Larkin Johnson: Have been trying to track back before 1850 LR census. Seems to have married first wife Elizabeth b. 1805 in Morgan County Indiana 1924 (Indiana Marriages 1802-1892). 1830 Morgan Co. census shows Larkin Johnson and wife in 20-30 age range (b. 1803 and 1805), with 1 son under 5 (John L. b.1830 IN) and 1 daughter under 5 (unknown). In 1840 census for Clay, Illinois is Larkin Johnson, 1 male and 1 female in 30-40 range, 1 male under 5 (Thomas, b.1839), 1 male 5-10 (Henry, b.1835), 1 male 10-15 (John L), 1 female 5-10 (Sarah Jane b. 1832), and 1 female 10-15 (unknown, same as 1830 census). In 1850 all are in Larkin's LR home except the unknown oldest daughter. Benjamin may be related, but doesn't seem to fit in as a son -- maybe nephew or even brother. Don't see homestead papers for Larkin Johnson in LR. Widow Elizabeth homesteaded in 1871-1878 -- different land from where Larkin was in 1850? Papers say she has 6 children. Witnesses were John Trammell and Henry Johnson. Looking at map, Elizabeth's homestead is very close to BD's, with one 80 acre property between. BD's and SM's adjoin each other to the north. Have wondered if Blackston Cartwright in 1850 Tunica MS census is the BG Cartwright in 1840 LR census. In 1840 census there were: Males: 1 under 5, 1 10-15, 1 20-30; Females: 1 under 5, 3 15-20, 1 50-60. In 1850 Tunica looks like Cartwright and Matlock families are together -- maybe combined earlier too in 1840 LR? Jane Cartwright is 65, two children were born in AR, Elizabeth and Susan Matlock are similar age, both born in SC. Thanks for the geography explanation -- that helps -- and will look at the web link.
