Book by Laverne Galeener-Moore on UNDERWOOD line. Also have her CD bios. Matilda Underwood was first wife of Dawson Winn who was b. 1828 Thirsk, Yorkshire Eng. and came to U S in 1839 with parents and five siblings-they settled in Morgan Co OHIO first. Matilda was dtr of Margaret nee Underwood and Willis Underwood, first cousins, whose fathers were brothers--Reuben (Margarets father) and James (Willis's father) Underwood . These two men were the sons of George Underwood and Mildred Rucker. Father of George was Nathan Underwood jr-wife Elizabeth Anderson. Also have info on another Morrison line that I cannot connect with that were in OHIO and this involved a mystery about a man who was found drowned in a well on his own property. Virginia M. No, I don't know where our emigrant Daniel Nunnally came from and I don't research family outside of this country. Even though an ancestor may have arrived on a ship from England or Scotland etc, that doesn't mean that country is where they were from or lived. So, instead I focus on their descendants in this country so that others can find their kinnection easier. Your grandpa William Andrew WHITMAN married Letha M. [NUNNELEE] sister of Charlotte Elizabeth [Nunnelee] who married his brother Christopher Columbus Whitman. Letha was born 09 May 1873 in Logan Co AR - died 11 Feb 1917 Logan Co AR and is buried with William Andrew in the Caulksville Cemetery, Caulksville, Logan Co AR. Letha was the daughter of Jeremiah Franklin Nunnelee and Elizabeth Isabelle [Shaver] who married 28 Jun 1853 in DeSoto Parish LA. Letha and William married 21 Dec 1890 in Logan Co AR and I know of 7 children: Granville R, Mearle Buel, Clara, Earle Clarence, Donna, Ila, and Houston. Which of their children is your ancestor? William Andrew Whitman was born 06 Jan 1861 in Newton Co MS - died 02 May 1917 in Logan Co AR. William Andrew and Christopher Columbus Whitman Jr were 2 of the 9 children born to Christopher Columbus Whitman Sr and Elizabeth [Edmonds] who married 21 Jan 1847 in Perry Co AL. Their other known children were: Samuel, Nancy, John, Mary, Martha Jane, Mercer Mosely, and Robert. Christopher Sr and Elizabeth both died in Logan Co AR and are buried in the Harvell Cemetery, Logan Co, Ar. Your grandma's sister Bettie was Charlotte Elizabeth [Nunnelee] born 17 Apr 1881 in Six Mile Twp, Logan Co AR - died in Nov 1841 Lisbon, Claiborne Parish LA. Bettie 1st married Daniel Bluford SUGGS 12 Oct 1881 in Logan Co AR and they had 3 sons: Albert Nunnelee, Daniel Bluford Jr, and Robert Edmond. Daniel Sr died 20 Nov 1888 and is buried in the Mountain Cemetery in Logan Co AR. Bettie 2nd married Christopher Columbus Whitman Jr 29 Jan 1891 in Logan Co AR. C.C. was born Nov 1856 in AL and died 1951 in LA (I have not been able to find his death record) Bettie and C.C. are buried in the Rocky Springs Cemetery, Lisbon, Claiborne Parish, LA with their dtr Mrs Gussie Cook, son Herbert, and Bettie's son Daniel Bluford Nunnelee Jr. ================================================== I haven't researched your Whitman ancestry but I think there is a BIG clue in their neighbors on the 1850 and 1860 censuses because the Andrew and William Whitman appear to have followed them from Perry Co AL to Jasper Co MS......... 1850 Perry Co AL/Severe/HH 10-10/pg 337b (09 Dec 1850) Also in Perry Co > Andrew Witman age 20 AL William Whitman age 33 WHITMAN, Christopher /HH/wm age 26 AL Whitman, Elizabeth /wf age 24 AL Whitman, Nancy E /wf age 03 AL Whitman, Saml R /wm age 01 AL 1860 Jasper Co MS/Buckley Store/HH 788-793/pg 478 (12 Sep 1860) Next door > HH A. Two of them are descendants of your grandma Letha [Nunnelee] and her 1st husband Daniel Bluford Suggs and I think they can give you information on your Whitman ancestry. 3. According to Logan County records, Zephariar Copeland, 19, married Lula Belle Glidewell, 18, both of Paris, January 7, 1892. Book D, page 190. There is a note from A. J. Copeland in the marriage records. You may obtain a copy by sending a SASE and $.25 with your request to County Clerk, Logan County Courthouse, Paris, Arkansas 72855. Tape your quarter to a card or piece of paper so it won't get lost from the envelope. Your record is in the Paris courthouse as are all Logan County records prior to 1900 when Booneville became a co-county seat. Hope this helps. Author: Obits101 Surnames: Tillman Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.logan/3428/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Daily Oklahoman 07-14-1914 p.4 / 12 ARKANSAS SLAYER MUST DIE TODAY PARIS, Ark., July 13 - Arthur Tillman, aged 22, who is to be hanged here Wednesday for the murder of a girl, made a futile dash for freedom while being brought here from the penitentiary at Little Rock Monday. He was guarded by three deputy sheriffs in the baggage car. As the train slowed down at a steep grade he broke the fetters which bound his ankles and with a bound opened the door of the car. He hesitated a fraction of a second before jumping and that proved his undoing. A deputy sprung and seized the youth by his coat just as he leaped. The coat held and the prisoner was pulled back into the car. The last hope for Tillman vanished Monday night when County Attorney Benton refused the request of Tillman's attorney that the youth be granted a respite. Governor Hays had agreed to grant the respite if the prosecutor and judge would recommend it. Tillman twice escaped since his arrest. His first break was immediately after his arrest, when he jumped through the window of a house where he was being guarded. He was recaptured in Fort Smith a week later. While being taken to the penitentiary at Little Rock he leaped from a moving train but was recaptured in the hills the following day. ***posted for genealogical purposes only; no relation*** Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
