    3. Dear List Members, I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of those working in the courthouses. I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year. 1. [ARLAWREN] TATUM/ROGERS
    2. Marion REED
    3. Hello Listers, I joined your list in June. I have posted a few times and I have had a lot of help from this list. Thank you! I was searching for a marriage record for James"Punch" and Laura (Tatum) ROGERS. No luck in finding them in Lawrence County ,AR. I did find them over the county line in Jackson County,AR. James ROGERS 20 Alicia Lanna TATUM 18 Alicia ( name transcribed wrong)? married: 16 Aug.1912 Laura's sister Maudie TATUM married Earle D. ROGERS in Lawrence County 27 Nov.1914 the marriage record also included a note from Maudie's mother Mary TATUM giving permission for her to marry. With that done I went back to check the 1920 census. Maudie, widowed, is living with her inlaws, the ROGERS family Sol and Bell. I couldn't find James and Laura ROGERS listed in the 1920 index. I tried the wildcard search ROG* and finally found them. Their name was transcribed as ROGERO.,living in Marion twp. Rogero, James head 26 Lura wife 23 Roy son 6 Kenneth son 3 KELLY,Mary mo-in-law 45 wd. the name Mary KELLY through me off. Is this her maiden name(one could only hope) or did she remarry and was widowed again? 1930 census still in Marion twp. ROGERS,James 38 Laura E. 35 Roy L. 16 Adrian J. 10 Hilda 5 James J. 10 mo. TATUM,Mary 53 mo-in-law wd. son Kenneth b. 5 Aug.1914 d.16 Dec.1921 buried in the Arnold Cem. Jackson County AR. Mary TATUM b.abt.1875 d.1952 burial in the Arnold Cem. Jackson Co. AR. It's most likely Mary died in or near Alicia. Are there funeral home records available at the library or the Lawrence County Genealogy Society? I am also interested in an obit for her but, I don't have an exact death date. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time and assistance. Tina

    1. [ARLAWREN] C.R. man arrested in Internet genealogy scam
    2. lanita miller
    3. From this morning's Cedar Rapids Gazette: (Aug 1, 2003) ------------------------------------------------------------ C.R. man arrested in Internet genealogy scam By Christoph Trappe The Gazette Friday, August 01, 2003, 10:01:40 PM CEDAR RAPIDS -- Local investigators say they have cracked a genealogy Internet scam that spread across the nation and overseas. Police on Friday arrested Elias Abodeely II, 22, of 340 Owen St. NW, on suspicion of identity theft and three felonies -- first-degree theft, money laundering and ongoing criminal conduct. The crimes are punishable by up to 47 years in prison. Investigators claim Abodeely masterminded a 3-year genealogy scam that netted at least $14,000 and between 220 and 260 victims -- a handful of them from overseas. The total could be higher, but investigators haven't added up everything yet, said Cedar Rapids police investigator Greg Koenighain. Many visitors to Abodeely's genealogy Web sites signed up for what they thought was a five-day trial period, with the option of canceling after that time was up. They supplied financial information but found they were unable to cancel memberships and that money was taken out of their accounts or that their checks were cashed, police charged. "I got onto the site and all it does is bounce me into free sites I could get into without paying," said Glenn Oden, 59, of Graham, Wash., who said he lost almost $100 by signing up at the genealogy site. "I'm looking for the cancellation logo and there's none -- not anywhere inside the site. A few days go by and, guess what, he cashes the (online) check." At other sites, the cancellation button didn't work, Koenighain said. Then, one day in April, Oden said, his electronic check number was turned around and the check was cashed again. The identity theft charge stems from an accusation that Abodeely stole four women's Social Security numbers and used the numbers to establish accounts he used to process credit cards. "His associates solicited people for employment in data processing," Koenighain said. "The women gave them this info. They don't even know Abodeely." The Iowa Attorney's General Office received 84 complaints about Web sites linked to Abodeely dating back to 2000, said Bill Brauch, director of the office's Consumer Protection Division. Abodeely was booked and released from the Linn County Jail on Friday afternoon. Two more arrests are pending, Koenighain said. At least one of Abodeely's Web sites -- genseekers.com -- was still operating Friday, but officials were shutting it down, Koenighain said. Dick Eastman of Northborough, Mass., who publishes the Eastman Online Genealogy Newsletter to about 20,000 subscribers, said he received about 100 complaints about Abodeely's Web sites. "It's a clever little scam. He's very subtle," he said. "He says (he has) access to millions (of records), and one e-mail even said he has access to billions of records." ************************************************ Several people asked, so I thought I would post this follow-up message to everyone: Yes, please feel free to re-post this information elsewhere as you see fit. This article is NOT restricted to Plus Edition subscribers only. However, I would appreciate your attributing the information to Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter at http://www.eogn.com. Thank you. - Dick Eastman Thought you all needed to see this! Lanita

    2. Nancy Matthews
    3. Judy, Hopefully a probate record will include documents such as the will that contain the names of the spouse and the names of the children. In a lot of cases, if the daughter is married, it will include her married name. If the deceased owned land, there should be a legal description of that land. There might be an inventory of the personal property and how it is distributed. It can help identify additional family members or an occupation. It can help pinpoint the death date of an individual. I highly recommend having a look at the probate books. 3. I to have seen this advertisement and ignored it. What I find "errie" is that I am from Lawrence Co Ar and live and work in Iowa City which is only 25 or less miles from Cedar Rapids, Ia. I work in the Post Office in Iowa City. Small world. I would not be surprised if I have actually "seen" this nasty man. Very, very good work, girl, thank you so very much for the time and effort you have spent to protect us.
