On Monday 27 March you wrote desiring information on Madison County Newspapers and Funeral Home. Hi Eddy, The Madison County Record is a weekly newspaper published by Alta Faubus, the former wife of the late Governor Orville Faubus. This paper has been in existence continually since the early 1900. I know that there is microfilm of various issues. I don't know exactly where the microfilm is available. The Madison County Record's address is P. O. Drawer A, Huntsville, Arkansas 72740 and the phone # is (501) 738-2141 and fax # is (501) 738-1250. A great number of funerals are directed by the Brashears Funeral Home of Huntsville. Some are handled by Funeral Homes in Fayetteville and Springdale. Brashears however handles most of them. Sorry I don't have their address. Hope this helps, JT Anderson jander4843
Thanks Joy for all you do. Just wish some papers existed back to 1910 for me! Lori Sorrells Researching: DOTSON, LANE, YOUNG
Thank you Joy Russell. Also I want to thank you on the many articles you have written which have included some of my family. I have enjoyed reading them so much. Have a Great Day! Vickie
The Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society has microfilm of ALL AVAILABLE newspapers of the county. A complete set begins with 1926 and continues to present, except for a few missing papers in the late 1928-1932 area. We can look up and print copies of these obituaries for a small fee. It is 50 cents per page for a copy. If there are numerous ones to look up, we will charge a fee to do so. Written requests should be submitted to the Society at P.O. Box 427, Huntsville, AR 72740. We MUST have death dates in order to know which newspapers to look in. If the person died while living in Madison County, usually an obituary appears in the paper. Joy Russell
Dear List: Today Madison County, Arkansas was absolutely as beautiful as a place could possibly be on a perfect spring morning, the sun shining down warmly and the air so pure it just smelled like sweetness itself. The redbud trees were fully bloomed, the forsythia blazing, japonica and spirea completed the trio. Daffodils were everywhere, especially along the road where old home sites once stood. I was there today at about 10:00 a.m., driving from Eureka Springs through Boxley Valley down to Clarksville and I-40. After that incredibly beautiful ninety-mile drive, I-40 was hard to take on the trip back to Memphis. To All, Good Luck Hunting, Raye Blackman Searcing for Descendants of Kimbal Alonzo MOSES, Drakes Creek, circa 1880, and ancestors of his wife, Mary Jane HARRISON ps. I need more information on the "Madison County Musings." I am relatively new to this list and have just been checking for surnames, but this sounds like something I need to know about.

Hi, I have some rather odd questions, but her they are. First, I'm preparing to send off for a Death Certificate for my great grandma May Florence (Edwards) Vaughan, who died on December 22, 1957. The certificate form indicates they'd like the name of the funeral home where the funeral took place, and I don't know that. My great aunt Evelyn would have known this, but she died about 5 years ago, and my Mom died 2 years (almost) ago, so I don't know who to ask. So do any of you know what funeral home did the service? She is interred at Clifty Cemetery. Which brings me to my next question; I've asked in the past for Newspaper information, such as when some of the Madison County - or nearby counites- papers were published. Does anyone know if there was any paper published in December of 1957 that might show May's obituary? I'm trying to find out as much as I can on her father, Edward Edwards, who died 3 months before she was born. He died probably in PA or maybe Kansas, where May was born. He was a Welsh immigrant and I have NOTHING on him, except that he was an Engineer that died in a train accident. This information comes from the book THE VAUGHANS by Mickey Vaughan. I'd love to find out where that information came from. May's mother was Dorothy Elizabeth (McQuiston) Edwards, and I dont' even know when she died, although I know it was after 1900. I do have her McQuiston line traced back to Ireland, however. She was born in Westmoreland County, PA to Israel McQuiston and Hannah Lusk. I just don't know when Dorothy was married to Edward Edwards or where. May (daughter of Dorothy) Vaughan's husband was Calvin Leroy Vaughan. I'm also looking for obituaries for Calvin's folks, George Washington Vaughan, who died August 24, 1913 in Madison County, his wife Mary F. (Henderson) Vaughan who died October 26, 1910 in Madison County, and George W.'s father, Benjamin Franklin Vaughan, who died April 7th, 1903 also in Madison County. On Ben Vaughan, I strongly suspect there had to have been an obituary, as he served for years as Sheriff and Assessor, as well as 4 years as a Representative. Of all the names above, May's, Mary's, and Ben's are the most important for my research. Does anyone know if any of the libraries in NW Arkansas has any microfilm of obituaries and/or newspapers from the time frame given above? If anyone knows anything on any of the people in this post (including Dorothy Elizabeth Edwards' husband, Edward), even if it's just family stories or whatever, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Eddie Davis [email protected]
Hi: Regarding the inquiry about when the next "Madison County Musings" will be out.. It is at the printers now and we expect it to be mailed around the middle of April. The Spring issue is always mailed in April and the Summer issue comes out in June or July. The reason why the Spring issue is mailed in April is that membership renewals continue to come in to us that late and if we do not mail the books with a bulk mailing, it then costs us about 4 times as much postage to mail them individually. We are striving to keep our costs down so that we do not have to raise the membership dues to cover printing and postage. Joy Russell Editor
Oh my! I am so glad you brought this up. I am mailing my renewal today!!! I can only imagine how beautiful the hills of Madison Co. are this morning. It is beginning to be a beautiful spring here in S. Missouri and I know that Madison Co. is always ahead of us. Take a look at those hills for me today and give them a smile!! Thanks! Nancy J. This link is a wealth of information of old stories about people in southern Missouri/northern Arkansas.....the Ozarks. It contains the Turnbo manuscripts online and also three regional magazines, no longer in print and priceless, Bittersweet, Ozarks Watch and White River. If you have ANY ancestors in the Ozarks area....you must check this out. It contains a story about my ggggrampa Jonathan Moody and how his feet were burned but he still wouldn't tell them where the money was! Be sure and bookmark this site because it will take months to read them. Enjoy! Hello: In Arkansas there is a law that protects burial places. This law specifically provides protection for graveyards. It applies to burial places with five commercial grave markers. But I believe that commercial grave markers could apply to old ones with names on them, because who's to say that they were not purchased from someone who made a living making them? It is Senate Bill 505, Act 1317 of 1995 which states: "An act to amend Arkansas code 5-39-212 regarding the unlawful fencing of cemeteries to change the definition of cemeteries, to assure greater access to authorize county judges to improve and maintain access roads leading to cemeteries and for other purposes: Subtitle: To amend the Arkansas law regarding the unlawful fencing of cemeteris, to permit greater access and to allow counties to improve cemetery access roads. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS Section 1, Arkansas Code 5-39-212 is amended to read as follows: "5-39-212. Cemeteries - Access - Debris - Disturbance (a) It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, corporation, partnership or association to: (1) Construct any fence on any property in such manner as to enclose any cemetery unless suitable access by automobile to the cemetery is provided by gate or otherwise. The word "cemetery" as used in this subsection is not intended to apply to any private family burial plot which contains less than five (5) commercial grave markers. Northing in this section prohibits the placement of a fence around any cemetery for the purpose of defining boundaries or protection of grave sites: (2) Place any brush, tree tops, rubbish or other unsightly debris on any cemetery grounds, or to disturb, damage, or carry away any marker in a cemetery. (b) Any person, firm, corporation, partnership or association violating any of the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be fined in any sum not less than ten dollars nor more than one hundred dollars, and every day that the violation shall exist shall be a separate offense. SECTION 2: The county judges of the several county governments in Arkansas shall be authorized to improve and maintain any roads across public or private lands used or to be used for access to a cemetery. The cemetery access roads shall be constructed to a standard and nature to permit their use by automobiles. A cemetery as used in this section means any burying place for the dead, a burial plot, a graveyard, or any land, public or private, dedicated and used for the interment of human remains, which includes at least five (5) commercial grave markers. SECTION 3: All provisions of this act of general and permanent nature are amendatory to the Arkansas Code of 1987 Annotated and the Arkansas Code Revision Commission shall incorporate the same in the Code. SECTION 4: If any provisions of this act or the application thereof to any person or circumstance is held invalid, the invalidity shall not affect other provisions or applications of the act which can be given effect without the invalid provisions or application, and to this end the provisions of this act are declared to be severable. SECTION 5: All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this act are hereby repealed. we go just about every year, but cannot remember the date. Will find out, though. Seems like it is real close to Memorial Day. There is also the Old Alabam school reunion & lots meet there at that time.
Can someone tell me the date for Decoration at Alabam Cemetery. Thanks, Marilyn Cain
I've been working with Dennis Muncrief on building a new Website for Cemetery Preservation. So far we have a real basic site up, but the potential is there for it to grow into a great resource. We are planning on having a page for every state with links to the laws, both state and local, regarding Cemetery Preservation, state and groups within that state. Also, a list of cemeteries that are currently endangered. We will be looking for people that will be willing to take responsibility for a state page and locate the needed links. The site is not yet really open for business, but I would really like if if anyone on this list would take a look at it and offer any comments or suggestions to me on it by email. My address is [email protected] The url for the site is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~socs/index.htm We hope to take the page live in about a week.
