    3. August 1, 1906 Van Buren Argus OLDEST MAN IN ARKANSAS Grandfather Jake Crabtree, colored, of Lavaca, is in the city on his annual visit to his son-in-law, Jerry Norwood. He bears the distinction of being the oldest man in Western Arkansas or the Indian Territory and is now in his 106th year. His hair is as white as the cotton he has worked in for practically a century, yet he is active, has good eyesight, and with the exception of being slightly deaf does not appear to be more than 75 years old. He is a quarter blood Indian, and to this fact he attributes his long life and he believes the Lord will spare his life many years yet. He talking interestingly of his life and the many stirring incidents connected with it. His life has been largely spent in Arkansas and the Indian Territory, and he shows a wonderful memory, especially in matters of 80 or 90 years ago. He admits he always liked his toddy, and says that he has used tobacco for fully 100 years, but he is thinking seriously of giving up the habit, for about the close of the war of 1812 some one told him that tobacco was very injurious to one’s health, and that he has been thinking about that ever since, and is of the opinion that he ought to quit before the habit grows too strong for him. 1. [ARKANSAS] Re: need census look up "Story"
    2. DONALD LOCKE JR
    3. To everyone on the Locke, Lock and Arkansas email lists. I wish to thank you for all your help with the look up's. This is long but I think very worthy to read :) There was a very good reason I asked for help and I will share it with you now :) Happy ending but a great new begining ! I run what I believe to be the largest Locke family web site on the net. I have a guest book on that site and it has been up since like 1997. I try to read the guest book often. Recently a man signed my guest book but only left his name and email address, he didn't leave any message at all. " kind of hard to make connections if there is no message lol" I saw his name and knew it was a rarely used name in the Locke family. I check my family tree and saw a man with the same name and saw that my guy could have still been living, so I took a shot in the dark and emailed him thinking he could be a cousin of mine. Anyway he wasn't related to me but I took his little bit of information and looked up the 1930 and 1920 census records for his family. I emailed him my findings and was right on. This man had stated to me his Grand Father was Richard F. Locke and that he knew little about his family and his only known living family were his 2 sisters. I wanted to find more census records but the 1910 and 1900 census index's are not online that I am aware of , so I asked all 3 email lists for help with look up's but I didn't list any names, just asked for any Lock(e)'s. When that first look up query didn't provide the names I was looking for, I then popped a 2nd email to the same email lists and this time I named the Locke men I was searching for. I just got a email from one of the email list members and she too stated her Grand Father was Richard F. Locke! To make this a little shorter, she is the half 1st cousin to the man I had originally started helping. Apprently they met when small children but knew nothing about each other since. They are now in contact with each other. So my help and your all's help have put half 1st cousins back in touch with each other ! This is the part of research that is so rewarding to me. It doesn't happen often but I have put quite a few lost family members back in touch with each other over the years. I have just as much fun researching my family as much as I do researching other Lock(e) family's. I don't know who is shocked more, me or them when I finally find the connection lol. I hope Page and Aubrey have a happy new reunion, I know they have a lot to catch up on! ;) It was and will continue to be fun helping others and I always enjoy putting lost family back in touch with each other. Again thanks to everyone who helped with the look ups' ! :) Donald G. Locke Jr. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/lockeroots/home.html " To E or not to E, that is the question!" DGLjr P.S. Don't be shy! Post your names, someone out there can help!

    3. I would take it to the local coin collector in your town and get it appraised. I did that with some old money. It's free and they have books that they can compare it to to show you the value. It's too hard to learn to value old money like that because of grades and qualities and you would have to be an expert and have seen other samples to compare it to etc. Your local coin collector should be in the phone book. Appraisals for small items like that are usually free, but I'd ask first. bj Dana Gray <danagray@cox.net> wrote:One resource might be to do a search for similar items on ebay and see what things are selling for on there. -----Original Message----- From: Mhilton33@aol.com [mailto:Mhilton33@aol.com] Sent: Friday, July 11, 2003 10:54 AM To: ARKANSAS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ARKANSAS] Re:Confederate Money Good Morning: I have some Confederate money that I am going to sell and I wonder if you knew where I could get some prices or a book. 1. [ARKANSAS] Natural Disaster in April 1906
    2. Fran Warren
    3. It is so hard to imagine living almost one hundred years ago and learning of disater of this magnitude after almost a week has passed. Cable news has sure replaced an outdated mode of communication but the Associated Press is still a familiar name to us. Van Buren Argus Crawford County, Arkansas April 25, 1906 SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., DESTROYED BY EARTHQUAKE Indescribable Horror Prevails and the Loss of Life and Property Can Not be Approximated. Business Section Suffers Most. FIRE ADDS TO THE HORROR AND CONSUMES WRECKAGE. Water Supply Destroyed and Fireman Can Only Stand and Watch the Flames Consume Wrecked Buildings and Victims Buried Beneath the Ruins. >From Wednesday’s Daily The destruction wrought in San Francisco, Calif., at an early hour this morning will probably prove to be even a greater calamity that that befalling Galveston a few years ago, both in loss of life and destruction of property. Wherever telegraph or cable offices are maintained the news of the disaster is being discussed. Just how much of the city has been toppled into a heap of ruins; how many lives have been lost; how much property has been destroyed, has not yet been estimated, and it will be at least 24 hours before any definite idea of the destruction wrought can be formed. >From the meager reports sent out by the Associated Press, whose building at 302 Montgomery Street was destroyed, it appears that the greatest damage was done in the business section on the bay side of the city and that fire in the wrecked buildings added additional terror. The water mains were broken and the fire must necessarily burn itself out. The streets are choked with debris and the work of rescuing those buried in the collapsed buildings much be necessarily slow. San Francisco, Calif., April 18, 6 a m- The business section of this city was destroyed by an earthquake at 5:15 this morning, the shock being continuous for full 3 minutes. At this moment it is impossible to tell what the loss of life will be, but it is very great and it is feared that it is something tremendous. San Francisco, Calif., April 18, 8 a m- This city has been practically wiped out by an earthquake. Excitement is indescribable. Water works wrecked and fire has broken out in every portion of the wrecked sections. Thousands of buildings destroyed and many are still collapsing. Wires failed at 8:15. San Francisco, Calif., April 18, 9 a m- Eleven hundred people believed to have been killed on South America Street. Damage in the tenement districts where the buildings are small and built of wood, the loss of live is small. Sand Francisco, Calif., April 18, 11:10 am- The business section of the city, from Market street to Mission Street, and from the bay back, has been almost completely wrecked. Many buildings along Market and Mission Streets, including department stores have collapsed. Hundreds of people in cheaper tenement districts reported killed. Fires are raging, and owing to scarcity of water are practically beyond control. Business is practically suspended. The office of the Postal Telegraph Company in the Hobart Building is wrecked as well as the Associated Press Building at 302 Montgomery Street. Residence portion is but slightly damaged, although nearly every house has been more or less injured. San Francisco, Calif., April 18, 1 p m- The Lenley Hotel collapsed at noon without warning and fully 75 people were buried in the debris. Conditions are growing worse hourly. Buildings that showed but little damage immediately after the seismic shock are crumbling to the ground. Fire is raging in almost every block south of Market Street and west of the bay for some distance along the water front.
