    1. [ARLAWREN] World War I
    2. Dale H. McMasters
    3. Forwarded FYI - The Library of Congress' Serial & Government Publications Division is pleased to announce the release of a new addition to the National Digital Library - the online collection The Stars and Stripes: The American Soldiers' Newspaper of World War I, 1918-1919, available on the American Memory website at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/sgphtml/sashtml/. At the direction of General John J. Pershing, The Stars and Stripes newspaper was published in France by the United States Army from February 8, 1918 to June 13, 1919. By early 1918, American forces were dispersed throughout the western front, often mixed at the unit level with British, French and Italian forces. The primary mission of The Stars and Stripes was to provide these scattered troops with a sense of unity and an understanding of their part in the overall war effort. The eight-page weekly featured news from home, poetry, cartoons and sports news, with a staff that included journalists Alexander Woollcott, Harold Wallace Ross and Grantland Rice. On borrowed printing presses, using a delivery network that combined trains, automobiles (including three Cadillacs) and one motorcycle, the staff produced a newspaper with a circulation that peaked at 526,000 copies. This new online collection presents the complete run - 71 weeks - of the World War I edition. The collection also includes special presentations that discuss the newspaper's content: its illustrations and advertising, its publication of soldiers' poetry, its coverage of women. Brief biographies of editorial staff members and their later careers hint at the level of journalistic talent within The Stars and Stripes. A timeline and map place the newspaper within the greater historical and geographical context of the war. The collection was processed with optical character recognition (OCR) software to allow users to search the full text of the newspaper for a word or phrase. This feature expands the collection's usefulness to historians and genealogists researching names and details that do not appear in the headlines. The Stars and Stripes collection served as a pilot project in the development of search and display capabilities to be utilized on future releases of historic newspapers. 2. Glenna, It is interesting that our research into John Norman crosses trails again, John Norman owned a parcel of land/ 200 acres 3 1/2 miles north of Cave City Arkansas, Section 32- T16N R5W--- Where did you come up with Piney Ford? Cave City is on the Arkansas Map. The Strawberry River also comes into play with John Norman's Property, Have you ever come across any information on John's Son Richard Lou Norman, specifically where he is buried. Cus Fred

    3. Could you be thinking of Piney Fork. It was a political township in Lawrence County in 1850. It's been in Sharp County since it was formed in 1868. Piney Fork Township is located around Evening Shade which, I believe, was the origional county seat of Sharp Co. I found some early land records in the 1850's in the area of Norman's. (A John in 1896 and an Issac in 1856. I also found a John Norman in Pope County in 1860. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glenda" <ken-womack@worldnet.att.net> To: <ARLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 07, 2003 7:27 PM Subject: [ARLAWREN] Piney Ford > Can anyone give me info on town called Piney Ford. 3. Hello I have been searching the Lawrence County websight. I came across a possible connection to Maudie (TATUM)ROGERS -SPRADLIN. Looking through the cemetery lists I found : Adrian J. ROGERS b.no date d.1 Jan.2001 age 80 husband of Shirley Mcknight ROGERS and son of James"Punch"and Laura (TATUM) ROGERS father of Charlotte,Sherry,Douglas, and Terry Burial in Stranger's Home Cemetery ssdi has Adrian J. Rogers b.8 Feb. 1920 d.1 Jan.2001 Hoxie,AR. This past 4th of July weekend, we had our 25th family reunion. Talking with an aunt and cousin they confirmed that this Laura or Laurie(Tatum) ROGERS is in fact Maudie's sister., and to their knowledge, her only sibling. I would like to have a marriage date for James"Punch" and Laura(Tatum) ROGERS with book# and record # ,so I can send for the record. Marriage was before 1920. The cemetery list has a Laura Ethel ROGERS b. 9 May 1894 d.10 dec. 1989 Strangers Home Cemetery. I am not sure if this is the Laura I am looking for but, her birthdate is close to Maudie's (1898) ,so it is possible. Seems odd that I can't find burial dates for James ROGERS or his brother Earl ROGERS d. bef.1920;1st husband of Maudie. Thanks for your time and assistance. Thank-you ,Tina
