    1. [ARLOGAN] Names in Western Arkansas
    2. Anyone can spell either of their names anyway they choose to which can drive researchers nuts. I have seven different spellings for one branch of my family. A name that has fascinated me in western Arkansas is the name Pleasant for a male. I have been told it is a "Quaker" name, but I am unaware of many if any Quakers in the Scott/Logan County area.

    3. The migrations that interested me on Quakers started in PA, then to VA/NC circa 1765, then to TN,AL & GA. By the time the families got to TN there weren't any Quakers in the family but we can only guess that a popular name was handed down from that era. There are some things that your best S.W.A.G. is all you will have. It may be just as true that someone had a neighbor by that name that they admired and they used his name and how will we know if that person had Quaker heritage. 1. [ARLOGAN] Arkansas-specific names?
    2. Amy Rupp
    3. In reading the census and other records, I often run across a name that is very common in one Arkansas locality but is relatively rare elsewhere. One example I can think of is Acord -- the one "c" spelling... another is Cagle, which is everywhere! I don't have an Acord in my lines, but I have at least one Cagle. Are there other names that you fellow researchers have noticed to be particularly "over-represented" -- meaning far more common in the Arkansas area or county you are researching -- than in the rest of the United States? I would love to know which names. Thanks, Amy

C." Yarbrough b: 14 Feb 1921, Scranton, Logan Co., AR, | d: Aug 1962, Olympia, WA THE BOOK (above) states Martha's maiden name to be Desho - It was actually Deshazo. I have this on an audio tape made by Cloid Wesley Yarbrough. ALSO - DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING of D. C. Yarbrough above? I know he moved to Olympia, WA after WWII and had 6 boys and 1 girl. I do not know who he married. I ordered the Social Security information for him which states: At age 24, Discheo Clouid Yarbrough lived in Wright, AR when he applied for SS#. States he was born in Scranton, Logan County, Ark. Father, James C.(Cloid)Yarbrough and mother Emma Hughs. He was unemployed at the time, 10-19-1945. He wrote his name: D. C. Yarbrough. Even though the SS records say Discheo Clouid, I think his name was most likely, Deshazo Cloid, as Deshazo was his mother's maiden name and his father's middle name was Cloid. The 1957 obituary of his father, James Claude Yarborough states that "D. C." was living in Olympia, WA at that time. Also the SS Index showed that he died in Aug 1962, Olympia, WA. I would like to know more about his descendants. THERE ARE MANY GAPS IN MY RESEARCH OF THIS FAMILY, esp with the Weavers. I am told they lived around Scranton, Logan County, but that is all I know. Any help would be appreciated. Loeta (Yarbrough) Venable

    1. [ARLOGAN] William Meredith Yarbrough
    2. Tom&Loeta Venable
    3. While I'm at it I might as well add another Yarbrough sibling, William Meredith. He was the son of James and Louisa Childers Yarbrough. He was born October 16, 1852 in AR, married Texanna Carolyn GILMORE August 10, 1870 in White County, AR. They moved to Logan Co around 1879. Children of William M. and Texanna Gilmore YARBROUGH: 1. Louisa Elizabeth YARBROUGH, born August 25, 1874, married around 1888 to John MASSEY. In 1898, she remarried to James W. LOWENSTEIN. 2. James Cartwright YARBROUGH, was born December 07, 1875. He died in 1882 and is buried in OK. 3. Idona YARBROUGH, born 1877, died at 6 months of age. 4. William Thomas “Tom” YARBROUGH, born March 06, 1879, married to Martha Ann “Aunt Cecil” BEST and died April 08, 1954 in Fort Worth. They had children; Margaret and Dorothy Meredith. 5. John Wyley YARBROUGH, born 1881, married August 04, 1898 to Ella VARNELL. They had a daughter named Emma. 6. Idella YARBROUGH born 1883, died in 1885 and is buried in OK. 7. Lee "Roy" YARBROUGH, born March 19, 1885 and died March 16, 1910 in Kansas City, KS from a gunshot wound he received during an argument over a meal ticket. 8. Maud Mae YARBROUGH, born March 27, 1887 in Hunt, Johnson County, AR. She married July 24, 1902 to Jeremiah "Jerry" Lamar Jones RHINEHEART. "Jerry" Rhineheart was born 16 May 1873 and died 29 Mar 1929. Maud Mae died 14 Sep 1967. They are buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Logan County, AR. Children of Maud Mae and Jerry Rhineheart: 1.) Thomas Leon, (m.Johnnie Lee Baker) 2.) Ola Marianna,(m.Sam Gardenshire) 3.) Voicey Lucille,(m.Manny Buck) 4.) Jerry L.(d.1909) 5.) Texana Obedience,(m.Louis Apple, 2nd-Bo Ransom) 6.) David Meridith,(m. Hazel M. Durning) 7.) John William,(d. 1930) 8.) Alton Washington,(m.Mary Russell) 9.) Hazel, (m.George Atchison). 9. Mary Meredith YARBROUGH, born October 24, 1888 in Logan County, AR, married James F. BUTLER, and died October 08, 1986 in Fort Worth, TX. Had one child; William James "Bill" Butler. On March 12, 1888, while the family lived in Indian Territory near the town of Muldrow, William "Bill" Yarbrough was shot to death and Texana was injured by three men who rode up their house on horseback. He had recently had a quarrel with two of the men, Sam and John Massey over a cattle deal. Suspect, John Massey was the husband of Bill and Texanna Yarbrough's fourteen year old daughter, Louisa Elizabeth. The Massey brothers were tried for murder in the Federal Courthouse at Fort Smith, AR. The trial was judged by a jury but presided over by Judge Roy Parker. Both men were sentenced to 6 years in the AR State Penitentiary. Seven months after her husband's death, Texanna Yarbrough gave birth to a baby girl, Mary Meredith, whom she named for her late husband. She moved her children back to AR where she was granted homestead property in Logan County, on March 2, 1896. She died August 24, 1933 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX and is buried there in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. I did some research on the death and trial following of William Meredith Yarbrough and have recently added it to my website - it could be of importance as there are several names on the trial surname list that have ties to Logan County. http://loeta.net/yarbroughmurdertrial.htm I have quite a bit of information on this family, given to me by family members. So I am not requesting information but am including it since some of these people have connections to Logan County and it fits in with the rest of the family. The only other brother I have not listed is Levi "Lee" Yarbrough, whose family remained in Johnson County (Yarbrough Mountain) and has no direct ties to Logan County. Loeta (Yarbrough) Venable

    3. The Arkansas State TB Sanitarium officially started in 1910 and closed in 1973. All of its records were transferred to the Arkansas Dept of Health and placed in a repository under the supervision of the Logan County Health Dept in Booneville. (from the book "Logan County Arkansas its History and its People"). Most not all people went to a warm/hot dry climate like Arizona when they had TB to recuperate. Jim G Fresno Calif
