Jones, born northwest Georgia (possibly Whitfield County, or Murray County) 1862, son of Thomas J. JONES and Matilda MCCLURE JONES, died May, 1947, Coal Hill, Arkansas, buried in Coal Hill Cemetery. There is a copy of his obituary in the lateral file at the Clarksville, Arkansas Library. I copied it last year. It lists his surviving children and his only surviving sibling, Ella DEATHERAGE. Willliam and his wife, Margaret Anna MANNING JONES, had at least seven children (eight if Chesley was a son also). I know almost nothing about his descendants, since I have not located a living descendant to date. I have not ordered William Jones' death certificate to date, but plan to do so. I haven't determined if he had a Social Security number yet. Thomas and Matilda JONES moved from Whitfield County, Georgia, about 1878 and settled in Knoxville. They appeared on the Whitfield County, GA 1870 Census and then on the 1880 Johnson County, AR Census. Thomas was a Civil War Veteran. There is a copy of his Pension Application available from the Arkansas Historic Commission. I received a copy a year or so ago. It also includes Matilda's affidavit for her Widow's pension. There is more information about Matilda in the Johnson County Courthouse (third floor, pigeon-hole #35) which I have not been able to acquire yet because of some "remodeling" or "reconstruction" going on in the building. That was last year when I went there. Maybe circumstances have changed since then. Both Thomas and Matilda are buried in Knoxville Cemetery, along with their oldest son, Andrew J. "Jack" Jones, and two daughters-in-law and some grandchildren who died in infancy or early childhood. William was one of ten children, and several of his siblings married and remained in Johnson County. Some of the other family surnames are: ATWELL, CHOATE, KETCHERSIDE, DEATHERAGE, COOK, FINNELL, TURNER, SEYMORE, DUTY, CUNNINGHAM, MANNING. My great-great grandfather, Rich JONES, was a wanderer and eventually settled in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. My late grandmother and aunt sometimes told stories about older JONES relatives, and one story included a "blind fiddle player" and a Chesley, but the details were sketchy and I have no documentation to prove that Chesley was the child of William Jones. However, I have not tried to order a death certificate for him to date. He died in 1945 and is also buried in Coal Hill Cemetery. I will gladly share all the other details with any other interested JONES researcher. Please contact me either directly or through the message boards. It would be a thrill to find another JONES out there. Best regards, Raye Jones Blackman
