Any time you find something valuable on a census record on-line please be sure to thank them. I had no idea how awful this was until I started typing it in. My eyes are crossing so I am going to stop for today. :-) Still looking for my Muckleroy/Mullikin/Russ connections out there.... 1. [ARLINCOL] Re: Old Cures
    2. I like the posting of the old cures too Betty, may I put them on the site? Does anyone out there have anymore? I never liked to tell my mother about any of my wounds as a child it meant getting the needle and burning it (to sterilize it) and then she would start poking at me. I got a piece of pencil lead (don't ask) in my leg and it took me half a day to try to get it out, I as NOT going to tell my mother! LOL I still have that lovely beauty mark! She liked to make poultices and stuff, but I don't know the recipes. I had many a bag of something stinky on my neck while I slept! In reply to the drug use era my thought is; considering the age of the soldiers from the War Between the States at that time I am not surprised about that. Most of those young men were in their late teens and early 20's in 1861-65 and most were wounded in some manner or other during their service. So by 1890-1900 they were old and aching, those that survived that long. I knew several older men who used Paregoric regularly during the 30's as it was used for any stomach cramping. Good morning Wilkie hope your getting around and able to get a few of those honey-do's done for Wenona. Bettye Hogue Bond

    3. Regarding the Recipe for colds that Betty shared with us: 1 tablespoon of molasses 2 tablespoon of castor oil 1 teaspoon of paregoric 1 teaspoon of spirits of camphor Mix and take often. - --------------------------------------- This one made me smile. :-) I've come across paregoric before in my research. Paregoric was a common medicine for colds, teething and stomach ills, especially in children. The problem is that paregoric is a camphorated opium tincture. It was a flavored and usually less potent form of laudanum. My mother-in-law says that she used paregoric for her own children in the 50s and 60s and it worked wonders (! no kidding !). By the way, do you know which decade had the worst drug abuse problem according to researchers? It wasn't the 1960s....it was 1890-1900. Most over the counter medicines and remedies routinely included alcohol, opium, or cocaine (and sometimes all three). Since this was before national standards or regulations for controlled substances, a person could legally get anything at anytime with the right amount of money. It gives us something to think about when we consider the mortality rates and "illnesses" of the time. Jo-Ann Stephens Bahai@netusa1.net Indiana

    2. Remedies of my family the Gladneys in 1875: Recipe for colds: 1 tablespoon of molasses 2 tablespoon of castor oil 1 teaspoon of paregoric 1 teaspoon of spirits of camphor Mix and take often: He noted a cure for rheumatism also: 1/2 oz. pulverized salt peter dissolved in 1/2 pint of sweet oil. Bathe the painful parts in the mixture. A remedy for sore eyes was easy to prepare: "Steep a handful of maple bark in a cup of water. Wash eyes in water several times a day." Hope they are (?)helpful (?) :-) Bettye Hogue Bond

    2. I did call Ralph Robinson & Son's and all they had was his obituary. I had never heard that before. Too bad I didn't need it. Anyone out there live near Oak Grove? Just wondering what Muckleroys are buried out there or if we have all that are there listed on the site. Thanks again, Wendy

    1. [ARLINCOL] A Mortuary
    2. I am looking for my uncle's information, I sent for his death certificate but they can't find it, my trouble is that he had a nickname that he used and I believe they didn't look for that even though I had given them the information. His name was James W. Muckleroy, nickname was Bailey, lived in Yorktown his whole life. Ralph Robinson & Son were the mortuary used. Date of death was Jan. 20, 1943. Is there someone that could call and get the pertinent information from Ralph Robinson's for me? I am not sure if it is the one in Pine Bluff or not. Please help me, this is my brick wall side of the family. 2. http://rfci.net/wdfloyd/BethelP.html BETHEL PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY Clover, York County, SC By W. D. Floyd To get to this cemetery from Clover, SC go east on Highway SC 55 for about 2.5 miles to the intersection with Highway SC 557. Turn north, left, and go 2.1 miles and the cemetery will be on your right. I started this survey February 26, 1998 and I started in the northeast corner of the cemetery. This is a large cemetery and the church was organized in 1764. There will be some errors in this survey. The markers are just too old and some are in really bad shape and next to impossible to read. Also there is lots of strange names and different spellings of the same name. There are many graves that are unmarked in any way. There are many, many old ancestors buried in this cemetery.
