I am trying to determine if a Marianna resident was a widow or a divorcee, based on indirect evidence (having just about exhausted my search for direct evidence!). She was referred to in the Marianna newspaper in the 1910s and 1920s as "Mrs. Annie Burgess", while other married or widowed women, such as her own mother, were almost always referred to by their husbands' name, e.g., Mrs. John Smith. In general, in that era, I know it was customary to refer to a widow as Mrs. John Smith, and a divorcee as Mrs. Jane Smith. But was that custom for referring to divorcees followed by the Marianna newspapers of that era? Steve
