    3. Dolores, Bruno is a town/community in Marion Co. I believe it was located in Hampton Township in 1898. There's some pretty good Marion Co township information at http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion. Snowball is a community in Searcy Co a bit west of Leslie. Not sure what township it's in. 1. [ARMar] VERY exciting stuff! and cemetary question
    2. Darren Hellwege
    3. Hey, y'all sorry I've been scarce lately, been digging on my dad's side and not doing too much on mom's side which is where all the Marion County Hillbillies are. Anyway, I'm digging up the line of mom's dad, B.D. Roberts of Bellefonte (I know, I know, Boone County...he got married at Pleasant Ridge and lived a while in Yellville, so he gets half credit) and was running up through his mom, Francis Abigail Stanley, her mom, Mary Jane Horner (married James Dixon "J.D." Stanley that some of you will know of) and HER dad John Horner, Jr. (we're back to the "old country," Tennessee, now, although Mary Jane is known to have died and is probably buried in Marion Co.) Now, John Horner Jr.s mom, I have discovered, was an Elizabeth Russell from Tennessee. From there, I'll just cut and paste my notes. It's kinda long and (like most of what I do) a little disorganized...trust me, it's worth it. I feel like I hit the lotto. George Russell is Elizabeth's dad, her mom was Elizabeth Bean... 9a. George Russell, b. 1720 (Loudoun Co., VA) d. 1796 (Grainger Co., TN; or KY) m. Elizabeth Bean. Notes: George Russell followed William Bean, Jr. as the first white settlers in Tennessee, the Watauga Settlement. George Russell was a Captain in the Revolutionary War, serving with Watauga Riflemen at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He was killed by Indians while he was on a hunting trip. Another of his children, George Russell, Jr., was a friend and fellow Indian Scout (Creek Nation, 1813) with a man hed grown up near, Davy Crockett. 10a. William Russell 9b. Elizabeth Bean, b. 11-25-1720, (Loudoun Co. VA or St. Stephans Parish, Northumberland Co., VA), d. 1796 (German Creek, Grainger Co., TN) m. George Russell (9a) 10b. William Bean, Sr. b. about 1700 (St. Stephans Parrish., Northumberland Co., VA ) d. unknown, m. Margaret Hatton, around 1720. Notes: Only known child of John and Elizabeth Bean. Son William Bean, Jr. and wife Lydia Russell credited as first white settlers in TN, thought widely to have erected a log cabin at mouth of Boones Creek, in 1769. Their son Russell was first white born in TN. Lydia Bean was taken captive by Cherokees July, 1776, along with 13 year old Samuel Moore. She was condemned to die, but Cherokee Pretty Woman Nancy Ward exercised her rights in that position and granted pardon to Lydia. Samuel Moore wasnt so lucky, and was burned at the stake. One of the reasons Lydia was spared is that she taught the Cherokee how to make butter and cheese, and how to weave fabric. This made the Cherokee less dependent upon traders, and also Europeanized the Cherokees sex roles, with women sewing and cleaning and cooking while men farmed. Part of the making of butter and cheese she taught was the holding of milk cows, leading to larger livestock herds and the need for more manual labor, which led to the Cherokee holding slaves, including the first Cherokee slave owner, none other than Nancy Ward, who was awarded the slave of a fallen Creek warrior following the Battle of Taliwa. Several of William Bean and Lydia Russells children fought for the colonies in the Revolutionary War, another in the War of 1812. 11b. John Bean, b. 10-4-1675, m. Elizabeth Unknown (St. Stephans Parrish., Northumberland Co., VA ) d. 1755 12b. William Bean, b. around 1655. Note: There is a website with very extensive lines of the Descendents of William Russell at http://www.varleyphoto.com/genealogy/bios/russell/Russell%20Descendancy%20Chart.pdf Many of the stories of the Russell and Bean families comes from http://www.russell.larkcom.org/ another page with good info and genealogy on the Horner and Russell families, many of whom made it, ironically enough, to Marion County, AR, can be found at http://eturner.com/Everett/ Now, is that awesome or WHAT? I've already visited with a few of my family who are also now "Sons (or Daughters) of the American Revolution" and a few are pretty excited. I know I am! OK, if anyone's read through that, here's the question. I've traced this one: Andrew James Carroll Roberts, b. 11-10-1817 (Hamilton Co., TN) d. 4-12-1891 (Bellefonte) m. Lucretia Ann Lawson bu. Mcelhose Cemetary (Boone Co., AR) Which of course, raises a question...where the heck is the Mcelhose Cemetery? I never heard of it. 3. Ah, that explains why there's no marriage record in MCAR. The courthouse burned to the ground in early August 1887. Not one shred of paper survived this fire. Absolutely no county records before that fire exist today. Because both of these people were underage, permission for this marriage had to have been given by someone - usually a parent for one or both. I'd suggest you check the 1880 census to see if you can locate them then. The 1880 census for the entire United States is on line at http://www.familysearch.org. Click on the "search" tab at the top of the first page. Then click on the word "census" in the lefthand column of the 2nd page. 2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Reta, here's some information for you Timeline. 1803 - The Louisiana Purchase occurred, bringing about 1 million acres west of the Mississippi under the ownership of the US. A portion of the Purchase became Louisiana Territory and covered what is today LA, AR, MO and probably more. 1811-1812 - New Madrid (MO) earthquake. 1812 - Louisiana Territory was divided into smaller areas. Arkansas became part of Missouri Territory at that time. 1813 - 31 December - Missouri Territory was subdivided into counties. AR was in New Madrid CO, Missouri Territory. 1815 - 15 January - New Madrid CO. was subdivided. AR was then in Lawrence Co. Missouri Territory. 1819 - July 4 - Missouri Territory was subdivided. Arkansas Territory was created then and encompassed Lawrence Co. 1823 - 1 November - Carroll CO. was created from Lawrence CO. Arkansas Territory. 1825 - 2 October - Lawrence Co. AR Territory was subdivided. Izard CO. AR Territory was created. 1835 - 3 November - Searcy CO. was created from Izard Co. AR Territory. 1836 - 15 June - Arkansas Territory granted Statehood. 1836 - 29 September - Name of Searcy CO. AR changed to Marion Co. AR. 1838 -13 December - Searcy Co. AR recreated out of lower half of Marion Co. AR. 1838 - December - Being Trail of Tears passed thru Marion CO. AR, meeting up with a trail coming down from MO, passed thru/near Carrolton, Carroll CO. AR. and arrived in Indian Territory (OK) January 1839. 1857 - September - Mountain Meadow Massacre in Utah Territory. 1861 - 1 June - AR State Legislature adopted (by a one-vote majority) the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, thus seceding from the United States of America. 1861-1865 - Marion Co. courthouse burned at least twice. 1869 - 9 April - Boone Co AR created from the western portion of Carroll Co AR. 1887 - August - Marion Co courthouse burned to the ground, reducing all county records to ashes. The only thing I know about the Mincy Meteor is that is was FOUND in Taney Co MO in 1857. Have no idea when it actually fell to earth. A courthouse could not have burned in Harrison during the Civil War. The courthouse would have been at the county seat of Carroll Co, which I believe was, at that time, Carrollton. I'm pretty sure that Harrison wasn't in existence during the Civil War anyway. The "important town" in eastern Carroll Co seems to have been Bellefonte. [Dubuque and Lead Hill were located in Marion Co at that time.] HGSMCA has an interesting little book called "Marion County - The Divided. 1861-1865" which discusses events in an around Dubuque and includes the description Roger Logan wrote for the "History of Boone Co AR. Turnbo indicates Dubuque began being built ca 1840. On 12 May 1854 the Worth PO was moved to Dubuque. A Marion Co sheriff was shot and killed on the road between Dubuque and Lead Hill. This little book is only $5 + $1 shipping. Another little book the Society has is "Tutt - King - and Everett War" - also $5 + $1. It tells the story of this infamous feud - the only time the State Militia was called to the aid of a county in AR - which ended in 1849. There's much history for Marion, Boone, and Carroll Cos on their web pages as well as on the Mountain Meadow Massacre web page. And Roger Logan is very thorough in his discussion of Boone Co history in "History of Boone Co AR." Don Ott and others have much data on the Benge Trail of Tears on the Internet. Hope this is all helpful. 3. Don, is DuVall your g-grandmother's married name or her maiden name? If it's her married name, what was her maiden name. I find reference to a couple of DuVall families in and around Dodd City (that's west of Yellville) which may be a clue. She is buried in or near Yellville. The name on her gravestone would be LIZZIE (ELIZABETH) DUVALL b. 1857. I do not know when she died, but I suspect it was around 1920. I would be grateful for any tips you might have to locate her grave. Thanks > > Don Jones > WA State > >
