1. Re: [ARLOGAN] Albert Marshall's Connection to the Brays
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gerejean Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.logan/1871.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just found your inquiry about Albert. In 1850, Johnson County, Arkansas, Spardra Township, I have an Albert Marshall listed also with John and Martha Tomlinson Bray, no age given, state born - Indiana. Index #699, Family # 75. In the same census, it lists a David Marshall in the houshold of William Holmesm, wife - Jemima Tomlinson Holmes. They were from Indiana. David's age was listed as 19. I have a marriage record registered in Franklyn Co, AR Feb. 26, 1858 by M.D. Fox, for a David Marshall, age 26, and Martha Jane Tomlinson, age 14. The marriage took place at the residence of Reuben Tomlinson, Martha's father. In 1860, David and Martha and son William are found living close to Reuben and Wife Matilda Johnson Tomlinson. After that, there is no record of David or William. Matilda apparently died in childbirth, date unknown. Martha took care of her siblings and after their father was shot by bushwackers at the end of the Civil War the children were separated. Until I found the record of Martha's marriage to David, we knew nothing of it, only her second marriage to Peter Zumalt. I am very interested to learn of what happened to David and William. Since David and Albert were living close to each other, I wonder if they were brothers, or at least cousins? I have information from another researcher about Albert Marshall. Hopefully we can piece together information about David and Albert. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her listing of "May" is the first I've seen also. Wally Scott is a real mystery to me. His son, Monroe is m Grandfather. I am in contact with the daughter of Monroe's brother, William. Her family says he was Wally Scott but another cousin in Kansas says he was called Wiley Scott. My Mom's Bible says simply Scott. I have a copy of his obit from a McCurtain County newspaper and it lists his name as Scott Tomlinson. His grave marker says W.S. Tomlinson. Since the post by Jimmieryan73, I looked at 1880 Census and I find W.L. Tomlinson listed Freedom, Polk, Ark and from the wife and kids names and the dates, I suspect this is my GGrandfather. I searched the 1920 census and I find a Wesley L. Tomlinson, 72, living with his son, William who is Monroe's brother. In the 1930 census, there is a W. Scott Tomlinson , 80, living with William. I have written for a copy of W.S.'s death certificate s! o will be interesting what name is on that. Sorry for the mix up, I am not real good on the computer. I descend from Reuben Tomlinson's eldest daughter, Martha Jane, married 1st to David Marshall, married 2nd to Peter Zumalt. I have never found a listing for Wesley L. My great aunt, daughter of Martha and Peter had one with the name "Uncle Scott" which is the same picture as another researcher who said it was WS a.k.a. Wiley/Wally. I think May H. is from another family. None of the researchers I have been in contact with had her listed. I pulled a binder this afternoon that has a lot of my files in it and am going to see what I can find. I will post what I have later for you two to see. How many pages did you send in total? From your info, I now see why I lost my GGrandfather, Wally Scott, Wiley Scott, W.S. or just plain Scott. In the 1860 Census, he seems to be listed as William S. b 1854. Under Reuben's and Matilda's children, he seems to be listed as Wesley L. Tomlinson b 1854. Also listed under this heading, is May H. Tomlinson b 1864. I have no info on her at all. She was born in 1864 and according to family stories, Matilda died in childbirth in 1864 after being frightened by confederate soldiers. Could Matilda's child have lived through all that and could May be that child? I have much more to add to you info. Just wanted to hurriedly thank you for your help and I will get back to you later. Do you descend from one of Reuben's children? Marie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They had a son named Pierce. They divorced. Don't know if that helps or not.

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. I have a copy of a letter written after Arbell and Martha Jane reunited in 1913, I believe, shortly before Martha died. It doesn't give a date for their mother, Matilda's death. As I recall, said something about "early in the war", but I think Arbell was born in 1864 so it had to have been after that time. Arbell and Tolbert were the younger children of Reuben and Matilda. Someone told me that John Roark, in whose household you would have found them in 1870, was a relative, but I don't know anything about that. I was told by descendants of Hiram and Peter, that the reason they went to Kansas was to hopefully avoid the war because they were Quakers. However, they were drafted into the Union Army. They also mentioned that Martha and W.S. Wally/Wiley?? Scott were sent to Kansas to live with uncles there. The grandparents, John and Martha were there too. Something had to have happened to Martha's first husband, David Marshall and their son William, but I have not been able to learn what it was. Think they were listed next to Reuben in 1860 on the census. The letter I mentioned earlier said that Martha helped take care of the younger children after her mother died. Supposedly Reuben died the day peace was declared...shot to death in front of the children by bushwackers. The letter said he stayed away from the family because he was a Union sympathizer and had gone home that day to tell the children what to do on the farm. My great-aunt, daughter of Martha Jane Marshall Zumalt, wrote quite a few of her family stories down in her later life. I pieced together that Reuben's family went with a cousin's family to Texas, I am guessing before they settled in Logan Co. AR, but I don't have a clue which cousin it might have been. It said that Martha and her cousin were picking berries and the family got ahead of them. The fathers looked back and saw that Indians had surrounded the girls. They rode back and rescued them. With inquiries like I am getting now, I am going to HAVE to get my files in order!! :) Keep in touch. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
