    3. Hello, First let me compliment you on producing a wonderful site. What a great resource. I am searching for Capt Uriah J Dowthitt/Dowthet/Douthit who was born in NC, but removed to then Lawrence, now Sharp Co AR in 1859. He brought his 2nd wife Sarah Smith Dowthitt and received a land patent/grant for 320 acres in Dec 1859. I've been told he served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was the Chairman of the Freedman's Bureau after the war was over....also that he was murdered Dec 28, 1867. I've also been told that his widow, Sarah settled his estate in Little Rock (rather than Piney Fork Township) and moved back to NC by the 1880 Census. I would like to know where to look to verify the information about his Civil War record. I found an on-line index card at ancestry.com where his widow had applied for a pension in NC and would like to follow up on that as well. I would also like to know if Uriah left a will ...would it be in Little Rock ? I would also like to find where he's buried. he doesn't appear to be in any of the cemetery books. I would appreciate any pointers......thanks, ~malinda Jeri Helms Fultz wrote: > Good evening, > > We have just uploaded a new and improved unit on the Civil War page, > 5TH ARKANSAS INFANTRY REGIMENT. 3. Hi, I found the Dowthett family on the 1860 Lawrence Co. Census, Piney Fork Twsp. Here is a link to the Freedmans website. There was no will probated in Lawrence Co. for him. I will send this on to Edward G. Gerdes and Bryan Howerton and perhaps they can help you out. http://freedmensbureau.com/ His military record can be sent for from the Arkansas History Commission, if he served in Arkansas, when you find the unit and company that he served in. His pension record will have to come from the National Archives since it was paid by the Federal Gov. These are the only Union soldiers listed as Douthit Dowthett etc. According to the 1860 census he was 49 yrs old, so he may have been rejected for service from that alone. Second Arkansas Union Cavalry DOUTHIT, JOHN DOUTHIT, RICHARD P. DOUTHIT, WOODEY Second Arkansas Union Infantry DOUTHIT, LEVI The is the email address to send for pension form85 you will need from the Nat. Archives. mailto:[email protected] If you find he did serve in AR, you can get his military records from the Ark History Commission by downloading and printing the form to do this. http://www.ark-ives.com/form3.txt Good luck!
