There were some deeds in the time period of a deed book that I was working with. I suspect they were his first venture into Johnson County. 1) Wm. Allam paid property taxes for the year 1890 in school district 39 (Lamar), with 1 poll tax. 2)Book R page 469 A. J. Sullivan to "William Allam of the State of Alabama County of Shelby", $2000, parts of S14, T9N R23W, 120 acres, Nov. 18 1881. 3)Book R page 470 S. M. Holland to "William Allam of the State of Alabama County of Shelby", $200, parts of S14, T9N R23W, 40 acres, Nov. 18 1881. 4)Book R page 474 (missed part of this in my notes) parts of S14, T9N R23W, 80 acres, Dec. 16 1881. 5)Book R page 501 (This was the most interesting) J.R., G.T., & W.A. Cazort & wives to "William Allam of Shelby Iron Works, Alabama", $200, part of S13 T9N R23W, 40 acres, Jan. 07 1882. There was also a mortgage deed for 120 acres in Sections 13 & 14, Book V page 260, Sept. 13, 1883. Payments from J. V. Watkins to Allam were due up through 1888. So we can be reasonably safe to presume that he arrived in Johnson County in late 1881, and was using his association with the iron works as credentials. The Cazorts are historically important families in the area. Again, there are no known copies of the newspapers of the period, although several existed. By chance I also found that the History Commission had indexed a printed obituary that was titled "William Allan" as Allam. It is apparent that this is William Allam when you compare to other data. Arkansas Gazette, Sunday April 12, 1903 p 1 c 6 p 2 c 1 Lamar, April 11 (Special to the Gazette) William Allan, one of the old settlers here, died yesterday morning. He was buried here today by the Masonic fraternity. That he was held in high esteem was evidenced by the large crowd that followed the remains to the grave. He leaves a wife and several children. From Marriage License microfilm: Book T page 157 F. P. Blair of Mountainburg, Crawford County, Arkansas, age 30, to Lena Allum, age 24, of Lamar. Marriage Jan. 08 1905, John A. Conley, MG, C.P. Church (Cumberland Presbyterian) Ministers Credentials filed in Perry County, Arkansas. Book Q page 272 Lonnie Lowther, age 24, to Bertie Allam, age 18, both of Cabin Creek (today's Lamar) marriage April 28 1887 Book Q page 570 Carrie Allum, age 18, to Charlie Perry, age 22, both of Lamar, marriage April 18 1890, by W.J. Stone, MG (church not specified) The pension letter to Miss Lena Sawyer made me notice that there were two Sawyer families, both from Alabama, showing near the Allams on the 1900 census. I don't have a connection to offer, though. I just can't find the daughter married to T. H. Reiger. I have no idea where they are, but since one daughter married into a Crawford Co. family, they might be anywhere, perhaps even still back in Alabama. There is no obituary that I can find in the Clarksville paper for the weeks around Mary Ann Allam's declared death date. That's about all I can offer.
