He died in 1903 leaving his wife Julia (Henson?) and several children, including Mead, Walter, Hattie, Fannie, and William (Phise). Walter lived in the Tuckerman area, William near Possum Hollow, they are buried in Auvergne Cemetery. Walter had two sons, Tillman and Perry Ervin Mathis. Walter married Mollie Bowen.
