This is embarrassing to admit, but I appear to have lost about four or five months worth of email messages from my Hold folder last night. I still haven't figured out the details of what happened. It appears the folder contents were deleted as I exited my email program. I received no indication of any problem at the time This would all be merely inconvenient and annoying except for the fact that that I then updated my backup copies of my message archive before becoming aware of the loss.. Mind you, I'm a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy when it comes to maintaining my email archives. I have messages that date back twenty years in that database and I've gone to some lengths to retain them. I keep synchronized working copies of the archive on both my desktop and my laptop machines and I regularly update two complete sets of copies on different hard drives on my desktop machine. In addition, at longer intervals, I write a copy to CD-ROM. In the present instance, I seem to have lost the contents - about 4000 to 5000 messages from my Hold folder. That's the folder where I have been collecting genealogically oriented messages both sent and received from the archive with a view to wading through them one message at a time and acting upon them as needed - updating my genealogical database, corresponding with the sender, updating my address book, what-have-you. We won't discuss the number of man-hours I've expended in the last month wading through my entire database of approximately a hundred thousand messages to identify those messages and move them to the Hold folder for more considered review and action. I can go to my CD-ROM to recover all the more dated messages. The problem is that the CD-ROM was last written in June. That means that all the genealogically oriented messages (naturally the ones I least wanted lose!) since June have gone to that great bit-bucket in the sky where all good little bits and bytes go when they die. Just coincidentally, it also appears that I have suddenly acquired some problems with the hard drive on my laptop - the machine where I was working when the folder contents 'went away.' I've been running Norton Disk Doctor on it, but there appears to be some kind of problem with the directory structure and possibly the fat table on the C: partition. That's computer-speak for "I may have to re-format that entire drive and start over - meaning re-install Windows, re-install all my software, copy several gigabytes of data files from across the network, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera." In the interim, whilst I'm diagnosing, repairing and what-not, I call upon the goodness of your hearts to retransmit any messages you sent to me or that I sent to you between 1 Jun 2000 and 15 Oct 2000. I realize that most of you are not compulsive email collectors like I am, but please check your folders for me. Your Sent folder will probably retain any messages you sent to me and the Deleted folder may contain any messages from me - assuming you are not one of those folks that habitually deletes the contents of those folders before exiting your email program. -- Robert W. Hi gang, Now that I've got your attention, and on the miniscule chance that something can be done about it, let me tell you what I learned at the Jackson County library yesterday... The short story is that all of the Newport Daily Independent newspaper archives from July 1, 1998 to about Dec. 31, 1999 were destroyed before they could be microfilmed. The long story is that periodically, the newspaper, as all state newspapers do, submit their old papers to the Arkansas History Commission for microfilming. In the last couple of years, there was a large staff turnover at the Daily Independent office and no one followed up on this procedure. In addition, there was a staff shortage at the AHC and no one from the History Commission followed up with the newspaper office in Newport. Apparently, a new staffer got overzealous in cleaning up and threw away the above newspapers. The Jackson County library had not kept their old newspapers, either, because of storage restrictions and because they had always ordered the microfilm without any problems. The Daily Independent was the only newspaper serving Jackson County at the time, so unless someone can be found who hoarded these newspapers... Mark Williamson ARJACKSO listkeeper [email protected]

Hi gang, The Newport Daily Independent is going to produce a new pictorial history book of Newport and Jackson County which commemorates the 20th century in Jackson County. Appropriately enough, the book will be titled "A Century of Celebration - Newport Daily Independent 1901-2001." They are taking orders for this book right now, as well as soliciting pictures from current and past residents of Jackson County. They are making the regular edition available for $19.95 + tax + postage to the first 500 customers ($29.95 afterwards.) The ad I'm looking at is from the September 7 paper, so I don't know what "today's" price would be. Also, a special limited leather-bound edition has been made available for $75 + tax + postage. They will also reserve a copy in your name for a $10 deposit (regular edition.) I suspect that the best thing to do, if interested, would be to call the Daily Independent at 870-523-5855. Their address is Newport Daily Independent, 2408 Highway 367 North, Newport, AR 72112. They produced a similar book, "Reflections - A Pictorial History of Jackson County," in 1996, and I thought it was rather well done - unfortunately you won't find a copy for sale anywhere. [BTW, I don't work for the Newport Daily Independent, of course - nor do any of my relatives - that I know about!] Mark Williamson, Memphis, TN ARJACKSO listkeeper [email protected]
