Since I last posted, I've learned that Newburn McClain was married to Elizabeth Slayden -- she being a sister of my ancestor Daniel Patrick Slayden. Many of the Slaydens lived in western Kentucky in the counties north of Weakley Tennessee. Those Slaydens all trace back to an Arthur and Rachel Slayden in Virginia. If I remember correctly, Coleman Slayden has the same origins. Andrew Wells Slayden I now suspect to be a son of my Daniel Patrick. That 1880 brother-in-law marking would be a reference to Andrew being a nephew of Newburn's wife. D.P. died in the 1870s and his known children and possibly his widow moved to Arkansas. A.W.'s wife was Lou Long, daughter of Franklin Long, a neighbor of Newburn McClain in Arkansas. Slayton family researchers trace Elsie Slaton Cooper to a George Slaton in Virginia. Many of his descendants migrated to Georgia, some later continuing west. There are known groups of descendants of both of these Slayden/Slayton lines in northeast Arkansas, sometimes living very close together. The tipoff in distinguishing them is often a birth in Georgia/Alabama versus Kentucky/Tennessee. Scott Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
