Hi, I'm interested in obtaining a death certificate from Arkansas. I know the name of the deceased, the county in which the death undoubtedly occured (Randolph County), her date of birth, the names of her parents, the name of her husband, etc. I have two questions. 1. The deceased was a sister of my great-grandfather. Will Arkansas search for a death record for me when I am not a direct descendant of the deceased? 2. I know that the deceased died in 1915 or 1916. Will Arkansas search a two-year period, given the other information that I have, or will I need a more precise date of death? Thanks so much for helping out this novice. Mike Landwehr

I remember the Arkansas River that ran through our town. It flooded the whole downtown of Hutchinson, Kansas. We were about 2 blocks from the south end of mainstreet and the river where the bridge was. I was a very small girl but I have a picture of my family and some of the other neighbors standing in the water in the middle of the street. One man caught a large fish in our driveway with his hands. The water got up to the front porch of our house . My parents had furniture stacked on top of each other. They had a few chickens and they were in grates stacked on the back porch. I'm new, want to write about my Jesse R. Harris and Sarah Salyer family. Jesse was born in Va., in 1824 and married Sarah in Floyd Co,, Kentucky in 1848. They moved to St. Paul, Madison County, Arkansas where they started their family and had several children before moving on to Arkansas. I have looked for several years and found no proof of the father of Jesse. Don't know why I never thought of joining this Arkansas message board. If anyone can help, I would surely appreciate it. I have a name Raines somewhere, I think her name was Nancy. Dear Dortha, PlanetSearch.com has twelve of the major search engines listed and linked on their site. As for Arkansas Genealogy Search Engines, I use the Arkansas section of USAroots.com. It has many other links there that are quite useful. Here are the links to them, hope this helps! <A HREF="http://www.planetsearch.com/">Planetsearch Your Web. Hi, I checked around and couldn't find any listing for Pattens Gap,either. I found quite a few McShans through the rootsweb search, but none with your first names. Same with the Pettijohn name in connection with Newton. I then looked for maps in Ark concerning RR routes, etc, but no go. I finally thought to check out the Longaker name. I didn't find anything under that spelling, but if you put Longacre in the Ar search engine you will come up with about 6 sites to check out. None of them had a Betsy, but you never know. Also, if you go to Genforum(shhhhhh, don't say it too loud) and put Longacre into their search, you will be taken to the Longacre forum site. Maybe you can find your McShan people and Pattens Gap by going around in another direction. Just a thought. The McSHAN family moved to Arkansas from Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas around 1882. The father, Francis Littleton "Litrell" McSHAN, was a school teacher. Daughter, Nancy Lucretia McSHAN, married "Prince Charlie" JAMES (a Chickasaw?) and had a son, Jesse JAMES, c. 1897. Charlie JAMES left her to go to Kansas. She then married Newton PETTIJOHN in Arkansas (c. 1899) and they moved to Oklahoma. I have no idea where in Arkansas to look for the McSHAN or PETTIJOHN families! One hint: The McSHAN family apparently lived next door to "Aunt Betsy Longaker" of Pattens Gap (a 1965 newspaper article descibes Aunt Betsy as "legendary character of that era" and recounts a story about the railroad being laid down through her property). Any clues about the MCSHAN or PETTIJOHN families, or the location of Patten's Gap would be much appreciated. I haven't found Patten's Gap in any maps! Thank you! Valerie
Ron, yes, there is a listing on the Family History site/pages that gives the records for Arkansas. I spent an hour at least reviewing all the available records for Crittenden. These records to be found in the Family History Centers. I, too, benefit tremendously from reading the daily postings to the lists. Very helpful information is passed back and forth especially to folks who live far from Arkansas. Ron, You are exactly right, you can locate what records are available for every county/parish in the world this way. Like you, I read all the postings too and often find many bright ideas. The folks at your local Family History Library should have the forms you'll need to order any microfilms of interest that you find in the lists. Good luck! Sincerely, [email protected]
