    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Jones, Cummins, Lampkin, Poteet, Altheimer, Meyer, Graham Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TV.2ADI/250 Message Board Post: I have been trying to trace my Jones line for some time, with little success. Please see what I have pieced together so far, as well as unanswered questions: - John (Jonathan) Jones married Catherine ? about 1868 or 1869, probably in Jefferson County, Arkansas. This is based on their having a 1-year-old daughter in the 1870 census. I have not yet found a marriage record for them or Catherine's maiden name. Still looking for these pieces of info. - Found John (age 31), Catherine (age 21), Mary Jones (age 1) in the 1870 census for Bartholomew Township, Jefferson County, with $10,000 value of real estate (same figure as found in Jefferson County guardianship records of Mary and Charley Jones, orphans, from the early 1880s -- their lawyer, on behalf of their next friend D. H. Rousseau, was trying to reclaim a Lincoln County estate for them worth $10,000. I believe Bartholomew Township in Jefferson County was annexed to Lincoln County. Gabe Meyer and C.C. Graham were the defendants in the land suit.) - Between March, 1871/1872 (Charley's birth) and December, 1874, Catherine Jones died. - 20 December 1874 in Lincoln County, Arkansas, Jonathon Jones married Lucy Cummins (marriage record found at http://www.familysearch.org). - Guardianship papers for Charley and Mary Jones list them as heirs of Katherine Jones, and list relative Jonathan Jones (however, Jonathan is not specified as father to these children). - In the 1880 census for Whiteville, Jefferson County, Arkansas, Lucy Jones, 24, is listed with Mary Jones (age 12) and Charley Jones (age 8) as well as Emma Jones (age 5). Also in house is Emma Cummins (age 25, maybe Lucy's sister) and laborers John Scott and M. McClennen. - I think Lucy Cummins married M. McClennen (actually McClendon or McLendon) soon after 1880. See the transcription of her gravestone in Union Cemetery, Jefferson County: http://www.rootsweb.com/~arjeffer/union.htm It states that Lucy Cummins, wife of M. W. McLendon, was born Jan. 30, 1856 and died Feb. 23, 1937. - By February, 1881, Louis Altheimer had been appointed guardian of Charley and Mary Jones. - Sometime thereafter, Louis asked to be relieved from his duties as guardian, as he had been unsuccessful in securing the Lincoln County plantation for his wards Mary and Charley Jones. - In January, 1889, E.O.G. Lampkin was appointed guardian of Charley Jones. I believe that Mr. Lampkin had married Charley's sister, Mary, in June 1885 in Jefferson County (also found on http://www.familysearch.org). - In the 1900 census for Whiteville, Jefferson County, Arkansas are Millard and Lucy McClendon. They have been married for 18 years. Next door are Emma and Robert Poteet(?). Emma gives her birth information as September 1876. Need to do further research. Emma may be the 5-year-old Emma Jones from the 1880 census listing referenced above, and therefore, a half-sister of Charley Jones. Questions: 1) Are John (Jonathan) and Catherine Jones the parents of Mary Jones Lampkin and Charley Jones? 2) If so, what is Catherine's maiden name, and when were she and John/Jonathan Jones married? 3) What happened to the $10,000 estate -- how did it slip away from the Joneses? 4) Is Emma Poteet the same as Emma Jones, daughter of John/Jonathan Jones and Lucy Cummins? If anyone has information corroborating any of the above, or if you connect with any of these families, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Melissa Jones melissa@satmel.com
