    1. [ARKANSAS] March 21, 1906 Van Buren Argus
    2. Fran Warren
    3. Van Buren Argus Crawford County, Arkansas DEAD IN A TENT About 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon Mr. Dick Hennessey, living on Lee’s Creek, reached Van Buren in search of Sheriff Moore, to whom he reported the finding of a dead body of a man in a tent about a quarter of a mile below the Water Company’s pump station on Lee’s Creek. Justice J H Miller summoned a jury of 12 men, and loading them in covered vehicles drove out there, accompanied by Hunt & Ayers’ Undertaking wagon. Arriving at the tent they proceeded to investigate and quickly found that the dead man was David C Clark, aged 65 years, and that his death was due to natural causes, although it was developed that the dead man was addicted to the morphine habit and this it is thought was largely the cause of his death. It appears that the deceased with a married son and another family were occupying the small tent in which Clark died. The entire party were insufficiently clad, the smaller children, 3 or 4 in number, being barefooted and stood about an open fire shivering with cold, and those composing of the coroner’s jury stated that it was the worst case of destitution they had ever witnessed. The body was brought to Van Buren and take to Hunt and Ayers’s Undertaking rooms and later will be buried in the cemetery. 1. [ARKANSAS] Marriage & Death Records
    2. Alice
    3. Hello List, I am trying to find marriage and death records for the following people. I've searched every possible way I can with no luck, and am hoping that someone can help me. My great grandfather JAMES THOMAS VANDERGRIFT supposedly died in March of 1906 in Prairie County, I have been unable to find any records. (There are several variations of the surname, and he was known to have used the name Tom). He married Laura Ann Johnson (Dobbs) on Oct 24, 1887 in Prairie County. She was the widow of James W Johnson. CORDELE VANDERGRIFT married RUSSELL G WEDGE about 1911, I belive in Prairie or Monroe County. I can't seem to find a record of their marriage or a death date for Cordele. They had twins Russell (Clay) & Sarah who were living with their grandmother Laura Vandergrift in the 1930 census for Monroe County. EMMA VANDERGRIFF married F.M. DOOLEY sometime in 1909, I can't seem to find a marriage date for them. Emma died in 1914 and F.M. (Frank) died in 1916 both in Prairie County. Their children Joseph and Emma were living with their grandmother Laura Vandergrift in the 1920 census for Prairie County. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give me. Sincerely, Alice Leonard

    3. Van Buren Argus- Crawford County, Arkansas November 8, 1905 FOUND CONFEDERATE DEPOSIT SLIPS A few days ago S A Hinkle in looking over a lot of old papers left by his uncle, John Hinkle, deceased, found a number of deposit slips that looked good to him for they read as follows: Washington, Ark., 12-24-1864 This certifies that John Hinkle has deposited in this office nine hundred and ninety nine dollars of "old issue" treasury notes to be exchanged on his order for two-thirds of that sum in "new issue" notes under an act of Congress of 17th of February, 1864, when this office will be supplied with funds for this purpose on the surrender of this certificate. Signed Edward Cross. There were a number of these certificates for different sums dated all within a few days of that of the above, the amount shown being $19,750. The only trouble is that the certificates were signed by an officer of the treasury department of the Confederate States and the "old issue" notes deposited were Confederate money that the Hinkle Brothers has accumulated during the war, and after the collapse the "new issue" being of less value than the old they retained the deposit slips which remain mute witnesses of the financial loss the war caused this one family. 3. Hi Dolores, Would there be a Sanford McKinney buried there? He was hung for murder, so maybe he wouldn't be buried in a proper place, but I think they hung him in Ft. 1. [ARKANSAS] August 30, 1905 Van Buren Argus
    2. Fran Warren
    3. Were those days really the "good old days"?? Van Buren Argus, Crawford County, Arkansas: August 30, 1905 The "blind tiger" at Jonesboro was dynamited a few nights ago and the men who were accustomed to going there to quench their thirst know the place no more. It is the old story of officers refusing to do their duty and winking at the very laws they swore to enforce when they took the oath of office. The "blind tiger" was being run in a brick building in the business portion of the city. There is one advantage about the dynamite treatment of "blind tigers" and that is everyone learns very quickly that it is not longer doing business. 3. Hi Fran, We seem to be living duplicate lives! :-) I just had to have my WindowsME deleted since it was doing nutty things and then the computer guy saved my old files seperately and after he reinstalled WindowsME I lost a lot of things.... Unfortunately I had to reinstall all my programs My problems seem to be over, at least for now. Here is the webpage address for our Civil War pages: and our email addresses are also there if you need them. http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/ Jeri Helms Fultz ps - if you ever run into some Davis' in Van Buren, please let me know. My cousin Tom Helms is researching that line of our family. They came to Van Buren in the late 1840s & early 1850s from TN and NC. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fran Warren" <alverson@valuelinx.net> To: <ARKANSAS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 28, 2003 5:16 AM Subject: Re: [ARKANSAS] June 14, 1905 Van Buren Argus > By all means, please do! 3. Dear Fran, Would you mind if we put this cemetery online on the Civil War pages? Perhaps Edward G. Gerdes and Bryan R. Howerton could place these men in the units they served in. I'll ask them about that. Let me know. Jeri ______________________________________________________ "But I remain your affectinate cosin untill death." Thank you again GGrampa Davis for those words. 1. [ARKANSAS] Van Buren Press March 8, 1905

    3. March 8, 1905 THE BENTONVILLE HORROR The burning of the Benton County Jail at Bentonville Saturday morning in which J D Reaves and Henry Crew were burned to death was as deplorable an event as has been recorded in the State for many years. Reaves, one of the men burned to death and who was serving a jail sentence for petit larceny, would have been discharged 24 hours later. Reaves had always declared that he was innocent of the charge and three weeks ago when some of the prisoners broke jail he went out with them but the next morning he returned to the jail, declaring he would not run from a crime he never committed. The jail is practically fireproof, with a concrete floor and ceiling. The fire was started by ashes from a cigarette falling among some bedding. The burning bedclothes in the narrow cell ignited the clothing of the two men and filed the closed room with smoke and fumes which rendered the other inmates insensible, and who for a time were believed to be dead. The jailer lived a half mile from the jail, and by the time he reached there the fire had consumed the bedding. The building was not damaged.
