March 9, 1904 ELECTRIC LIGHTED TRAINS In discussing the Iron Mountain improvements this morning with General Superintendent Tyler, he stated that on last Thursday the company signed a contract with a St. Louis firm to equip every passenger coach on the system with electric lights, and as fast as the cars could be run into that city they would be equipped and sent back to their respective lines. The passenger coaches will have from 60 to 70 incandescent lights, for beside the three cluster lamps each seat will be supplied with a small light. The Pullman cars to be used on the Missouri Pacific will be similarly lighted, each berth to be supplied with two lights, besides an adjustable electric fan, thus assuring the traveling public every possible convenience. Each car will contain a storage battery sufficient to supply all of the lights and fans for 12 hours. When asked concerning the installation of the fast passenger train from Kansas City to Little Rock, Mr. Tyler stated that would be settled when they met to arrange their World’s Fair train service, which would be in a short time. Van Buren Argus, Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas February 3, 1904 Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, January 27.- John West, Captain of the Indian Police, with a squad of ten picked men, passed through here tonight on his way to the Greenleaf Mountains, where the Keetoowahs are concentrating. People arriving here from Braggs report a big bunch of Indians gathering there. A part of seven hunters from here is in the Greenleaf mountains. The last time the men were heard from they were in the section surrounded by the Indians. During the last three days it has been impossible to hear from them. So far no murders have been reported, but the Indians say they are gathering to "clean out" the half-breeds, who, they say, have been aiding the government in the allotment of lands. If Captain West does not locate the party of hunters before morning a posse of men will be sent out to reinforce him. This might be a longshot or something you already have but... I found Vester (born Alabama) and family in 1910 Mississippi with wife Lelia(?) and dau Ethel age 2. Wife is shown as mother of 2 with one living. Cant seem to find them elsewhere. Is this the family? RC

I am a great-niece of the late Mrs. James Allan Smith, who was born Travis Whitaker. She died about 20 years ago in Arkansas. I don't know where. (I don't believe I actually met her, except when I was three years old.) She was an older sister of my paternal grandfather, L.R. Whitaker. Travis was born in South Carolina in 1897. (I am one of Buddy's daughters.) I would like very much to get in touch with her descendants and exchange family information, especially copies of family photographs.
