    1. [ARKANSAS] National Cemetery Question
    2. km5tq
    3. I wonder if someone would know if there is am national cemetery close to Poinsett County,AR.? I have tried cemetery search after cemetery search, but, I still have not located my gg grandfather. Since he served in the Civil War,he might be buried in a national cemetery. I have been searching for his burial site for what seems like a lifetime...<grin> His last pension check was returned from the Post Office in Harrisburg,Poinsett,AR. I have him in the 1880,1900 in Lawrence County, but, he also lived in Poinsett County. I have searched all surrounding sites, but, with no results. He died in 1914. I found him in the 1910 Poinsett Directory for Residents living in Poinsett during that year. While I'm at it, thought I would mention the fact that you need to keep in mind that transcribers of the old records can really make biiiiiiiig mistakes with transcribing. My gg grandfathers name was MILES. It is listed on the directory as "MALIA"....Now,that is quite a difference in spelling. I would never found him if I hadn't noticed the names of his children, and, his age and state he came from. Thanks for any help, Glenna km5tq@gbronline.com myfamilypride@yahoo.com

    3. Van Buren Argus Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas April 1, 1903 OLD RECORDS Through the Kindness of Miss Alice Cordingly an Interesting Record is Returned. Through the kindness of Miss Alice Cordingly, the very earliest records of Fairview Cemetery have been furnished Mayor Woolum in order that he might make some important and necessary copies of it, as the records of burials there have been improperly kept, or many of them lost, a fact that is causing the cemetery committee a great deal of trouble in strengthening out the present records. The old records cover a period from 1848 to 1862 and are supposed to be perfectly reliable. They are written in an ordinary blank book that are now used for "day books" or "blotters" by bookkeepers, and is remarkably well preserved. The record is the property of a Mrs. Clary, of Leesburg, Missouri, a descendant of the Phelps family, who were amongst the earliest and most highly respected citizens of Van Buren when it was but little more than a steamboat landing. The first entry in the book records the burial of ""Jacob Hiner, drowned April 1, 1848", while the last entry reads, "Wm N Elliot, Nolan’s Brigade, Whitfield’s Battalion, McCullough Division, died March 13, 1862. 3. Hi DD, The Woodmen of the World (WOW) has checked to see if they had a record of an ancestor of mine ever having been a member. My Arkansas ancestor was Champ LANGFORD, my GG-grandfather on my mother's side. He's buried in the McDaniel Cemetery in Jonesboro, Craighead County. But I don't know when he died. The date is't on his Confederate headstone. My ALLENs came from England. They were in VA from the 1600s to 1801. From 1801 to about the 1890s, they were in Dekalb Co., TN. Since the 1890s, they've been in TX. Bill Allen <misterbill@pdq.net> Dee Drummond wrote: > Now I know. When the train got to Coal Creek the conductor informed Scargall that there were two men riding in a box car of that train that were wanted in El Reno, County, Oklahoma, for the murder of the Sheriff of that county about [unable to read]. Scargall selected Sam Sorrells who was also on the train going to Fort Smith, as his posse, and they proceeded to where the men were to arrest them and hold them for the authorities at El Reno. When they went to make the arrest, the men resisted and opened fire on the marshals and a rapid fire shooting affray took place. Sam Sorrels, Scargall’s posse, was killed by one of the bandits, and Ralph Scargall was shot through the legs by them. One of the bandits, identified as Bob Burke, was killed and the other, though wounded, made his escape. His identity is not known. There were twenty or thirty shots fired, all at close range, and the wonder is that all engaged were not killed.
