    2. Karen, Try the www.couchgenweb.com/craighead/ This is Jonesboro, Arkansas and they already have an index on line from 1885 forward. My line runs through Elizabeth and have some info on her brothers, but very little on their subsequent offspring's. When you research the Slayden's, if my info is correct, when you get back to the 1700 era, you will find that the spelling of the last name was SLADDING. There was a lot of inter-marriage in the Slayden family, many cousins and second-cousin intermarriage. Mostly second-cousin. Mary was born in TN abt 1866. Their first children were born in MS, then one in TN, at least 2 in MO, and they had arrived in Stone Co AR by 1900. Is there an index? I would guess that ere with the Paynes'.the other child was born between 1874 and 1896. My mom said that her mom never really talked much about her parents, and that Alice had married "Mr Hill" in Arkansas, which I never could find a record. I would guess she married him in Red River Co, after moving there with the Paynes'. I found out that my Grandfather also taught school in Clarksville in the 1930's. My Aunt has a copy of the newspaper clip about Mr Hill dying, so I'll try to get her to find it. Thanks again Chuck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: piperry Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.jackson/186.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Chuck, I haven't been researching the PAYNE line for quite some time. While I only have a Joseph Charles PAYNE (b. 1867 AR, d. 6 Dec 1929 OK md to Martha Ellen DOWNS) in my line so far, I won't rule out a connection. From what I know, the PAYNE line was in Hancock, Winston and Walker Counties in AL before heading to Poinsett and then Jackson Counties in AR. Later, they migrated to Red River County in Texas, as you mentioned. I don't have any record of any SCOTT connections to the PAYNE line I've been researching. I did look at your census references and noticed that there's a Luther SCOTT (b. Jan 1878) on the same page a few houses up, who said he was born in AL to parents both born in AL. He later shows up in Idabel, McCurtain Co., OK with a wife, Sue, and three kids. He did fill out a WWI application that gave the birth date as 21 Jan 1878, but there's no mention of a birthplace or any relatives besides his wife, Sue. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any other connections. B! y the way, I couldn't decypher the mother's first name either, but could it be Sapha? Also, your Alice mentioned having had three children, only two living in 1900. Could the death records for the missing child help you? Best wishes! --Laura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She married Joseph J Payne in Jackson< Ark 12/24/1893. They had two daughters: Nellie and Lora. According to the 1900-1930 census, Nellie and Lora list their father as being born in Alabama. So, there could be a connection somewhere as I noticed your Paynes' were also from Alabama. Plus it seems as most Paynes' that were in Red River Co, Tx in 1900 were either born in Arkansas or Alabama. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, Alice J remarried a Hill. In 1910, Alice(Hill) and daughters(Payne) were in Whitesboro, Grayson Co., Tx, along with Alices' mother Glapha(?)... it's hard to read. In 1920, Alice was head of the family with Houston Watson, Lora and two sons. I believe she died in April, 1920. Chuck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
