I have had that findagrave bookmarked for a couple ofmonths now. The death date is within a year of what I have (1888). The place (Seminole) is possible and fairly near Le Flore County, where I have established he resided. The problem is the middle initial is not his. His middle name was Issac, so it should be an "I", not a "J". I suppose that it's possible there was a mistake and my grandmother just accepted it anyway. I think I shall order the death certificate just to see once and for all. I have no idea why he would have "J" on his tombstone, but there have been stranger things in genealogy I suppose. About a year ago I was ecstatic that I had found his father, William F. Oliver and was going to order his full military records from the Civil War from NARA for $75 or thereabouts ( I had not thought he had served in the military). The date of death was right, the place was right (Howe, OK.) the name was right. Then I realized that the date of birth was off by 10 years and there is no way that my WF Oliver could be 10 years older, with the other records that I did have. I was SO sure I had the right person. But $15 is cheaper than $75 so if I might as well see if this is truly my Thomas. Hopefully, if it is, it will give me a maiden name of his mother which will be a HUGE step in identifying her. Yes, I am trying to think if he would have had to apply for a delayed birth certificate. My grandmother (his wife) had a delayed birth certificate issued to apply for social security. But I can find no evidence of ss application or passport application or anything that might require a birth certificate. He worked the oil rigs in OK, and was a coal miner in his younger years. Most likely those employers did not require proof of birth. I am working on a death certificate, but have no firm place of death, only the state. Also my sources give 2 possible years for death but no actual dates nor town. I am also working on his full sister's (Nola) records. They are very convoluted as she was married at least 3 times and got younger each time a census was taken, probably because her husbands got younger. :) I am trying to find out her year of death. Possibly she applied for a passport or SS. She's had so many last names though! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I do hope they let you have a look at those records. In my opinion, ANY record has genealogical value...maybe not to me, but perhaps to someone out there looking for some string to keep them going. Perhaps they mean they are so damaged as to be illegible (whatever records they might be). This information puts me at an official deadend. I cannot think of any other record that would provide the name of Thomas'mother. Thomas was not in military and had no full brothers (with the same mother) who were in military, he died in 1938 so no social security. Unless he had a delayed birth certificate issued for some reason, I'm not sure where else I can find this information. I have a likely year of death and state, so I will see whether I can get enough info to get a death record. Thanks for your help! I doubt there were any kept in Logan County. I didn't mean to imply there were "illegal" records. I juet meant there were none that would satisfy legal requirements. I was told that there were some old records that had been moved out of the courthouse for storage and that they are in a huge jumble of a mess. However, when I asked about viewing these, I was told there was nothing of any genealogical value in them. I have been promised that if they should ever find anything that would be useful, I will be notified. I check every time I am back there just to be sure I haven't been forgotten. The ladies in the Paris courthouse are super helpful and friendly, and I know they do all they can for us. I wish you luck in your search. Could you expand a bit on your response? Are you saying that there are no Logan County birth records for that year? I read that the courthouse with records were destroyed but that happened well before 1888. Or are you saying that nobody kept any birth records in Logan County at that time? Is there somewhere "illegal" that these records are kept? Very confused. Tha chances of me finding a family bible with Thomas's birth listed are practically nil. Since it is pre-1914 I know it is unlikely to be filed with the state vital records. I have the date, Dec. 16, 1888 and the place: Booneville, Arkansas for Thomas Oliver. I cannot find any indexes online or at Family History Library. I'm not sure who to contact that would have this record, if one was filed. Thanks in advance. I probably have his birthday, but will have to dig it out. If you have access to microfilm records of the Booneville newspaper, you might find it mentioned in it. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: ARLOGAN-L <ARLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Oct 25, 2010 8:10 am Subject: [ARLOGAN] 1888 Logan County Birth Record This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I sent off for my great great grandmothers death certificate. She died in 1923 at Paint Rock, Jackson, Alabama. She was named Callie Parnell or something close, the certificate is very messy and hard to make out. Her father was Alferd Parnell, he was born in Dent, Missouri probably between 1810-1825. Her mom was Mary Carto, my bet it was suppose to be Mary Carter. Callie was born in 1850 in Wayne County Tennessee. Callie married William M.(Bud)Nash either in Tenn.or Alabama. They had children in both of those states. Many of the kids moved to Arkansas and Mississippi. Does this info provide enough information that someone might recognize some small bit and may be able to help. I am at a deadend. I can not find out anything about when William Nash died or much else then what I just mentioned. Thanks for your time! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
