I want to send of for the records, but you have to know all the answers first. Thanks for your help Linda
Can anyone provide specific directions to Upper and Lower Campground cemeteries? Thanks, Peggy
I'd like to make a couple of corrections to one part of Jonelle Ellis Russell's information under the SANDERS/BEST portion of this e-mail: George W. Jr (#5 on the list) married Mary Elizabeth POLK, daughter of Evan S. Polk and Jannie Miller. George W. Sanders and Drucilla Best's son - Charles Burton Sanders (#12 on the list) married Viola Tranquilla POLK on March 11, 1852. (not Vida Park as stated). Viola was also a daughter of Evan S. Hello Friends, I read the Madison County Digest regularly and see many surnames I recognize although they are not part of my family. I sat down at the computer this evening to work on my own family, but here I am seeing some of those surnames you are searching in the papers I am reading. Eddie, I dont know if this will connect to your VAUGHNs , but you might be interested in reading Elsie VAUGHNs contribution to Madison Musings II. She discusses her family history with many interesting stories. Elsie told the interviewer that William Vaughn was born in Wales in 1750. He came from NC with his sons. Samuel and Daniel, and were among the early settlers in Washington County before coming to the Vaughn Valley near Hindsville. John HIND from Warren County, TN arrived in 1832 and settled where Hindsville is now located. His brother William settled 2 1/2 miles southwest of Hindsville. Elsie and her husband, Otis, both descended from Daniel Vaughn. There are many names in her account. Madison County Genealogical Society might have Elsies research files by now. The past two years I visited with Elsie in a convalescent home. I believe her nephew was attempting to have Elsies research organized. HINDS, Madison County Musings III has an interview with Willie CALICO Bohannan in which Wiilie tells how the mother of Lydia Ann Smith was the first person buried in Hindsville Cemetery. Lydias mother was a sister of John HINDS. Mark and the other PHILLIPS researchers My ggrandfathers (Joshua Thomas ELLIS) first wife was Mary Palestine PHILLIPS. Mary Ps granddaughter, Pearl Herndon Crews, researched this line. Pearl is now decease, but I have preserved as some of her material. Mary Ps parents were Samuel Grover PHILLIPS and Lelia Elizabeth Johnson. Samuel Grover (b 1832 AL d. 10 Mar 1885, Madison County AR), was a son of David PHILLIPS (25 Aug 1802 - 2 Oct 1845) and Kitty Sanders (8 Nov 1806- 16 Feb 1887). David was born in TN and died in Wesley, Madison County, AR.. Kitty died in Huntsville and is buried in the Huntsville cemetery according to Pearls records. PHILLIPS/SANDERS David PHILLIPS was born 25 Aug 1802 in TN. No marriage date for he and Kitty SANDERS is noted in the files. Their children were: 1. John Bessie married in 1846 to Lucinda WILLIAMS 2. Samuel Grover married 5 Sep 1850 to Lela Elizabeth JOHNSON 3. Levi married Susan Clark 4. James married in Washington County, AR 1858 to Caldona FINE 5. Harris/Myers Looking for information on Geer or possibly Gun (Gunter?) Harris, born about 1831 in Tennessee, his parents both born in Kentucky. On 1880 Benton County Census, Osage Township, he is shown living with his wife Mary, born 1839 in TN, her folks also born in KY. Their children listed in 1880 were Buck, born 1858 in Missouri, Boid, born 1863 in Missouri, Sophrona, born 1867 in MO., General, born 1868 in Arkansas, Harrison, born 1872 in Arkansas and Arthur, born 1876 in Arkansas. Apparently the family lived in Missouri from at least 1858 to 1867, coming to AR around 1868. I'm searching for ANY information on this line, as I suspect Sophrona is the same person as Sophornia Belle Harris, my great grandma, who lived in Marble, Madison County, Arkansas from the late 1800s until her death sometime between 1910 and 1920. Marble township in Madison County borders Benton County, Arkansas. She married William Sim (Simon?) Myers about 1884. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also looking for information on William Sim Myers, who appears as Simon or Simie Myers or Mires. He was born about 1862 either in Tennessee or Indiana and by 1884 he was living in Arkansas, and married Sophornia Belle Harris. They lived in Marble, Madison County, Arkansas and raised 6 children, Myrtle, Walter, Essie, James Edward, Bertha and Irvin Lee. Sophornia died sometime between 1910 and 1920 in Madison County. William Sim (or Simon) died sometime after 1920. His parents were either born in Indiana or Tennessee, according to the census. Not much else is known about him, from the one photo of him, he had blond hair and blue or green eyes. Sophornia was dark haired and eyed, perhaps part Indian? Would like to know where both were from, their parents' names and dates of both their births and deaths. EDWARDS/MCQUISTON/MCCUISTON : Looking for information on Edward Edwards, born in England or Wales, who immigrated to the United States and became a railroad engineer. He married Dorothy Elizabeth McQuiston, daughter of Israel and Hannah (Lusk) McQuiston, probably in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Edward and Dorothy had 4 children, before he died in a train accident in January of 1883, when Dorothy was 6 months pregnant with their youngest child, May Florence Edwards. Dorothy moved to Gove County, Kansas with three brothers, this was where May was born on April 4th, 1883. Later, Dorothy moved to Madison County, Arkansas with her brother Joseph and his family. May married Calvin Leroy Vaughan and the young couple lived with Dorothy. Dorothy died sometime after 1900. Seeking the names of Dorothy's other children and place and date of her death. Also seeking any information on Edward Edwards, such as his birth and death dates, and when he came to the United States and from where. He may have died in the train wreck in West Chester, PA on January 3rd, 1883. I'm also looking for any information on Dorothy's ancestry, I know the names of her parents on back on the McQuiston side, but not the names of the parents of the spouses who married into the McQuiston line, such as her mother, Hannah Lusk. Dorothy's earliest known ancestor is John McCuiston and Isabella Crelon, both of Ireland. Their son Robert was born in Derry County, Ireland in 1710 and immigrated to the United States. When I was looking at the census last night I stopped and looked at some of the Hines, not Hinds but Hines, because a friend of mine had me looking for that name. I'm almost certain that I saw a Nancy-- it just rings a distinctive bell. Unfortunately I have no idea what township that I saw it in. It would be easy to have erroneously listed her as Nancy Hines so it's worth a shot. I will keep it in mind as I do the lookups for the other people. If I run across it I'll let you know. I didn't notice any Harps but I will keep an eye out for them. You don't know the township so I will keep it in mind when I'm doing specific searches for the others. Widener is on State Highway 38 in St. Francis County. This is between Forrest City, AR and Memphis, TN. She was with her husband in the 1860 Benton Co., AR Census and a widow in the 1880 Census of Madison Co., AR. Her above listed married daughters are in the 1870 Madison Co., AR Census but I cannot find Nancy anywhere during that census. Ken Robertson [email protected]
Hi Julie My gm and gf were from Madison, AR. Her name was Lena LaVina Berry and his name was William Berry Sams. She was born in 1870 and he was born in1867. Never have been able to figure out who his parents were. They were supposed to be 4th cousins. Here parents were Adolphus Icedral Berry and Kittie Phillips. Both of his wives, Adolph's or Dolf, were named Kittie Phillips. To make things worse, both Kittie's fathers were named George. Lovely huh!!!!!!! If you have time, I sure would like to get info that is in the 1880 about these people. Thanks a million Barilynn Grant
Fellow Madison County researchers, I have on loan right now the 1880 census for another couple of weeks. I'm willing to look up names for you-- IF-- you know the township! I unfortunately don't have the time to look through the entire reel of film for each request so I must limit it to township lookups. I wish that I did have the time to look through the entire county for each of you, but it's just not possible for me to do that right now. If you are looking for a Johnson or a Reeves then you are in luck because I wrote down each and every one in every township for the entire county of Madison. Let me know if I can help you, Julie
Just signed on the list. Am looking for info on my g grandmother Sarah Evans, dau of Samuel Evans & Nancy Williams Evans. She married a Jesse P. or J.P. Vinyard. I am trying to locate where they were married at. Any help would be appreciated. Also trying to find out more info on Samuel. Thanks Paula in Minnesota
The year 2000 is a Census Year. Most of the census will be taken by mail, so after you have filled out your census form why not make a copy of it and file with your important papers. Then your family will not have to wait 72 years to learn about you." Got this from another list and thought this was an excellant idea...just thought I'd pass it on!!!!!
