In reply to the drug use era my thought is; considering the age of the soldiers from the War Between the States at that time I am not surprised about that. Most of those young men were in their late teens and early 20's in 1861-65 and most were wounded in some manner or other during their service. So by 1890-1900 they were old and aching, those that survived that long. I knew several older men who used Paregoric regularly during the 30's as it was used for any stomach cramping.
