Hi Fran, The source is me. I taught Native American Indian Education for five years, and I'm Cherokee. Canoe people means that they use canoes. The Wappapello were famous for their canoes. Other tribes would trade and barter for their canoes. Expert canoe builders. Some tribes are known as basket makers, some as beadworkers, some as totem builders. It's just a loose term I guess. I'll bet that if you typed Wappapello into google you could come up with something. I'm not really sure what ever happened to the tribe after they were "removed" from their land. Hi again BJ: Google searches produce a great deal of information on Lake Wappapello, but so far I have found nothing on the folks who lived there. Perhaps I will read some of the far-down-the-hits-information and see if I find anything. Thanks so much for all the help you have been. I will view each of the sites for which you have sent urls. Thomas A. PAXTON had a daughter, Ida May, who married, first, Edward BARRETT. This occurred in New Madrid Co., MO. We have been unable to discover whether Ida May and Edward divorced or whether Edward died or whether he abandoned her and their two children. At any rate in the Crittenden Co., AR census of 1900, Ida May Paxton Barrett is now married to John W. POWELL and their race is Black, per the census taker. The couple were in Poinsett Co., AR census of 1910 and again they are listed racially as Black. Family legend tells that the folks were Wappapello. Believe me, I don't think someone dreamed up such a name, but so far two years of research have produced nothing on either Native or Black ancestry. Ida May's mother was Elizabeth COFLAN. She claimed AL as her home state so for one year I have been reviewing some AL Native records and, again, have found nothing on the Wappapello. Nor have I found anything on any of the Native rolls found at NARA. A family history of the PAXTON lineage has been done taking us back to KY about the late 1700's. So far, not even a hint of Native ancestry. I have written to Osage, Shawnee, and some Cherokee folks seeking information, not on the family, but on the Wappapello People, and again have found nothing until I posed the question to this and the MO lists. One kind researcher told me to search out the Pamunkey People of VA as the Wappapello were associated with them. So, with that, and all you have provided, maybe something will turn up, enabling me to further check the folks' ancestry. I so appreciate your time and help. We are descended from Hilibi Creek. As far as I know our People were not known as anything except rogue warriors in ancient days. Walk in peace.
