According to family tradition, they were living in Newport, Arkansas by 2/23/1895. A couple of years later, the Semi Weekly times ran a story in its issue of 7/20/1898 regarding John Nice, formerly of Democrat Township. Carroll County relatives had received a letter from him in which he stated that he had joined the army at Tampa, Florida and would soon be fighting Spaniards in Cuba. The article continues; Two years ago, John Nice, accompanied by the family consisting of a wife and five children, and a man named Bowen, left this county for Arkansas. and settled on a farm near Newport. They prospered, and were well satisfied until one day Nice went to Newport and marketed his cattle, receiving quite a large sum, and returned home. That night he disappeared, and all efforts to locate him were in vain. It was finally concluded that he had been murdered for his money and his body concealed and suspicion pointed to Bowen. He was arrested as a murderer but was acquitted. A mob, however, decided that he was really guilty and that he should be hung, but for some reason their plan was not carried out. Nices' wife mourning him as dead, sold the property and came back to Carroll County. and last fall Mrs. Clara Nice married Jay Knarr from White County. They then moved to Royal Center. The former Mrs. Nice is prostrated by the news that her first husband still lives, and his other relatives are undecided whether they should be angry or rejoice over his news that he is alive. Nice belongs to one of the best families in the county, and his letter has caused quite a sensation. During the time that John was away, he served in the Spanish American War of 1898-1902. according to the inscription on his tombstone. Clara returned to Carroll County in 1896. His oldest child Cora Myrtle, would have been 7, Lee Orris 5 and John Albert 1. As stated in the newspaper account about John, Clara had indeed remarried. Bonnie, I found a marriage record for John Roberts to Nora Bunch--18 Nov 1900 in Jackson Co., Ar. listed on Familysearch.org. I also found in 1910 in Jefferson Twsp., Jackson Co., Arkansas the head of a family named John W. Bunch, listed with his siblings; Nora born Jul 1881, Wm. H. born Mar 1884 Maretta also born Mar 1884 and charly R. born Mar 1890. Maybe this is your Bunch family--hard to know for certain unless you have more information. In 1880, in Riley Dist., Yell Co., Arkansas I found a Francis A. Bunch with wife Mary J. dau. Nancy C. and son John W. age 3 who may possibly be the same John who is head of family in 1910. At least the age is close to correct. Hope this helps a little. No relation to either family--just like trying to help when I can. Hi Carol, Thank you so very much for the information. I had checked the marriage licenses for Jackson Co. off their website and couldn't find one for John and Nora. I will have to go back and check again to see if maybe it is misspelled on there as a lot of the names were misspelled in translation on the Jackson County website. A cousin in AR is supposed to talk to our great-uncle, one of John and Nora's children, to see what more info she can get from him. He is in very poor health so visits have to be limited. He is our only link to our ancestors on the Roberts side. Otherwise, I have no further info at the time on John and Nora. Thanks again for all of your help. I have been searching for your Gibsons today! I am way past due in helping you search for them. I started with your posting on Rootsweb and found the census from there. I noticed on the original census, J.H. Gibson is a son, and you have J.H. listed as a female on the Rootsweb posting. The following marriage took place in Jackson Co., AR on 12-26-1880. CARTER, R. P. 22 ARKANSAS, GIBSON, MARGARET 17 ARKANSAS, 12/26/1880 B/210 If you go back and look at the 1880 census for Bird Township, where you found your Gibsons listed, you will notice that R.P. Carter is living just a four houses down from B.A, Rebecca, and family. R.P. is living in the household of his brother, Wm. M. Carter, with another brother, H.L. Carter. I do believe the M.E. Gibson, female, listed as the daughter for B.A. and Rebecca is Margaret Gibson. The age matches up and all and with R.P. being a neighbor, as you know, it was very common in those days for the daughters of one family to marry the "neighbor boy". I think the Florence Gibson listed below is definitely your Florence Gibson, age 18, who married Wm. A Donaphan below. If you notice th marriage date, it is again 12-26-1880. A lot of siblings got married on the same day because that's when the justice of the peace was available or when the preacher came through town. DONAPHAN, WM A 20 ARKANSAS, GIBSON, FLORENCE 18 ARKANSAS, 12/26/1880 B/209 By the way, twenty years later, (1900-1930) my Graves family was living in Bird Township! Definitely got to figure out if there is any connection between our ancestors there! :) Am still looking but wanted to get this sent to you. Talk to you later, Bonnie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
