on such sites as http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com or www.genforum.genealogy.com. It's possible that he served in the same unit as his son, Robert Fulton Patterson.
