My great great grandmother was Francis Emily Edwards Bates that lived in AR, my great grandmother was born in 1874 in Batesville. They came from TN or possible AL. Her husband was Crawford Bates, I do not know who her parents or his parents were, neither do I know their sibs. I haave a list of Crawford and Fanny's children and they did have a Jim or a James. I have a copy of a paten where the state of Ar deeded her the homestead after Crawfords death in 1882. At that time they were living in Dardanelle, AR. They are both buried At 6-Mile AR near Ft Smith. Contact if you think this is a match. I am not sure where LEE Co., is. Thanks, Donna
I would also like to know about the cemeteries in Marianna. Is any of that information on-line. Thanks so much. Patricia Stillwell Mims Rochester, NY
The purchase from France of an immense domain of territory lying immediately west of the Mississippi River and which became known as the Louisiana Purchase is recorded in every history book. Negotiations leading up to this great purchase and the details incident to it are known by every history student. However, few people realize the extreme importance a little known spot in Eastern Arkansas has in connection with this purchase. At the junction of Lee, Monroe and Phillips Counties stands a monument marking the initial point where engineers representing the United States began the survey November 10, 1815 to determine the boundaries of the territory embraced in the Louisiana Purchase. The events that determined this initial point, and the resulting surveys will be the subject of a program at the Tri-County Genealogy Society Sunday. The program will be presented by Bobby Turner when the Genealogical Society meets this next Sunday, August 12. The Society will meet in the genealogy library in Marvell at 2 p.m. All members, past and present, are urged to attend. Visitors are welcome.

I hope I am not out of line in posting this message, but feel that some of the subscribers with queries relative to the tri-county area (Phillips-Lee-Monroe Counties) are not aware of the Tri-County Genealogical Society located in Marvell, Arkansas. Our Society was chartered in 1985; currently has over 300 members worldwide; publishes three journals yearly containing queries from members and information from the tri-county area. We have a large genealogy library in Marvell, 18 miles west of Helena, that is open Sunday and Thursday afternoons, and is manned by a volunteer to help visitors with their research. We strive to work with members in their research. Those interested may e-mail me privately for a brochure, or for additional information. wridge@hnb.com

I'm looking for information on Mary Sylar who was the second child of Andrew L. Sylar and his first wife, Rebecca Amanda Rhodes. Rebecca died shortly after Mary was born. On the 1900 Lee county census, an Andrew Sylar, age 19, is living in the household of Harrison Roden and is his brother-in-law. Harrison's wife is named Mary and is the right age for Mary Sylar. Also in the household is Harrison's son, and a step-son named "Loveliss" who is only a year older. I'm wondering if Mary Sylar first married a Lovelace/Loveless, and then Harrison Roden. In 1936, when Richard L. Sylar died, his obituary mentions a surviving sister, Mary Fant. Anybody have some information? Thanks! - Heather

The subject of this sketch was born in Iredell County, N. C., in the year 1830. He attended the common schools of the neighborhood, and was graduated from Davidson College, a literary institution in Mecklenburg County, N. At the close of the war he came to Lee County, and resumed the practice of hi! s adopted calling at La Grange, where he has since resided, and built up a large practice. In 1868 the Doctor was married to Miss Eliza Burke, a daughter of Elisha and Eliza Burke, natives of North Carolina, and who came to Arkansas in 1840. [Other records are that they arrived about 1835.] Her father represented Phillips County for a number of years in the State legislature. Dr. Gibson and wife are the parents of five children: Belo, Estelle, Burke, Minnie and Willie. Dr. Gibson is a member of the Presbyterian Church. He also belongs to the Masonic fraternity, and is Worshipful Master of the lodge at La Grange. His wife is a member of the Baptist Church.
