Hello, I am Regina Creekmore Weaver, and most of my mother's families are from the southwestern area of Lawrence County and just over the line into Sharp County. I apologize to any that may get this message twice, as I'm sending it to both lists... I have considerable information on the DUKES, WARE and MILLIGAN families, and am willing to share anything I have on the families of Major DUKE(S) (settled in Lawrence County before 1850); Samuel and Joseph WARE (settled in Lawrence County around 1814); and the Rev. John MILLIGAN that resided at Reed's Creek, starting somewhere around 1818. The other families that I am searching include: James Knox SIMPSON, supposedly born to James SIMPSON and <unknown> Dec 1850, m. Lydia Elizabeth SOFLEY, daughter of Dr. Enoch SOFLEY and Melissa A. MILLIGAN . John E. SMITH, son of William H.(?) SMITH and Missouri DUKE(S), born abt 1844 in Lawrence County, Arkansas, m. Sarah Ann SULLIVAN, daughter of Littleton Berry SULLIVAN and Celia LEE, b. abt. 1844 in Tennessee. Any info on the above would be helpful, I'm sure, as I have very little on these folks. I descend through John and Sarah's son L.B. (Little Bee) SMITH. James Lafayette SPARKS, son of John SPARKS and Sarah BOWLEN, b. abt. 1845, married Malinda Ann WARE, daughter of Charles WARE and Susan Maranda BANDY, b. 11 Dec. 1855 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. I know very little on the SPARKS side other than James' father seems to have come from Alabama and his mother from North Carolina. Any info here would be helpful. Phillip Addison HOWARD, son of Cornelius HOWARD, born abt. 1853, married Martha Jane TAYLOR, daughter of James and Sarah TAYLOR, born abt. 1858. They had three girls and a boy before Phillip died at the age of 34, and Martha Jane married again to William Albert WALLIS. I am descended through Artie Belle HOWARD, b. 1883, one of the daughters of Phillip and Martha Jane. I would love to know more about both the HOWARD and the TAYLOR families here. Have a great rest of the weekend...and may you find many connections in this roll call!! : ) Regina Regina Creekmore Weaver weave@ipa.net President, Batesville Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~arwhite/BITBARK.html
Does anyone have any information on Leah Sharp Harris and any Coggins that were in Lawrence County around 1850 on. Any information will greatly appreciated. Bob Morrison

Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fullers Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the archived messages of this list or any other Rootsweb mailing list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is, when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents when they send their unhappiness to the entire list. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Bill, Have you ever contacted JoAnn Ware Spore on the Ware/Weir families. I come from the Weir line, and some where along the way, some of them changed it to Ware. She has the largest data base that I know of on this line. Marilyn > I am looking for information on the parents of Samuel and his wife Sallie > Charles. Davenport RICE was probably born in Buckingham Co. Va. He owned land there and in Fluvanna Co.Va. He married Ann Moody SHORES , daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth SHORES.In the War of 1812, Thomas, his son, was named in his pension record. The Davenport RICE estate heirs were listed in the 1820 Federal Census. Does anyone have any records related to the RICE and SHORES families in Arkansas?. Thank you.
Thanks for your help in making discoveries about this line. LAWRENCE, Jesse Born in North Carolina on 11 September 1825. Farmer in Alicia area. In 1877 he married. BRINSFIELD, Mrs. Margaret. I am assuming that she was a widower when they married since the farm next to the Lawrence farm was a Brinsfield family farm. Her information indicates that she was born in 1845 in Arkansas, but her parents were from Georgia. I have no burial information on Margaret, but Jesse is buried in Haynes Cemetery in the Swifton area.

Stories: (JOHN HARVEY DAVIS) John's mother died in Kentucky (?) and when he was age 4, his father brought him to Arkansas to live with an aunt. There is a story about John and an uncle_________Rachel and black man crossing a river in a row boat. His uncle was quite drunk and he decided that the black man was not rowing fast enough. He drew his knife, intending to cut the rower's throat. John hit his uncle so hard he knocked him out of the boat. His uncle apparently caught a "chill" -but however that might have been- he was "layed up" from 4 to 6 weeks, and thought he was going to die. (He did recover). John's wife (Martha Ann) was the first one in the family to join the RE-ORGANIZED CHURCH of JESUS CHRIST of LATTER DAY SAINTS, due to the influence of Hannah Bowers, who was the first member (Convert) in the community. They were previously Methodists. Her obituary has her birthday as 1849. She died at her old home-stead (Emeriar's home at time) from a stroke. They had lived for a time in Woodruff Co. before coming to Hardy, Ark. She is reported to have joined the R.L.D.S. Church in 1892 and remained faithful til death. One of the brothers stayed in St. Louis, one went west and wasn't heard from again. The third, went to S.E. Missouri and married an Indian woman. They lived among the Indians. Their son(?) was a medicine man who went to Texas with Sam Houston's army and later relocated in Doniphan, Mo. It is said that Denzil owned and operated a grocery store at a place in Missouri called "The Mines." He and Gertrude were genreous and hospitable people, especially to their neighbors and aquaintances who had less than they. Denzil (Dan as he was called) was a good cook and once in a while took over the chore of cooking. Gertrude nursed sick neighbors. She did laundry for pay to purchase Christmas gifts for needy children in the neighborhood. They conducted Sunday School in their home and those that came would stay for dinner. On vacations they would go camping "up the Spring River" Nevada Gertrude Baxter Madden died 1-26-1919 and buried in the old cemetary at Hardy, Ark. Denzil Madden was a pumper for the Frisco Railroad possibly in Thayer, Mo., Hardy, Williford and Hoxie, Ark. He retired from the Railroad 7-7-1938. He was also a deputy sheriff for a time around 1910. Denzil and his son Philemon built some of the individual rental cabins which were built in a hexagonal shape and called Teepees at the Wahpeton Inn, located on Hardy's highest hill and overlooked Spring River and the town. abt. 1939. The old Madden home in Hardy Arkansas was built by Denzil and Philemon in the early 1900's. Denzil married AMANDA KATHERINE DAVIS WILLIAMS around 1920 and the family lived in Williford, Arkansas about 1925. They lived in Hardy a few years prior to moving to Williford. They also lived in Mammoth Spring and Hoxie while he worked for the railroad. Philemon, his son, retired with his wife Alma in an Ozark cabin between Mammoth Spring and Hardy. Christi

I descend from William JANES b. ca. 1785 and d. 1846 in Clark Co. AR. He migrated to Ste. Genevieve, MO, Bellevue Settlement, around the time of the Louisiana Purchase and is found in Private Land Claim records. His land abutted John JANES, Jr, Jarred JANES and Joseph McMURTREY. The other JANES names, along with my William are traced to Lawrence County, AR s early as 1817 from a deed directly linking the eldest John JANES to property in Ste. Genevieve, MO. William was a JP in the Union Twn. beginning in 1818 and continuing for a number of years. I believe his siblings to be John (who remained in Lawrence/Randolph Counties), Jarret (who eventully migrated to Hempstead County and then Texas), Joseph (moved along with Jarret), Massask (moved along with Jarret and Joseph), Samuel (remained in Lawrence/Randolph Counties), George W. (married Catherine Russell and moved to Hot Springs and Ouachita Counties), and Elizabeth Jane (who married William Black a prominent lawyer). My William JANES removed to Clark County ca. 1825 where he was also a judge. Among other names found to have migrated at this time from Lawrence County were Janes SLOAN and Joseph HARDIN, Jr. I believe Williams wife, Jane, could have been a daughter of Joseph HARDIN but have found no proof. William remained in Clark County until his death in 1846. Linda Rogers Mesquite, TX ********************************* duggie2.home.attbi.com

The only marriages I can find for M.A. Gilbert is one to Susie C. Moore on the 10th of August 1876, recorded in book E page 126 of the Lawrence Co., AR marriage records. There is another M.A. Gilbert marriage listed in Sharp County to Alice Morgan. He was 38 and she was 22 and the marriage took place on 11 July 1890 and is recorded in book E, page 336. I have no idea if either of these are your Gilbert. Just passing along information in case it is useful to you. I did check the Randolph Co., marriage records for you and didn't find your M.A. Gilbert. Hope this helps. Dale H.
