March 11, 1908 Van Buren Argus, Crawford County, Arkansas >From Wednesday’s Daily ASYLUM SCANDAL BREWING, ONE ARREST ORDERED Attorney Matlock returned home from Little Rock this morning after having attended the regular monthly meeting of the State Board of Charity. Mr. Matlock is taking the lead in investigating some very ugly charges that have been made against some of the attendants, and the public need not be surprised if a state of affairs is not developed in that institution that will cause an upheaval there before it is over. Hearing whispered reports of inhuman treatment of inmates of the asylum at the hands of the attendants and one to the effect that a patient had died from the effects of a beating given him with a heavy piece of garden hose, Mr. Matlock went to the institution and demanded to be shown a certain department and in it he found two leather straps and a heavy piece of garden hose through which a heavy cord had been run and so knotted as to leave a wrist loop on one end just as he was told he would find them. Before leaving Mr. Matlock caused a warrant to be issued for the arrest of an attendant named P M Bobo, and when he is placed upon trial it is believed tat an alarming state of affairs will be shown.
