    1. [ARLEE] Divorcees
    2. Steven Dhuey
    3. I am trying to determine if a Marianna resident was a widow or a divorcee, based on indirect evidence (having just about exhausted my search for direct evidence!). She was referred to in the Marianna newspaper in the 1910s and 1920s as "Mrs. Annie Burgess", while other married or widowed women, such as her own mother, were almost always referred to by their husbands' name, e.g., Mrs. John Smith. In general, in that era, I know it was customary to refer to a widow as Mrs. John Smith, and a divorcee as Mrs. Jane Smith. But was that custom for referring to divorcees followed by the Marianna newspapers of that era? Steve

    3. I grew up near Marianna too, The Flowers family owned this old house and funeral home long before Norris and his then wife Anne moved in. Norris' father was a doctor but to my knowledge he never lived in the old house. I think the house was built in that style to accommodate the business AND living quarters for the Flowers family . There were two generations of Flowers into the business before Norris bought it in the early sixties after "Doc" Flowers died suddenly. ----- Original Message ----- From: <sansing38901@aol.com> To: <ARLEE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 7:48 PM Subject: [ARLEE] Re: tommy moon > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jV.2ADE/35.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > i grew up in marianna and heard about tommy moon, but never saw him. i was wondering what style of architecture that old funeral home is. i have never seen a building shaped like it, the way it bows out and curves in the front and then has a roof that looks like a witch's hat . if it was dr. hodge 's home then his son's funeral home , maybe norris knows the history of the building. > > > ============================== > Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! > http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2 > >

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Sylar, Fant, Lovelace, Lovelis, Loveless, Roden, Blair, Rhodes Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jV.2ADE/21.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Gosh, we might be connected. Here's the story: Mary Sylar Fant was the daughter of my great-great grandfather, Andrew Lafayette Sylar (1833 - 1887) and his first wife, Rebecca Amanda Rhodes (1840 - 1863). Rebecca died just 3 days after Mary was born. It was in the middle of the Civil War, and Andrew came home on leave from the CSA for Rebecca's funeral and most likely to see about his family. He overstayed his leave and when he returned to his unit, he was busted down to private. Andrew was later taken prisoner by the Union forces at the battle of Helena on July 4, 1863. He stayed in the prison at Alton, Illinois until the end of the war. I've been trying to find out more about Mary, since I know very little. I found her on the 1900 census for Lee county, married to Harrison Roden. They have been married 21 years. She has had 4 children, but only one is living. I can't tell just from that record whether this child is Tom Lovelace/Loveless, who is the step-son of Harrison Roden, or Robert Eli Roden. Maybe they are both her children, but then again, maybe not. So Mary might have been married to a Lovelace/Loveless/Lovelis before marrying Harrison Roden. She married a Fant at some time, because that is the name she had at the death of her half-brother, Richard Sylar. So I know almost nothing about the Fant family, but have ordered Mary's death certificate and will certainly let you know what I find out. I will try to find her obit the next time I'm at the University of Arkansas library. As for my Blair family, they were in North-central Arkansas (Searcy County) from before 1850, and nowhere near Lee County, so we might only be connected via the mysterious Fants. I have a Sylar family tree posted on rootsweb at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~sylarfamily/ Thanks for replying! - Heather
