    1. [ARLAWREN] Update on Dale
    2. Dale H. McMasters
    3. Hi you are again receiving this email because you are on Dale's address book. I am her youngest son Kent. The Kidney specialist was in this morning. He thinks that dehydration due to nausea and diarrhea is probably the cause of the kidneys shutting down. He said that after receiving IV fluids all night that her blood tests this morning were showing improvement in the kidney functions. He also believes that rehydrating her and treating for a kidney infection will probably be all it will take. I will keep everyone updated as I get more information. Again please keep Dale on your prayer lists. Thanks KENT

    1. Re: [ARLAWREN] local research help needed
    2. Nancy, Here are my suggestions. Since your question is one that others also might like to be more informed about, I am sending to the list and hope others do too. Pre-trip -- get as much done before you go to identify what you need to check and find out. Why take time on your visit to learn what you could have learned from the Internet or at your home town library? Here are some suggestions: Check census records on line and at libraries -- maybe even just go thru ones for areas where a lot of your relatives lived in order to get a better feel for the neighborhoods. Check rootsweb for World Connect and Social Security materials. Check the LDS family search materials. Do surname searches at Nancy Matthews' site including of families into which your family married (Lawrence Co.) Do similar searches on Randolph Co. genweb site. Check the one for Lawrence Co. and Bill Couch's as well. There are a lot of materials on Betty Tucker's cemetery site and she also has listed marriages for Randolph Co. (then when you get there you can go armed with a list, preferably in chronological order, to check over at the courthouse to look at the actual marriage and death records -- taking note of participants in wedding and other info on that cert. as well as informats, causes of death, where lived, buried, funeral home, etc.) Unfortunately Betty's site does not have the capability of a full surname search so you have to check a lot of individual records by cemetery and surname. When there: Visit your relatives, ask questions and listen. Go to courthouses and check vital and records, probates, and land records. Go to Powhatan Courthouse museum and check records and talk with Evelyn. Check otherwise unavalable materials at the libraries. Be sure to ask questions of the librarians. Many can give a LOT of information and save you considerable time. Call funeral homes and see whether you can look at old records there -- Mc Nabbs is one that does let you. Visit cemeteries where you know of family burials -- pay attention to those buried there as sometimes you learn of connections just by seeing who is buried on the family plot. I am not sure whether the newspapers allow public access for research. Some also have provided materials for libraries. There also are some very good books with abstracts which usually are one you otherwise wouldn't be able to access. Visit and talk some more with family. Have a great trip! 1. [ARLAWREN] Useful resources
    2. Dale H. McMasters
    3. I had not realized that everybody did not have a multiple year calendar or an easy way to figure birth or death dates until I saw the recent exchange of information on another list and the surprise of some folks that such things were available. With that in mind, I'd like to share a few resources I have found that others might find helpful, if you haven't already found them: ---For D.A.R. lineages already published: http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search/3174.htm ---Inflation conversion factors from ca. 1800 - ca 2010: http://www.orst.edu/dept/pol_sci/fac/sahr/sahr.htm ---Terms for occupations: http://www.onthenet.com.au/~tonylang/occupa.html ---Terms for diseases: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/disease.htm ---Maps for finding cities, cemeteries, etc. today: http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html ---Timelines, for placing your ancestors, or yourself, in the context of history: http://www.ourtimelines.com/ ---Ellis Island Historical Center: http://www.ellisisland.org/history.html ---Notable Women ancestors: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nwa/ ---Nationwide index of vital statistics: http://www.vitalrec.com/index.html ---Naturalization Records Information: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/natural.html ---Genealogy frauds and scams: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm ---In my opinion, the best/largest/most comprehensive FREE genealogical resource on the Internet: http://www.rootsweb.com/ I hope you will all find these resources as useful as I have. 3. Everybody... please take a minute and go to: http://news.ozarksnow.com/genealogy/index.html and take a peek at the genealogy column. This is in the Springfield, MO paper. There's a place where you can place your query too... She is looking for some big hits from us to help her prove to the paper that there are many of us out here and that this column is needed and read....both online and in the actual paper. Yes, that's my query... and for the record, I provided all the info to her, except what was found in a Dade Co. book...but that doesn't matter to me... as long as the word is spread far and wide.. Let's help her prove that this type of column, both online and in the paper, is needed!! Thanks for your help, Lanita

    1. [ARLAWREN] Snow, Henry Thomas or Thomas Henry
    2. I have some questions integrated with quotes from my notes about Henry Thomas Snow's family: A bit of confusion has been caused by both Henry Thomas Snows to also be known as Thomas or to have their first and middle names reversed as was shown in the Times Dispatch -- 45 years ago in Jan 26, 1994 issue: "Thomas Henry Snow 73 (1875-1949), died at his home in Sedgwick. He was a retired farmer." This Thomas Henry's given name probably earlier had been Henry Thomas Snow, Jr. Henry Thomas SNOW, Jr., (1875, AL-1949, AR) had been married to Ellie Haines (26 Nov 1886-8 Mar 1949) by the time of the 1910 Census. Henry Thomas Jr. and Ellie both are buried in Snow Cemetery. This probably was not his first wife. He probably was the eldest child of Henry Thomas and Laura E. (HENDERSON) SNOW. The latter Henry Thomas SNOW (1835 AL - 1910, ?) was born in Oxford, AL, son of Fielding and Mary Garland (MOUNGER) SNOW. Mary had in 1827 been married to George PICKEL who I presume had died before her second marriage in 1832. *Fielding was a son of Thomas Snow and a brother of Steve's ancestor William T. Snow. (Does anyone know when this Henry Thomas Snow died and/or where he was buried?( (Does anyone know birth and death dates and places for George Pickel?) Henry Thomas married Laura E. HENDERSON. In the Snow Cem is a grave for Snow, Laura E, (20 Oct 1849-18 Aug 1886), wife of H T, as Henry Thomas had moved from AL to Walnut Ridge, AR. Henry Thomas and Laura had several children. (Nancy Matthews indicates dod as 1888. Could anyone double-check the date by a look-up in the AR death index?) I am looking for further information about Laura's descendents: 1. Thomas Henry SNOW, Jr., (1875, AL-1949, AR) 2. Fielding SNOW 3. Charles Colvert SNOW 4. Bowen SNOW 5. Kate SNOW On 29 Jan. 1899, the widower Henry Thomas SNOW (age 63) married Ibbie Mahala WILLIS (1840 - 1911) (age 57), widow of IM Cooper and divorced from John McCarroll. I am looking for others researching this family as well as answers to questions in () above.

    1. [ARLAWREN] Social Security Application Copy Price Increase
    2. This, from another list, might help cut down the number of applications one might need. Fellow listers, Here’s an appeal to all of you to pull out the copies of the SSAN application forms you already have filed away in your "stuff" and post them at Rootsweb. I just did it for the ones I have and it’s really easy. :O) 1. Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/ 2. Scroll down the home page to Social Security Death Index and click on it. 3. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search engine. 4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add Post-Em" link. 5. The "Fill in the blank" form will come up and you can type in the information just like it’s printed on the form you have in your hands! 6. Include all the information in the order that it is entered on the form, so that others have the advantage of all that information. NOTE: You don’t have to type in the SS Number for the person as the Rootsweb program includes it. Since the cost of these forms will be increasing substantially next week, it would be good if EVERYONE put out the information they already have. Then whoever else is searching for that same person won’t be required to pay the new price for the same form you have in your files. And vice-versa! If we all "plant seed," we’ll all get the crop! And thank Goodness for Rootsweb providing this service to all of us for FREE!
