I'm seeking information on the parents and grandparents of Eva Winton Balch. BALCH, Eva Winton (27 Sep 1894 - 4 Feb 1937) wife of Walker A. Balch-Johnston Cemetery, Jackson Co., Arkansas -- Peggy <'}}}}>< Winton Family Homepage http://sites.netscape.net/mawpeggywilson/homepage
According to the 1880 census, a John Campbell and his wife, Babe, were living in Bird Township, Jackson County, Arkansas. They had two children, Belle, born in 1875, and Emma born in 1887. John's brother William (age 18) was also living with them. Does anyone know anything about this family? I believe it may be my gg-grandfather and gg-grandmother. By 1881, a son, John W. Campbell was born (my g-grandfather)but I don't have any record of who his mother was and I think it may have been this Babe. By the next census available, (1900) John Campbell has remarried to a woman named Mary and I don't know what happened to Babe or if the daughters had married. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't know Babe's last name but the census said she was born in Kentucky. According the LDS FamilySearch site, she and John Campbell were married in 1874 in Arkansas. Any help would be appreciated! Hi folks! I've added yet another article to my web site for your information and amusement. This one is: "A Brief History of the Disposition and Administration of the Public Domain in Arkansas to 1908." It briefly highlights for readers the public land laws reflected by the land patent information, and outlines how those laws operated in Arkansas. To get to it, go to the URL in my signature block below, click to go to the Genealogy page and then scroll to the bottom of that page. Then click on the title displayed there to bring up the article which is in PDF format. It will take a bit to download the article, so be patient. -- Robert W. Hi Folks! I recently ran across an very interesting article in the Jackson Historical Society's quarterly that dealt with Capt. Thomas Benton Stallings, a steamboat captain on the White River during the post-war period. However, the article is replete with names of places and people concerned with the trade along the White River. I imagine that many of you will find mentions of your relations in it. I have posted it in PDF form on my web site. The URL is listed below. -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! Does anyone have further information on the Robinson family found in the paragraph below? I am particularly interested in James Robinson?Robertson/Roberson. Thanks for any info. you may offer. The Grays and Stokes were the first settlers in the southern part of the county, a Frenchman, Shavenaugh by name, Dunbar and the Hollenheads, were among the first in the northern part, and Thomas T. Tunstall and Samuel Reid were early residents at Jacksonport. About the year 1833 or 1834, the Robinsons bought a steam-boat, the "Mount Pleasant," with which they carried on a trade for several years following, between their landing at Newport and New Orleans. >>>>>
Hi gang, Well, as the old sayin' goes, don't believe everything you're told... I still haven't got the "true" story, but the Newport Daily Independent editions from July 1999 to December 2000 apparently were filmed by the Arkansas History Commission after all. The microfilm of the newspaper is now available at the Jackson County library (the last roll ends November 2000.) I stand corrected! Mark Williamson ARJACKSO listkeeper [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Williamson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 14, 2000 1:35 PM Subject: [ARJACKSO] little bit of "horror" news | Hi gang, | | Now that I've got your attention, and on the miniscule chance that something | can be done about it, let me tell you what I learned at the Jackson County | library yesterday... | | The short story is that all of the Newport Daily Independent newspaper | archives from July 1, 1998 to about Dec. 31, 1999 were destroyed before they | could be microfilmed. | | The long story is that periodically, the newspaper, as all state newspapers | do, submit their old papers to the Arkansas History Commission for | microfilming. In the last couple of years, there was a large staff turnover | at the Daily Independent office and no one followed up on this procedure. | In addition, there was a staff shortage at the AHC and no one from the | History Commission followed up with the newspaper office in Newport. | Apparently, a new staffer got overzealous in cleaning up and threw away the | above newspapers. | | The Jackson County library had not kept their old newspapers, either, | because of storage restrictions and because they had always ordered the | microfilm without any problems. | | The Daily Independent was the only newspaper serving Jackson County at the | time, so unless someone can be found who hoarded these newspapers... | | Mark Williamson | ARJACKSO listkeeper | [email protected] |
