i'll add my two cents. i was there two years ago, looking for the same book. Book "F" has apparently vanished, even tho A,B,C,D,E,G,H, etc, are, (or were then), there, albeit out of order. No one seemed concerned, and i was asked several times by (paid) employees of this courthouse, what an "indigent soldier" might be, and what war this list might be referring to. i'm sure my disgust and frustration were apparent. i was almost in tears. my 16 year old daughter and i spent the rest of the afternoon searching--they seemed happy to stay out of our way, since my request for the missing book had taken them away from the computer games which were evident at every terminal. the next day the curator of a nearby museum (and VERY dear, helpful, lovely lady), just shook her head when i told her of my experience--seems the ineptitude at that particular courthouse is common knowledge. and Book "F" has been missing for quite some time.. hope i didn't offend anybody, but i've been to a LOT of courthouses, and this one is certainly a lesson in the "Zen of Genealogy". carrie --- Carol Thompson <twister@pokynet.com> wrote: > > In God We Trust > > One of the most difficult county clerk's office > I've ever been in for > getting copies, etc. Just have to push a little > harder. > C.T. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Nancy Matthews" > <nlmatthews@ritternet.com> > To: <ARLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, March 24, 2003 7:04 AM > Subject: Re: [ARLAWREN] LOOKUP/Families of > Confederate Soldiers in Lawrence > Co. > > > > It's there. The folks at Powhatan Courthouse, which is the museum, are so very helpful. I spent a day there a couple of years ago and they just went out of their way to help me find materials - especially the lady who is a trained genealogist.
