Surnames: Sawyer, Allam, Reiger, Perry, Blair Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hV.2ADE/2321.2 Message Board Post: Some additional information. I was at the Dallas library today, where they have the Arkansas pension files on microfilm. There was much less information than normal, I'm afraid. In fact it was one of the least documented I've seen, but as a Widow's pension, and with a confirmation of service, there weren't the usual letters from people who served with him or knew him after the war. But some information is recoverable: May Ann Allam was born on Nov. 14th, 1844. William Allam's name was at one place badly written in pencil, with a middle initial. It may be F., J., or T. The pension was allowed on August 13th, 1919. May Ann applied as a Widow. There were no previous applications. E.T. McConnell was one of the signers for the Pension Board. She stated on May 5th, 1919, that William was in Co. B. of Capt. Holloway's Regiment Cavalry, CSA, Alabama, and that he died on April 10th, 1903. Miss Lena Sawyer, for whom William is referred to as "her Uncle", wrote to her U.S. Representative after the State of Alabama archives refused her request for information, since she did not state a unit affiliation. But the Adjutant General of Alabama did respond to the Representative, saying that William Allum and John Allam were presumed the same person, and that he enlisted 10 Nov. 1861 as Sgt. in Capt. Smith's Co. in Dallas Co. Alabama (Selma), and that he was mustered in 19 Nov. 1861 at Mobile. That same company later became Holloway's. He was paroled at Greensboro North Carolina in 1865 under the terms of the military convention of 26 April 1865. /s/ P. C. Harris, Adjutant General B. F. Allam, as administrator of the estate, reported to the County Clerk that Mary Ann Allam died 15 December 1928. From this the estate collected the last partial pension payment due. The letters written in the attempt to gather information for the service record (1918-1919) were all addressed to Miss Lena Sawyer, Lamar, Arkansas. There are a couple of other books that I normally refer to for details, but there was only one mention in Lillian Mickel's "Probate Records". p. 119 1928 Dec 15 Mary Ann Allam, dec'd Heirs B. F. Allam, Mrs. T. H. Reiger, Carry M. Perry, and Lena Blair. In McConnell's "Johnson Co. Marriages 1890-1908", I find Lena Allam m. F. P. Blair, 01/08/1905, Marriage book T page 157. The library does not have any later marriage books, although at least one exists (somebody needs to donate a copy?) There is no listing for Allam or Allum in the land patent books, so they did not have a grant or purchase public land in his name. I also noted that John G. Blair, Co. L, Hall McConnell's Company, served from Johnson Co., and was born June 8, 1844 in TN. He might be related to F. P. Blair? While I was at it, I checked some Alabama marriage books (again, sparse), but the general book did not show them. There were a number of Allums in Bullock County, but no even near matches. I also checked the Dallas & Shelby County books - nothing shown. If you have an LDS Family History Center nearby you might request the Deed records for that period - some property transfer may have been made. Based on the Mickel book, I would presume William had no will and no probate, but that May Ann did, since the pension was involved. There may be Probate records in Johnson County, but this would be a simple estate. There are only a few pages in the pension application. You could order copies from the Arkansas History Commission, but there is no further information. There are very few copies of newspapers existing from that period, so I would not count on that for additional information, but again, the Arkansas History Commission is the reference.
