My branch was STEWARD as well but I've found the surname on marriage , death, and census records spelled with all the above variants. I looked at all the variants in the 1880 Logan County census and all seem to have parents from Tennessee. My family were in Oklahoma by about 1910 and VERY difficult to trace.
