I once called the office in Little Rock after receiving a letter telling me a search did not reveal the death certificate I had requested. Luckily I happened to have the number of the certificate, and I asked them to look to see whose name was on that certificate. Well, what do you know? It was the name I had requested that they could not find. I got my certificate in the next mail! Do you suppose Tom died elsewhere and was taken back for burial? That could explain why there is no death certificate for him in the county you think it should be in. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. On the application sheet it says that records began to be filed in 1908, but it became mandatory in 1917. There should be a record for him somewhere. I think I am going to re-submit with a photo of the findagrave and the information of a middle initial "J" or possibly "I", even though the death record application specifically states that they search the proper name AND variations of the name, ie. "Tom", as well as derivatives such as initials ie. "T.J. Oliver". Hopefully the photo of the grave stone will motivate the searcher that there definitely IS (or should be) a death record for Thomas in Seminole County. What I am trying to do is find the name of my grandfather Thomas's biological mother. Ollie really was my grandmother's name. :) Nee Ollie May Brannon, but that doesn't quite have the ring of Ollie Oliver, does it? ;) I was hoping the death certificate for Thomas might give me some maternal lineage information. Arkansas started keeping death records in 1914, but it was in the 1940s before every death had to be reported. If the burial did not go through a funeral home, and most did not, people were not required to report it to the state until the mid-1940s. If that is the case in Oklahoma, then you may not be able to get a death certificate. I know it is frustrating, but it is a boat we have all been in, unfortunately. This is not a case of misery loves company. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I just had a thought related to your grandmother Ollie. Was her first name Ollie or was that a nickname for Grandmother Oliver?? Also, maybe Thomas was married before and the first wife died in childbirth and he married again? Sometimes we get so stuck in what we think we know that we don't consider other options--thinking outside the box so to speak. :-) Good luck! I received a letter back from the Oklahoma Vital Records that they were unable to locate a death record for Thomas. The letter said they searched years 1937-1957 and searched all counties. They cashed my check but will do one more search if I give them more specific information. I did not include his middle initial in my request because again, the uncertainty of his true middle initial, but I included all the information from the tombstone plus his spouse's name and the county of Seminole. How can this be? The letter says that "All our records date back to October of 1908". If I want them to look again I need to include more information and I just don't know what more I can include unless the middle initial "J", but then it might be "I" on the death certificate. I am so disappointed! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I wouldn't have said Issac. Just shows to go! As for the economic situation of the people governing their record keeping, I don't think that had a lot to do with it because there weren't a lot of people then who had money. I think some people kept records and some didn't. It is pretty much the same today. I know many people who can't even tell me the full names of their grandparents, much less the names of their great-grandparents and aunts and uncles. They will say, "They were gone by the time I was born," or "They died when I was little, and I never really knew them." I find that so sad! Good luck in your search! I'm glad the tombstone turned out to be the right one. Have you considered that the tombstone inscriber misread an I for a J? The stone of my mother's little brother has his name misspelled. It says Gene Ivan when his name was Gene Iven. The latter is pronounced! with a short i and was my great-grandfather's name. And I have looked at the censuses, and definitely the "J"s could be "I"s, it's hard to tell. I looked at his draft card to see how he signed it and his signature is unreadable really. Looks more like a middle name with an "I". The Draft recruiter worte it as Izzia. Also, family history has his middle name as Issac. My Aunt (his oldest daughter) wrote down some genealogical info for us and wrote his middle name as Issac. I know Thomas had a nephew named Issac too, so maybe it is a family name. The whole thing is a mystery and hopefully we will solve it soon. One thing I am finding out is that names, family relationships, etc. just wasn't so important to some people back then. This side of the family was dirt poor and I think they just scrabbled to survive and so I don't think there was a lot of effort in remembering family connections and names etc. There really is no family "paperwork" or pictures or records that have been passed down to family members.! Maybe he had two middle names! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
