An old grudge had long existed between two old citizens, viz: John Morgan and Thomas Gibbons, both living near Rome. Some time in the year 1848 they met at Rome. The old grudge was brought up and Morgan threw an ax at Gibbons, inflicting a mortal wound, from which Gibbons died in a few hours. Morgan made his escape into Texas where he was followed and arrested shortly afterwards and brought to Arkadelphia to await his trial. The jury returned a verdict of acquittal and the prisoner was discharged. I hope this information will help. I would appreciate any help tracing my JOHN H. 3. Could someone verify a cemetery look-up for Townsend Cemetery, Lawrence Co, Arkansas? I'm trying to find out more on this family and verify dates. I found a listing on the net for: TOWNSEND, Hiram Wesley b. 1861: d. 1930--husband of Anne E TOWNSEND. TOWNSEND, Anne, E b. 1841; d 1919. Listed as wife of Hiram Wesley TOWNSEND . TOWNSEND, Launa Lucille, b. 14 June 1888; d. 8 Sept 1888. Daughter of A.W. and H.E. My question: I know the dates could be correct, but wife Anne is b 1841 & Hiram 1861. Anne's 20 yrs older & would have been abt 47 when daughter was born in 1888. Just wondering if someone can verify dates or know of any way to check obits for these Townsends. I think they may be from my line. Thanks for any help! Kathy

    3. Kathy, it is Strawberry Township. Also, could the transcriber have made a mistake regarding the printer/physician question? This is not much but there were Townsends in Oregon Co., MO in the 1940s and 50's. I don't know how long the family had been there. Oregon County is not far from Lawrence and Sharp. There were also McGhee's there in the same time period and they may still be there. 3. Sometimes I wish recordkeepers had all been issued typewriters. I am trying to learn more about William Cates, who was issued a license in Lawrence County to marry Francis Long, who was a widow. However, in the 1880 Census his name is transcribed as Cater and the two Long children whom Francis had had (Nancy M. and Mary J.) are also indicated with the Cater surname. In 1880, the family also included: A. CATER, Elijah, born about 1868 B. CATER, Alice, born about 1870 C. CATER, Laura, born about 1872 D. CATER, Cora, born about 1879 In Lawrence Co. Marriages are: Cater, Laura (18) m. Nipps, C.A. (28) 7/15/1896 (thus this Laura b about 1878) -- Was whe understating her age or is this a different Laura Cater? Cater, William T. (20) m. Clay, Minta B. (17) 11/10/1901 (This William born about 1881 -- Is he another of William and Franky's children?)
