There is a Charly B Battle(spelled Battlle) b 1876 on the 1880 Franklin Co TN census. Mother is Anna, sisters Sarah, Dorey and Martha. No father. I believe you will find Flora in Eagel TWP, McCurtain Co OK remarried to Bud W. Walker. In the house is Edna age 8 and "Aubery" B. 14 both born in AR. They are indexed as Walker, Battle is not listed as their last name. There is a Walker dtr, Johnie K. 1yr 3mos. Also in the house is ND Johnson, father in law, age 77. There is no Chase. In 1930, Aubrey is on the Garland Co AR census as Aubrey Battle, single, teamster in the log woods. He died in Wichita Falls Wichita Co TX Apr 11 1973. He was born Aug 28 1905 in DeQueen Sevier AR and lists his parents as Charley Battle and Flora Johnson on his death certificate. Flora and Bud are in Scott Co AR 1930 with Edna and Jonnie. Flora Walker is buried in Chapel Hill cem. 1874-1954. Ruthie Hendrix Oct 27 1893-Oct 9 1969 and James E. Hendrix Sep 2 1891-Sep 2 1891(same date on both) are also buried in Chapel Hill. Could not find any death information on Charley and could not locate him or Ida in the 1930. Biggs (born June, 1864 in Illinois) and his wife Allice or Alice (born approx, 1878 state unknown) Gordon. They were married in Jonesboro on March 17, 1907. The marriage license states that Allice's name was Mrs. Allice Gordon. Apparently she was married to an unknown Gordan before Franklin Biggs. During my research, I found that Allice's maiden name might have been Swartz and that she was native american. Franlin and Allice had one child, William Biggs (born 1910 in Arkansas). After that, I can't find any information on any of them. It was rumored that Allice was placed in the Arkansas State Hospital for Mental Diseases. In 1920 and 1930, the was an Allice Biggs in the hospital. I have no proof that it is her. After she was placed in the hospital, Franklin sent his son William to live with one of his (Franklin's) brothers. Franklin's father was William Green born August, 1836 in Illinois and his mother was Mary born November, 1847 in Virginia. Any help on Franklin, Allice, and William would be wonderful. Phelps and Susan unknown. On the 1860 Natchitoches LA census there's a Wm Phelps b. 1825 GA married to Susan Phelps b. 1840 AL. There's a marriage record for Wm D Phelps and Susan Fleniken, 21 Dec 1857, De Soto LA in 'Louisiana Marriages, 1718-1925'. On the 1910 Bowie census both Susan and her brother Willie show father born GA and mother born AL. There's another Phelps/LR link though it may not be related to your family. It's the one that brought me to this subject, though. In 1914 Lem David Phelps married Beulah Mary Dore in Little River, though they are both from families in Red River TX. Beulah may be the niece of Lucrecie/Luella Johnson, married to Samuel M. Johnson and on the LR 1900 and 1910 census. Other than that I don't know why they married in LR. The Red River Phelps's seem to descend from Alpherd Phelps b. 1816 NC, in TN 1840's, to TX 1850's. The Dore (Dorey, Dorn) family is from Louis Dorn b. 1831 Germany, in IL 1860-80. Hope something here may be of help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Texas file has the Dollie (Dore) Thomas record with all the relevant info. appearing on the paper copy. It omits medical details -- no problem. It also omitted the name of the person who provided the personal/family information, and that might be helpful to know at times. Thanks for the pointer to that site, and enjoy the LR visit. The Final Certificate for a homestead started in 1884 would probably have been issued about 1891 -- maybe similar to the 1894/95 files I described. Re Duncan: that's a new name. The amount of supporting information varies with the date of the homestead. Documents following the 1862 Homestead act have generally more information, including witness statements. I have 1832 and 1860 homestead papers that just describe the land , confirm payment, may have a simple statement from applicant that land will be used for cultivation. 1878 homestead papers (Elizabeth Johnson) : land description, title certificate, payment receipts, non-mineral affidavit from applicant, final applicant affidavits (her name, date she began residence, that she resides on land with family, has made improvements, uses land for cultivation). Two witnesses John Trammell and Henry Johnson swear on joint affidavit that applicant has resided there for five years since 24 April 1871 with her six children, has cultivated ten acres, has a dwelling house, smoke house, corn crib, stables, orchard planted, well dug, garden fenced. 1894 (Benjamin D Johnson) and 1895 (Samuel M Johnson) homestead documents have quite a bit more information: land description, payment receipts, non-mineral affidavit, copy of notice published for 6 weeks in 'Wilton Advocate' with land claim and names of four witnesses, a "Register and Receivers Report" checklist from court clerk showing what requirements have been met, applicant testimony (name, age, where born, date took up residence on land, number of family members, details of land cleared and structures built, any absences from land since residence began), testimony of two witnesses on individual forms giving name and age of each witness and statements confirming applicant's claims about time on land, improvements, absences, etc. Will look into that death certificate trial site, thanks. That could be very helpful. A footnote, speaking of death certificates: Dolly Dore's death certificate says her mother was Lucinda Duncan, and another family note found recently almost confirms that -- says she was Mary Louise Duncan.
