They married in St. Clair County Alabama and she is from Springville Alabama. Her name is Rebecca Self. Thanks so much for the information, I believe he filed for a pension in Arkansas even though he served with a Alabama regiment. I would like to contact some living relatives so I can complete this part of the cates family tree.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Cates Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hV.2ADE/1697.2 Message Board Post: Interesting conflict in the 1870 Census index that bears further research in the actual microfilm. John, Rebecca, Mary M., and Amanda are in household 171, Spadra Township. However, Mary is shown as b. AL, rather than Arkansas as stated in 1880. If 1870 is correct, you are looking for a family startup in Alabama. If 1870 is wrong, then the family startup was Arkansas. The pension application becomes more interesting, as it will often tell marriage date an place. 1900 Census might also help, although Mary is likely married and gone from home by then.

If you don't have access to the Ark. I can e-mail you direct and tell you what I know. I had the pleasure of meeting your grandmother Aunt Arizona when Uncle Jake died. She was a very beautiful person. My mom, Olene, was very glad to be able to sit a talk with her for a while. Mom hadn't seen her for some time. Uncle Doc and his wife Aunt Floy was there and I think one of there sons named James. The church where they had the services for Uncle Jake had prepared food for the family and they put Aunt Arizona at the head of the table as the Head of the Family. Pam

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hV.2ADE/1696.1.1 Message Board Post: Debra, are you related to the Rhodes. I know that Mary Elizabeth Hardcastle King married next a Rhodes. I know that they had several children. Uncle Jake (Alvin Leslie) was one of my favorites. We visited with him in Sikeston, MO. quite often. His sister Aunt Lizzie and Uncle Jester lived in Sikeston and also Uncle Ellic (don't know if I am spelling his name right) his wife was Aunt Jewel. I know of another half sister Aunt Arizona. I think there were a couple of more. My mother was James Harrison's daughter. Her name was Mary Olene and everyone called her Olene. I have grandpa James's SS# and it shows he was born in Clarksville, Ark. in June 17, 1982. If you could help me with information on the Kings or the Rhodes I would greatly appreciate. I also know that Benjamin King's mother was suppose to be Indian. My grandpa and Uncle Dock and Uncle Ellic showed the Indian side very much. Thank you Pam

I checked the Lamar cemetery: (new addition) Cook, Lowell S. 8/25/1912 12/29/1965 Cook, Nettie J. 1/22/1912 2/26/1963 (original section) Cook, Annabelle 08/25/1907 03/02/1929 Cook, Clara Etta Pearson 03/10/1885 04/27/1962 Cook, Walter C. 01/20/1882 12/19/1966 I don't find the name Groene in any cemeteries in the Johnson County Cemetery Book (1986), which is extensive, but not complete. The period up to 1912 is poorly covered by local newspapers, as few have been found. Do you have the names of later family members in Johnson Co. for whom there might be records? This might be a search route.
