About 1845 four EZELL brothers (Harrison J. Thomas Jefferson, Elbert J. & Simon) , at least one sister(Ludica m. to James KINGERY & possibly Rebecca m. to Warren W. RIPPATOE) and two WILLIAMS brothers (Hardy & Stephen?) & at least one sister moved from White Co., IL to AR--Lawerence & St. Francis Counties. One brother, Thomas Jefferson & Mary Ann (WILLIAMS) EZELL were in Jackson Co., AR in 1860. Thomas disappeared between 1867 & 1870--I assume that he died. Most of the EZELLs moved to Stoddard Co., MO around 1870. Do any of these people sound familiar? Mary Lou Cooley [email protected]

Hi Lisa, I've identified about 25 cemeteries in Jackson County that were never inventoried. In addition, all of the inventories listed (except for one) were done between 1964-1976. Plus, inventories were and are subject to human errors. So, in no way are the inventories complete. The area around Jacksonport always has been vulnerable to river floods, though, and I believe a number of early gravesites in that area were destroyed by flooding. I see records show that James B. Maguire and Rhoda C. Province were married 17 Jan 1874 in Jacksonport. Do you find them in the 1880 or 1900 census of Jackson County? Posted on: Jackson Co. Ar Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Jackson/10299 Surname: PAYNE, DAVIS, MARTIN, CONINE, OWEN ------------------------- I have just received information on the 1896 Application for Enrollment in the Cherokee Nation by Chesley PAYNE, who was a resident at that time of Red River County, TX north of T&P RR. Chesley and many of his siblings had relocated to TX from Poinsett and Jackson Co., AR (believe they lived in Newport, Jackson Co., AR just before the move to TX). Some of the family moved to Lamar Co., Tarrant Co., and Dallas Co., TX. Others moved to Hugo, Choctaw Co., OK. Chesley PAYNE (b. May 1844 AL, d. Sept 1914 TX)married in Aug 1867 in Poinsett Co., AR to Martha C. DAVIS (b. April 1853 MS, d. April 1923 TX). Chesley was the son of Preston PAYNE who was the son of Matthew PAYNE (sometimes spelled Mathew PAYNE). Matthew, said to be of the Cherokee tribe, had refused to be enrolled, apparently, shunning any lists or rolls. When his grandson, Chesley attempted to later be enrolled, his application was denied because Matthew had never appeared on the lists. Some of the names appearing on this set of 1896 rejected application paperwork are as follows: Children of Preston PAYNE (son of Matthew PAYNE): Chesley PAYNE (age 53), son Martha C. (Davis) PAYNE (age 41), daughter-in-law Elisha Preston PAYNE (age 19), grandson Virgil M. PAYNE (age 16), grandson Maria A. PAYNE (age 14), granddaughter John Howard PAYNE (age 12), grandson Lewin C. PAYNE (age 10), grandson Everett E. PAYNE (age 8), grandson Robert PAYNE (age 33), (Chesley's son) Alma PAYNE (age 2), great-granddaughter Mary (PAYNE)CONINE (age 26), (Chesley's daughter) Cecil CONINE, great-granddaughter David W. CONINE, great-grandson Ruthey (PAYNE) MARTIN (age 46), daughter Henry C. MARTIN (age 20), grandson George MARTIN (age 11), grandson Weaver MARTIN (age 7), grandson Elisha PAYNE (age 38), son (married to Sarah A. OWEN) George C. PAYNE (age 16), grandson Margie (written as Mary) E. PAYNE (age 11), granddaughter These are the names that appear on the application, but there are many more children and grandchildren not listed. Matthew PAYNE was supposedly a veteran of both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 (particularly the Creek War of 1814). Three of Preston's sons, Matthew (not listed in the application), John (also not listed in the application), and Chesley all fought in the Civil War for regiments from AR. The family relocated to TX and OK in the late 1870's. I would be very interested in any information on these PAYNEs from the TN, AL, AR, TX, & OK areas. Thank you for reading this message and best wishes for success in your own research! ---Laura

Alice, join the club - geneaology is tough even if you know how and you know most of your relatives. Our families get separated quickly and go to all parts of the World. The only name that you mentioned that I am at all familiar with is "Woods", but I don't know a Velma Woods. There were some Woods who lived in the country around Tuckerman - Centerville community, etc. I'll check around and let you know if I see anything. I find myself looking in cemeteries a whole lot these days - not what I thought I would be doing!
