I think the best test is Y-DNA (male) through Family Tree. The next is Family Finder and last mt-DNA (female). Whichever side of the family you are most interested - the father on the paternal side or father on the maternal side. This way you can join a surname group. Family Finder you can do and it will give you the people in between with what percentage of ethnic you are.
