Unfortunately I don't have any clue yet to Luella's maiden name. Re. Mildred: She definitely married a Hankins (note spelling), possibly a Clarence Hankins, but the wife of C.H. Hankens in the 1920 census doesn't appear to be this Mildred. Mildred is at home with Sam and Lou in the 1920 census, age 16. Census was done in January, but C.H. and Myrtis already have a two year old son. I recently found a picture with "Mildred Hankins ... 1968" written on the back. I know Mildred's daughter Marguerite lived in Huntsville, AL and believe the SSDI for Mildred Hankins, who died in 1972 in Huntsville, AL, is the correct one for this Mildred. The 1930 census for Gertrude Withen states her father (Dore) was born in Holland. 1920 census says he was born in Germany. Had not seen the item for Dollie in the 1930 census and will look at that. Have been looking at the Carrol/Carle census listings since you found them, and that looks really promising. I'm thinking the correct family name might be closer to Carle since Walter kept that version in the 1870 census survey. Can't wait to look at the Samuel/Luella marriage item you mention, and much more that you've turned up. Thank you, and happy Thanksgiving. Jeff Johnson was only on the 1910 census. He must have died by 1920. Some marriages in LR Co: Gracie J Johnson to Hamilton S Davis Apr 27 1918 Mildred Johnson to Clarence Hankins Feb 21 1920 No entry for Mirtis/Myrtis although the 1920 & 1930 census has her birth as 1896 and named Myrtis and married to Clarence. I think the person that indexed the marriage for them misread her name. Mildred was b 1905 and Myrtis according to the 1900 & 1910 census was b 1896-7. Also, no marriage for Effie. Clarence Hankins died Sep 11 1938 in LR, but can not find a death date for Myrtis/Mildred. Also, they are not in the cem. bk. Jane Gertrude Dore married Will T Withem Jan 13 1918; Dollie Dore married Jesse Thomas Jan 1 1908; Charley Dore married Ethel Gray Oct 14 1929 all in LR Co. On the 1920 census, Jane Dore is enumerated as Gertrude J Withem , her fthr Germany, mthr AR. That is different from the 1900 as the fthr b IL. I find Dollie and family only on the 1930 census, they are in LR. She also states fthr b Germany. I found the marriage for Louella and Sam. Bowie Co LE Dore to SM Johnson Feb 7 1899. There is a Jesse Thomas b Jul 10 1888(Pottsboro Grayson Co TX according to WWl card) who died May 1967 in Grayson Co. Dolie M.(this is the way it is spelled) Thomas died Jun 28 1960 Grayson Co TX accrding to the TX death index. This is another death certificate you should send for as it should give her father Dore's first name and her mother's maiden name. In the Arden Cem there is Charlie Dore b Aug 13 1894 died Apr 15 1934(no listing on the AR death index). Next to him is Gracie Dore(don't know who she is) Aug 18 1897-Oct 15 1930. Also, in same cem there is Gertrude Withem June 17 1896-Oct 29 1973 & WT Tom Withem Oct 21 1890-Jun 11 1951. I could not find a listing in the SSDI for her so I do not know if she has a death certificate or not, probably does because of when she died. Re. the Hudson cemetery listings, my only information is what I found on the following web site: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ar/littleriver/cemeteries/hudson.txt. The Louella in the 1900 census (apparently the same wife as in the 1910 census though the name is not recorded clearly in 1910) appears to be my grandmother. I don't know of any marriage or divorce details. The step-children in the family are named Dore, so I assume she was married to Dore before Samuel M. Johnson. Looking at your previous post, you noted there were several younger children who appeared to have dropped from sight. One was my father Franklin, who joined the navy and did not return to Arkansas. Mildred remained in touch with my father and Grace, though I don't have details of her life yet. I will look for the record I saw somewhere of her marrying a Clarence Hankins. I know nothing of Jeff Johnson, but think he is in the only picture I have of Samuel M. with Gracie, Franklin, Mildred, and a young boy (Jeff?). There is no wife in the picture, and judging from the age of the children I'd guess it was taken about 1913. The 1920 census shows two additional children from the marriage to Lou, and I know nothing more of them either. Samuel M. is listed on that census as a school janitor, if I read it correctly. You've given me so much great information to follow up on. I am truly grateful. I'll write to the state for the death certificates and will hope to share more information from that and other research. Thank you again. I have the cem bk, but do not see him or his wife listed. The only census where I have found Benjamin F Johnson (for sure) is the 1870 LR Co census. I did find him on the 1868 taxes there, but no other info than his name. On the 1870 he states he was in the CW. Also on that census, there is a lady living with them who turns out to be Emily's mother. She was Lydia Carroll b SC. Her brother is also in LR in Lick Creek TWP, Walter Watson Carroll. They were in St Helena Parish LA 1850(spelled Carle) with father John and several siblings. Then in 1860 they were in Caddo Parish with father being deceased. I looked for Benjamin there, but unable to locate in any census other than 1870. Martha Trammell and Samuel Johnson were several households away from each other in the 1870 census. She was still at home in the 1880, but can not locate him. They married Jul 3 1881 in LR. He was 19, she was 27. SM Johnson married Ida B Richardson Mar 13 1892 & then married Mrs Lou Hudgins May 17 1916. In the divorce bk, there is a listing for SM Johnson and IB Johnson divorcing Jan 9 1899. So, who is that with him on the 1900 by the name of Lou? Where did they marry? And, if Martha Trammell died in 1904, where is she in 1900? There is a Lou Johnson died Sep 3 1938 LR Co & a SM Johnson Feb 3 1929. You can send to the state for the death certificates and it should tell you who his parents were and where he is buried. The Samuel M. Johnson you're discussing was my grandfather, and I too would like to know more him and especially his parents Benjamin F. Johnson and Emily, and his younger brother William. I've found no further information about Benjamin, Emily, or William, but recognize some of the information you bring out about Samuel, and learned more from reading your posts. I'd thought Samuel must have been married prior to the 1900 census, but hadn't come across the 1881 marriage you refer to (Martha Trammell). His wife in the 1900 and 1910 census is my grandmother, and his son Frankln is my father. Looking at the 1920 census I believe the "Sam" Johnson who appears there with wife "Lou" is this same Samuel Johnson, since his children Mildred and Franklin are also with him, along with some new step-children from Lou and two new children of their own. I found a listing of names at the Hudson cemetery which suggests he may have died in 1929 and be buried there with the third wife, though her name is listed as "Lillie L" and not Lou. I also came across a record for a Mildred Johnson marrying a Clarence Hankins in 1920, and wonder if this is the Mildred who was Samuel's daughter and my father's sister. As for the more recent family history, I know much too little of it but believe I've heard Hollis Davis' name used in conjunction with "Evelyn" (wife? or sister?). And I believe he did settle in Louisiana, as your information suggests, Rayedene. I'd really like to know more about Samuel Johnson's parents, their background, and how they came to Rocky Comfort, Arkansas. That is where I'm hoping more research will lead me. You've been so helpful to me in posting what you know -- thank you very much. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John H Ford and Mertie are in the same TWP as Grace. Thier children are Ella 1917 and Marie 1919.He was b Jul 16 1890 AR. There is a John Ford who died Sep 1927 in LR Co. I think it is strange there are no marriages in the bk for the younger kids. It is like they moved away, maybe after Samuel died, maybe before. Good luck, Rayedene Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
