    3. There was a portion of land in this area that encompassed several counties north and east of Logan Co AR that were "guaranteed" to the Cherokee. Of course, that clause in the treaty about "forever" only held true for about ten years from 1817 til 1827. The present day counties involved all or in part were: Johnson, Boone, Marshall, Baxter, Newton, Franklin, Conway, Van Buren, Cleburne, Faulkner & Crawford. The tip of this land extended over the western border of AR from Crawford Co into the IT. Logan Co. The Southwestern border of this area must have been the Arkansas River, at least that was the border at Johnson and Franklin Cos. Therefore, none of the land of Logan was actually a part of this area. The area south of that river I think (stress the think) was in control of the Creeks or the Osage. There was not a treaty that made it anything that could be referred to as a reservation. In fact, the Cherokee area was not a "reservation" either. Just a technical point though since the family story would have used the term "reservation" if it involved land where Native Americans lived. There is however another possibility. The time frame of the birth rules out any actual truth to a "Indian Reservation" circa 1886. However, in the records of the BIA there are some Cherokee, Creek and others that accepted land (usually 640 acres) as a "personal reservation" and with that acceptance they declared their intent to become a citizen of the US. These records are scarce but I've read documents that mention Arkansas. The rules were that the "reservee" could not sell the land and had to maintain his permanent residence on that land. Normally, his heirs could title the land free and clear upon the death of the reservee and therefore sell it. Just giving you some clues for further research, hope it helps. Been there, researched that.
